00:00There are many small towns across Malaysia that are filled with rich history and compelling stories.
00:07One of them is Serendah in Selangor.
00:11FMT Lifestyle recently took a tour around the quaint town with E Yoke Chan,
00:16a long-time Serendah resident and author of Serendah Then and Now.
00:21These are among the highlights.
00:24Number 1. Macau Street
00:28What makes this street special?
00:30It's the only Macau Street in Malaysia that has retained its original name.
00:36Most of the double-story shophouses here, which date back to the early 1900s,
00:41continue to stand the test of time.
00:45Number 2. Wayang Street
00:48What looks quiet and empty today was once lined with brothels, opium dens and Chinese opera houses.
00:57This street is also known as Sihangkai, which means latrine lane in Cantonese,
01:02thanks to a latrine that once stood at the intersection of Wayang Street and Hospital Street.
01:09Number 3. The Seven Wells of Serendah
01:13A dam with seven sluices, this site is a popular attraction in the town.
01:18Water is channeled to these sluices from seven-shaft spillways,
01:22which look like wells from the surface and inspired the name of the place.
01:28Number 4. Gurdwara Nanak Ser Serendah
01:32Yet another building that is still proudly standing is Gurdwara Nanak Ser Serendah.
01:38Dating back to 1897, it is believed to be one of the oldest gurdwaras in the country.
01:46Number 5 and 6. Shinsieye and Hok Leng Keng Temples
01:51Two other houses of worship over a century old are the Shinsieye and Hok Leng Keng Temples.
01:58They are located next to each other and adjacent to Gurdwara Nanak Ser Serendah.
02:04Shinsieye Temple is believed to have been built by Yap Ah Loy in 1898 for the Nai Chang coolies from the Hakka community.
02:14The Hok Leng Keng Temple, on the other hand, was built in 1899 by the Hokkien community.
02:20But some believe this temple dates back to 1869 as it was relocated from its previous location on the bank of the Serendah River, which often flooded.
