00:30In the data of the Newborn Screening Reference Center of the University of the Philippines,
00:37more than 1.4 million babies were born in the country in 2022.
00:44But of that number, only 90% or more than 1.3 million went through newborn screening.
00:53Even though this number is high, there are still some mothers who do not know the importance of a newborn screening test.
01:02Like Rowena, all of her five children did not go through a newborn screening.
01:08No one told me to go through a newborn screening.
01:11So, I'm just like a companion.
01:14But experts say, it's important to go through a newborn screening test within 24 hours.
01:22There are 28 diseases that can be diagnosed with a newborn screening.
01:28Most of them are mental retardation.
01:31And the most dangerous one is the death of a child.
01:35If we don't know about this, we will die.
01:38Every first Sunday of October is Newborn Screening Awareness Week.
01:43That's why the GMA Kapuso Foundation is united
01:46with the newly created Newborn Screening Caravan of the Department of Health, Calabarzon, in Pililya.
01:53There are still a few who are giving birth at home,
01:56and have not been able to go through this type of examination.
02:02We also gave them newborn kits, baby swaddles, diapers, hygiene kits, electric kettles, and food.
02:11She was lucky enough to receive a crib.
02:14We chose Pililya, Rizal because it is one of the most affected by the recent typhoon Enteng.
02:23And based on the results of the Newborn Screening Center Southern Luzon,
02:28the babies examined in Pililya are normal and healthy.
02:34On October 17, we will also hold a newborn screening in Tayabas, Quezon.
02:42You can count on the support of the Department of Health and the GMA Kapuso Foundation
02:47if you have a disease that you would like to examine.
02:53Every year, the GMA Kapuso Foundation distributes free hand and arm prostheses.
03:00The LN4 Foundation is a sponsor.
03:03And our guest today is Rojas Oriental Mindoro
03:07to spread hope and help to PWDs in their daily lives.
03:17Hello, I have good news for you. I am a queen owner.
03:22This is Joy. She is a year old.
03:25She was given birth without arms and legs.
03:28Even though she was normally breastfed by her mother.
03:32But instead of embarrassing herself,
03:35she used it as an inspiration for people like her,
03:40persons with disabilities, or PWDs, through vlogging.
03:46She also helps with house chores, sewing, and singing.
03:52I want to show myself to the whole world
03:57so that I can show that I can do what I want to do.
04:04Even so, Joy has not yet been saved from PWDs.
04:09She is now being filled with the love of her parents.
04:14All parents need to fight for their children.
04:17We raised her to fear God.
04:20She should always be like that.
04:23She should not have a weak heart.
04:25We always say, we are her arms and legs.
04:29Joy was given arm and hand prosthesis,
04:33LN4 Foundation in Katuang,
04:36and Larendon College in Rojas, Oriental Mindoro.
04:40They can use a lot of prosthetic arms because they are grippy.
04:46They can hold things that they can use in their daily lives.
04:51They can write.
04:53We were also able to give 10 wheelchairs to PWDs and senior citizens.
04:59It's life-changing for our beneficiaries.
05:02We are very thankful to LN4 Foundation and Larendon College.
05:10It has been more than a month since the storm Enteng.
05:14But until now, some residents in Pililya, Rizal, have not been able to get up.
05:21Their livelihood is still affected.
05:24That's why GMA Kapuso Foundation visited them for help.
05:34It's hard for the residents of Barangay Takungan in Pililya, Rizal, to fish.
05:40Aside from not being able to fish,
05:42the water lilies are too large and thick.
05:45Some fish have almost died.
05:47Because of the large number of water lilies,
05:49during the flood, the water lilies were too thick.
05:54The boat could not get out.
05:56Even if caught, it's hard for them to sell.
05:59The buyers are worried that a resident might have been affected
06:05by the storm Enteng.
06:07And until now, they haven't been able to earn a living.
06:10The people here in Pililya don't want to eat fish
06:15because they are afraid that people will eat fish.
06:23It's really hard for us here.
06:25We can't even afford to buy fish.
06:29When it comes to fish, we just ask for it.
06:33To help the fishermen and other affected residents,
06:37GMA Kapuso Foundation visited the nearby barangay in Pililya
06:43to distribute food packs and soap to more than 5,000 individuals.
06:48We also held a clean-up drive in Lawa.
06:51The ATF Infantry Battalion of the Philippine Army
06:56helped reduce the number of water lilies.
06:59And now, the residents are able to fish again.
07:03The fishermen are thankful to GMA Kapuso for their great help.
07:09For those who want to help, you can deposit in our bank accounts
07:13or send to Cebuana Lawalier.
07:16You can also do it online via GCash, Shopee, Lazada, Globe Rewards,
07:20and Metro Bank Credit Cards.
