00:00In the centre of Klang lies Jalan Tengku Kelana, one of the oldest streets in the royal city.

00:15It is named after Sultan Musa Giatudin Riayat Shah, the 7th Sultan of Selangor who was also

00:21known as Tengku Kelana.

00:26The street here is lined with pre-war shophouses and plays an integral part in Klang's economy

00:32while cultivating its uniquely multicultural roots.

00:39Dating back to the 15th century, this was where Tun Perat lived when he administered

00:44Klang on behalf of the Melaka government.

00:49There were also Minangkabau traders who journeyed from Sumatra to Klang and eventually made

00:55their homes here.

00:57By the end of the 19th century, the street evolved into a bustling hub where rubber was

01:03collected before it was exported.

01:06Even Malayan business magnates Lok Yu and Lok Chow Kit built shophouses here.

01:25There were also Indian Muslims who set up shops along the street.

01:47Among the businesses with deep roots in Jalan Tengku Kelana is a quaint grocery store called

01:51A. Jamal Muhammad & Co., operating since 1916.

01:58Third generation owner Muhammad Rafiq Jamal Muhammad Bacha grew up here and even got married

02:05on the first floor of the shophouse that the business occupies.

02:09Rafi recalls the fond memories they shared with their Chinese neighbors.

02:26Over the years, many other Indian traders also started businesses along the street,

02:56selling various items from lush silks to fragrant spices and scrumptious food.

03:03This led to the area being widely known as Little India.

03:18Every year as Deepavali approaches, the street transforms into a vibrant magical kaleidoscope

03:25of colors and sounds, drawing visitors from near and far.

03:56I'm from Nepal, I do see Chinese and Malaysians walking in, mingling with the crowd.

04:03They are also excited.

04:05In a particular country, I see Indonesia, Japan, Mauritius, Singapore, Johor to Penang.

04:14Customers are coming for Deepavali purchases.

04:26Today, Jalan Tengku Kelana radiates an unmistakable charm,

04:30steadily holding its own against the test of time.

04:34Our hope for Tengku Kelana Klang to continue to grow as a vibrant place for everyone in Malaysia.

04:41I wish this place where traditions are celebrated,

04:45where upcoming generations connect with their roots,

04:48and where everyone can enjoy the beauty of Indian culture.

04:53I also hope that we can keep changing and improving while staying true to the warmth and authenticity
