00:30Hello and welcome to Latest TV News, I'm Sam Morton, reporter for Sussex World and
00:37later in the show we will be talking about how Brighton & Hove Albion got on at QPR before
00:42we look ahead to their final pre-season friendly at home to Spanish side Villarreal. We will
00:47discuss the latest goings on in the transfer market with a big name linked with the Seagulls.
00:53First here are the top stories from across Sussex this week.
00:56A large policing operation took place in response to a potential criminal disorder in East Sussex
01:01this week with peaceful protests taking place in Brighton and Hastings on Wednesday evening.
01:06Prime Minister Keir Starmer held an urgent Cobra meeting following a week of disorder
01:10on UK streets. The riots were sparked following the killing of three young girls in Southport
01:15last week. In Brighton, approximately 2,000 people attended Queen's Road and peaceful
01:20protests took place. There was a significant police presence and there were no instances
01:24of notes and no arrests. In Hastings, approximately 400 members of the public attended Cambridge
01:30Gardens for another peaceful protest. The protest was monitored by police officers and
01:34there were no instances of notes and no arrests. Assistant Chief Constable Paul Court said
01:39we would like to thank communities for their support, engagement and providing information
01:43to help us keep communities safe. There will be a continued police presence and additional
01:47policing resources in coming days to maintain peace and prevent disorder.
01:52Meanwhile, Southern Rail has issued a travel warning ahead of the upcoming Eastbourne International
01:56Airshow. Airborne will be celebrating its 30th year in the town with crowds flocking
02:01from across the country to marvel at the event. Southern Rail confirmed that a queuing system
02:06will be put in place at Eastbourne Railway Station and the operator is expecting that
02:10trains will be very busy. The spokesperson said the Eastbourne International Airshow
02:1430th anniversary event takes place between the 15th and 18th August. Trains to and from
02:20Eastbourne are expected to be busy and there will be a queuing system at the station to
02:23allow everyone to get home safely. A key road in East Sussex is now closed and
02:28will not reopen until later this month. The A2100 London Road between Battle and Johns
02:34Cross will be closed until the Friday 30th August due to emergency roadworks. East Sussex
02:40Highway said workmen will be carrying out targeted carriageway reconstruction due to
02:44subsidence in the area. As part of these works, they will be installing new drainage in localised
02:49areas. Due to limited working space, London Road will be closed to through traffic during
02:54these works. Access to residents will be restricted. The road will be closed for 24 hours each
03:00day to allow the required queuing time for materials, however the team will be on site
03:05between 8am and 5pm each day. A hotel situated on the Eastbourne seafront
03:10has been sold after being listed for £2.3m. The Pier Hotel, a four-star hotel on Grand
03:17Parade, was sold on July 25th after its listing on Rightmove in 2023. The hotel was sold through
03:24business sales specialist GPS Business Sales. A spokesperson for the company said,
03:29We are delighted to announce the completion of the sale of the Pier Hotel. The hotel has
03:34over 30 rooms with a stand-alone bar on the lower ground floor and has been a feature
03:38of Eastbourne seafront for many years. They wish the new owner every success with the
03:42business adding that it will continue to be a popular destination for visitors in the
03:46town. Finally, Brighton & Hove Pride 2024 was a
03:51fun-filled success with around 300,000 people enjoying the event over the weekend. The colourful
03:57parade started at 11am on Saturday August 3rd with the theme of Joy Celebrating Life.
04:03Musical acts at the city's 51st Pride event included Sophie Ellis-Bexter, Girls Aloud
04:08and Mika. Local Brighton McDonald's restaurant teams took part in a post-event litter pick
04:13for Brighton Pride in a bid to keep Brighton tidy. Twelve crew members and helpers from
04:18two Brighton McDonald's restaurants, which are owned and operated by local franchisee
04:23Yaz Turin alongside local volunteers, collected an impressive six full bags of rubbish between
04:28them. The area tidied up included famous Brighton landmarks such as the Lanes, Pavilion Gardens,
04:34the Old Steen and St Peter's Church. To get into the Pride spirit and to show their
04:37support for the event, McDonald's crew members and other volunteers wore LGPTQ+, Pride flags,
04:44headbands and accessories.
04:45Hello, I'm Sam Morton, reporter for Sussex World and I've just watched Brighton beat
04:50QPR at Loftus Road in their penultimate pre-season friendly. One goal was enough on the day with
04:55Danny Wobbeck scoring from the penalty spot. It was Jancuba Minter who was fouled after
05:00he won the ball back high up the field and as he lined up the shot he was unfairly brought
05:04down and Minter was one of the bright sparks of the day once again after his two goals
05:09in Japan. He didn't quite get on the score sheet today but he looked the most likely,
05:12especially in the first half. But Sarmiento came close with a good effort that was well
05:17saved. Matoma had a shot on target as well. But Brighton couldn't quite find that final
05:23ball in the first half but there was some real nice interplay and link up between the
05:29players. There's so much attacking talent in this team now. Minter really has settled
05:34like a duck to water in the side and he's been really impressive. Long may it continue
05:39and hopefully he can replicate that in the Premier League.
05:42There was also a debut today for Mats Weifer who has been injured since his move from Feyenoord
05:47but there was real excitement about him because he would have been one of the first names
05:51on the team sheet for the Netherlands in the Euros if it wasn't for his injury. He's come
05:55in at Brighton and he came in the second half and there were some nice moments from him
05:59as well. There's so much more to come and I think we'll definitely see more from him
06:04and Cosi Edubri as well who came on as a second half substitute and there were some other
06:09nice cameos as well. It was really good to see the players giving minutes and that's
06:14the main thing in pre-season is to get the fitness up and the match sharpness and to
06:20get ready for the Premier League season which starts with a trip to Everton and they don't
06:24get much tougher than that.

06:31Stay tuned for the Goldmouth Action Podcast.
06:34Hi and welcome to another episode of the Goldmouth Action Podcast where we take a look at the
06:58latest goings on at Brighton and Hove Albion and Crawley Town. I'm Mark Dunford and I'm
07:02joined by Brighton writers Darren Howard, Henry Brighton as well as Sam Morton who
07:06covers Albion and Crawley. I'll get involved when we talk about the Reds in the second
07:10half.
07:11Brighton travelled to QPR in their penultimate pre-season friendly at the weekend and they
07:15now host the Spanish outfit Villarreal at the Amex on Saturday before the season gets
07:20underway a week later. We'll pick over the bones where Albion win at Loftus Road and
07:24give our predictions for the weekend plus we'll bring you the latest news from Crawley
07:28Town as they prepare to start for their League One campaign against Blackpool on Saturday.
07:34You can read all the stories we are talking about with the videos and pictures online

07:48you for tuning in.
07:49Danny Welbeck, he scored the only goal of the game from the penalty spot at Brighton
07:54and heads past QPR at Loftus Road on Saturday. What were the main takeaways from that game, Sam?
08:00Yeah, it was an enjoyable game really. Obviously just the one goal was the difference at Loftus
08:06Road but you felt Brighton deserved the win. Obviously victories and results are not important
08:11in pre-season but I think there was definitely some positive signs from them going forward
08:15especially in the first half they had a number of chances and I think Minta was the standout
08:22player once again after his exploits in Japan. He's a real live wire on that right wing
08:27and he really has settled so quickly into the side and he's immediately kind of shown
08:32what he's all about and he really impressed me and he was one I was really looking forward
08:35to watching and as I say he didn't disappoint at all. It was good to see Sarmiento involved
08:40and he was involved in some nice link-up play as well and he had one of the game's best
08:45chances actually in the first half. We went closest to scoring I should say. Matoma, brilliant
08:50to see him back in action as well after he missed so much at the end of last season.
08:54He's still showing signs of rust a little bit as he's working his way back into full
08:59fitness and form but I think it's so exciting now the talent that Brighton have going forward.
09:05It's remarkable really and that's all you even think about. Joao Pedro coming back in,
09:08Evan Ferguson coming back. So I think there's lots of reasons to be excited if you're a
09:13Brighton fan really but it was the second half that Brighton had to wait for second
09:18half to score on the day with Minter winning the ball back high up the field, taking the
09:22ball off a defender and he was unfairly brought down. Welbeck stepped up poorly to slot the
09:28penalty home and that was all they needed to secure the win in that game really. QPR
09:33really offered nothing in the first half and it wasn't until Brighton scored that they
09:36then started to put the defence under a little bit of pressure. I think Jason Steele had
09:40probably one thing to do all match which was to catch a fairly easy cross and that's pretty
09:45much all he had to do. So I think Brighton really were confident, composed and they really
09:51did limit QPR to very little in the game. So I think from a defensive point of view
09:55there was lots to be pleased about as well as the good things we saw going forward.
09:59So Minter, he was the one who stood out for Albion you think?
10:04Yeah, 100%. Minter really was impressive in the match and I can't wait to see how he gets
10:09on in the Premier League really because we've obviously seen what he can do in pre-season
10:13but when he gets down to the real nitty-gritty of the Premier League we can really see what
10:18he can do. I think we're going to get into it but Fabian Hersele in his post-match comment
10:25was just talking about how defensively it's so important to start from the forwards so
10:32he wants to see defensive mindsets from his attackers which is so different to what we
10:37saw from Roberto Di Servi. So it's a bit of a change in that sense and it's something
10:44the players are going to have to get used to but it seems like Minter has settled into
10:48that straight away because you really did see his mindset to be onto the defenders as
10:55soon as they take the first touch and try and win the ball back high up the field. It
10:58can really help Brighton keep the dominance and pressure on teams and we really did see
11:03some signs of that and hopefully that can be replicated in the Premier League.
11:07What else did we learn from Hersele's intriguing post-match comments?
11:13That was the main thing from the comments, just to try and get the players to understand
11:17this slightly different way of performing and trying to get slightly better results
11:22and defensive mindset because as we saw with Di Servi, he did play high-risk football and
11:26he was very gung-ho at times wasn't he as we know and if it went wrong, badly wrong.
11:31I feel like we won't see much of that from Brighton. I think we'll definitely see some
11:36brilliant attacking football that we've obviously become used to with Di Servi but
11:39I feel there will be more of a kind of an onus on the defence side of things as well
11:45and to make sure things are tight. Hersele did speak highly about the importance of getting
11:50that clean sheet and he did think that was really important and we never really heard
11:53that from Di Servi. I don't think Di Servi very often spoke about getting a clean sheet,
11:57never really thought that it was important after all in the opposition. So I think we
12:02take some getting used to from the players and the others as well. I think the signs
12:06are positive. As we saw, he's scored lots of goals in Japan as well. So it's not going
12:10to be a case of just sitting back and hitting teams on the counter. I think Hersele will
12:13be looking for the right balance between defence and attacking.
12:18Next up for Albion is a home match against La Liga side Villarreal in their final pre-season
12:22friendly before they travel to Everton on the opening weekend of the Premier League.
12:26How much of a test will Villarreal be, Darren?
12:29Yeah, I think it's a good pre-season friendly. Good one for the final match before the Premier
12:34League starts. Yeah, they look a good outfit obviously. They finished eighth in La Liga
12:43last season. They've got a few familiar faces as well. They recently signed
12:49Nicolas Pepe from Arsenal as well. You remember he went to Arsenal for 70 odd million and he
12:56showed flashes of his brilliance but never really nailed down a spot in the Arsenal team.
13:01So he's at Villarreal now. Hopefully fans can get a glimpse of him. Eric Bailly as well,
13:07former Man Utd defender. And Dan Juma as well, used to play for Bournemouth, Everton and Tottenham.
13:14He plays for Villarreal now as well. So yeah, I think there'll be a good test and it will
13:22more be about what Albion, how much they want to put into it, how much they want to get out of it
13:28before the Everton game in the Premier League. It's that sort of balance that you have to get
13:33about getting the fitness right without risking injury and just seeing sort of where some of the
13:40players are at. I think Lewis Dunk could make an appearance, his first of the pre-season.
13:47Obviously he was given extra time to rest after being in the England squad. Didn't play for
13:51England but he was with the squad so he was allowed extra leave, as was Billy Gilmore as well.
13:57So it'll be interesting to see whether Billy Gilmore plays with all this speculation linking
14:02him to Napoli still. So yeah, I think they're the main takeaways. Villarreal, under Marcelino,
14:11Torreira, they drew 0-0 with Notts Forest in the pre-season friendly last time out, last Friday.
14:18So they've had a couple of games against Premier League teams. I think they also played St Etienne
14:22as well before Forest and they lost 3-0 to them. So they're feeling their way into the season as
14:29well. So I think it would be a good game for Brighton and for Villarreal and a good one for
14:34the fans as well and it would be Fabian Herrlitz's first time in the dugout at the
14:41Amex Stadium as well. So he'll likely get a good welcome as well. So it's a good one,
14:46looking forward to it.
14:49What kind of team are we expecting Brighton to field Henry and who would you like to see
14:52minutes given to?
14:54Well, as Dara mentions, I do think this will be a very stiff competition for the Albion.
15:00They do look like a solid side. It would be interesting to see the two final boys in action,
15:06Jakuba Minter who was brought from Newcastle but was on loan to the side and Wiffer as well
15:12because we've seen recently that he's been back in training. I'm not sure if he's going to be
15:18ready for the first team, the first 11 on the field, but he could be used as a substitute and
15:24that would be an interesting one seeing him link up with the other defenders and seeing how he
15:30gets on really because obviously we know that it always takes a bit of time to adjust and others
15:36adjust more quickly than others and one of those players that's just been able to take to the team
15:42recently is Jakuba Minter that was mentioned. He's been absolutely quality for the Albion and
15:49in that Japan tour, you really just saw that he was trying, he was making an impact and a lot of
15:56players, especially when they come into a team, I think they want to make their mark straight away,
16:01especially as an attacker and he really did. He scored a few goals and he was really involved
16:06just getting the team up the pitch all the time and he's such a bright spark for the team and
16:11one that Albion fans are really looking forward to seeing in the Premier League and also seeing
16:15if they're going to watch this game that's our last pre-season game before the campaign kicks
16:20off. I think that Matomu would be great to see back at the Amex as well if he was given a few
16:27minutes. He's the star man for the Japanese fans here so he's been commended a lot being on tour
16:36and Koisa Dubre as well because he's just performed so impressively. He's come from
16:41Arsenal, from the academy and he's just shone so well for the Albion and it's really nice to see
16:48how well he's been doing and if he can do that in the Premier League as well then it's just another
16:53gem that Brighton have been able to uncover.
16:57What's the latest situation in the transfer market? It sounds like two players are edging
17:01closer to moves away and at least three could be coming in. What's the latest with Karl Rushworth?
17:06There are a few players that could be on the move. The long-running saga with Dennis
17:20Undaff. He spent last season on loan at Stuttgart and he's made no secret of his wish to leave
17:28Albion this summer. He's even made some comments to say that he didn't feel appreciated at Brighton
17:34when he was on loan at Stuttgart. He was never valued by Brighton so it's quite strange to hear
17:42those comments. I think it was mainly he was getting edgy. He wanted the move to progress
17:47quicker but Brighton weren't just going to let him go lightly. They really wanted to maximise
17:55the value they could and I think they have by the sounds of it. They brought him in for six
18:00million and it's looking like they're wrapping up a deal which could, with add-ons, get up to
18:04around about the 30 million mark as Undaff leaves for Stuttgart. Billy Gilmore, what's happening
18:12there? I really don't know. Unless he really wants to leave, to go to Napoli, I don't think Brighton
18:20should be selling him. We're not privy to what Gilmore wants to do but there's talk of a 15
18:28million bid coming in. Napoli started with 8 million, they've gone up to 15 and I don't think
18:35that's enough for Gilmore. So it's interesting to see what happens there. If I was Herzele,
18:40I would say look you're going to be my main man this season. I want you to play alongside
18:43Bolivar and Wiffer who have just come in and really make him feel wanted and part of this
18:49Brighton team. So it'll be interesting to see what happens there. Facundo Buonotte,
18:56he looks as though he's going to seal a loan move to Leicester. There was talk of Feyenoord,
19:02Southampton and also Celtic but it looks as though Leicester have got a loan deal without
19:09an option to buy for Buonotte. And Karl Rushworth, I think his loan move, they're going to look to
19:15loan him out to a championship club possibly but I think that's been delayed because of
19:20Verbruggen's injury. Verbruggen's not fit to start for the first couple of games. So I think once
19:25Verbruggen's back then you'll see Karl Rushworth agree a loan deal and I'm sure there'll be a
19:30number of takers for him as well. He's a class goalkeeper. So yeah, that's the main outgoings
19:38for Brighton I think in the coming days.
19:40Are you pleased that the Undab deal is finally sorted and what are your thoughts on Buonotte
19:47going to Leicester? Doesn't it strengthen a rival?
19:51Well, yeah, just to talk about Undab really quickly. I mean, I think we just had to make
19:55the best out of a really bad situation where we did have that sort of clause that allowed them
20:01to actually sort of purchase the player. And although we could have sort of added a little
20:05bit more to sort of actually have him back for ourselves, I think that the issues of
20:10the interviews that we saw of him just saying he doesn't want to be at the club,
20:14I think that just sort of sealed the deal that he was going to stay there because I
20:18don't think Bloom would have wanted sort of a bad apple in morale in the changing rooms.
20:23And I think that that could have done a lot of damage. Brighton are not like that as a team.
20:28In regards to Buononotte going to Leicester, I think it can be assumed that he'll get more
20:33game time by going there while still remaining in the Premier League, which is huge for him.
20:37But to answer the question, I do think it does sort of strengthen a rival,
20:41even though Brighton have done a lot of work in this transfer window with their recent successes
20:46as well, sort of in the Europa League and their status going up a little bit. I do think that it's
20:50a risk getting a player of 19 years old out on loan. I mean, he was featured a little bit
20:58for Zerby here and there with spells and he was really good. So I think he'll do well at Leicester.
21:03But yeah, we'll see if that was a mistake. And I'm glad that there's no
21:06buy option in this one. They've learned their lesson, hopefully.
21:10Quick question for you. Is Leicester really a rival for Brighton, do you think?
21:13It's an interesting one, isn't it? Because a few years ago, you'd have said, yeah,
21:18definitely, for sure. And it really depends how Brighton get going under Herzéla. I think if
21:24they had a more experienced manager coming in, then maybe they'd steady the ship earlier. But
21:29because Herzéla is brand new to the Premier League, he's very young. So yeah, it just depends
21:35how Brighton start. If they have a dodgy start, then Leicester will be a rival. Yeah, yeah.
21:40Absolutely. Sam, what do you think?
21:44Yeah, I think so. I think time will tell, obviously, how Brighton get on. The new signings
21:48gel and how Herzéla gets on in the Premier League. But I think Leicester are a really good team,
21:52a really strong team. And there's no reason why they can't perform well as well and potentially
21:57rival Brighton higher up the lead. It doesn't necessarily mean Brighton have to have a bad
22:00season to rival Leicester. It could be that Leicester do just get that way and get relegated.
22:06Yeah, it's a difficult one. I think Juan Anote is obviously a great player on his day. He can
22:14score some absolute belters. And the last thing you want is to be doing that for Leicester and
22:19that adversity impact Brighton. So yeah, definitely interesting one. I'm definitely
22:22surprised that he's going to come to the Premier League.
22:25Yeah, brilliant.
22:36Yeah.
