The KL High Court has called on Datuk Seri Najib Razak to enter his defence on four charges of power abuse and 21 charges of money laundering involving RM2.28bil linked to 1Malaysia Development Bhd (1MDB).

00:00The KL High Court on Wednesday ordered Datuk Seri Najib Razak to enter his defence on four
00:07charges of using his position to obtain gratification totalling 2.28 billion ringgit in 1MDB funds
00:15and 21 money laundering charges involving the same amount.
00:20Justice Datuk Colin Lawrence Sekwera made the ruling after finding that the prosecution
00:25had established a prima facie case against the former prime minister on all the charges
00:30at the end of the prosecution's case.
00:33In response, Najib's counsel Tan Sri Mohammed Shafi Abdullah said that his client has nothing
00:40to hide and that he will give evidence from the stand.
00:44After the court interpreter read his options, Najib elected to give evidence under oath.
00:49The charges were framed under Section 23, Subsection 1 of the MACC Act 2009 and punishable
00:57under Section 24, Subsection 1 of the same Act.
01:01If he is convicted at the end of the defence case, Najib is facing imprisonment of up to
01:0620 years and a fine of five times the amount of gratification or 10,000 ringgit, whichever
01:11is higher.
01:1271-year-old Najib was sentenced to 12 years in prison in 2022 after being found guilty
01:20of graft in a separate 1MDB-linked case.
01:24The sentence was later halved by a pardons board chaired by the 16th Yang di-Pertuan
01:28Agong, with Najib set to be released in August 2028.
