00:00Every year, the income of the Sepultureros increases
00:03and the search for a life for their families comes from the dead.
00:06Their story is reported by Janna Pineda of the Philippine Information Agency, National Capital Region.
00:15In the cemeteries where our loved ones are buried alive,
00:20we have people whom the guardians trust.
00:23They are the Sepultureros.
00:26They are considered to be workers in the informal sector of the country.
00:31They have no permanent source of income and no regular income.
00:36Their main source of daily necessities
00:39is the maintenance and cleaning of the graves of the dead.
00:44Ondas, or the Day of the Dead, is the time when the Sepultureros are at their peak.
00:50One of them is Irish Santos, also known as Tasoy,
00:53who is a 25-year-old Sepulturero in Barangka Municipal Cemetery in Marikina City.
00:59According to him,
01:00their biggest income is around P300 in cleaning the graves.
01:06This is getting smaller as the families who collect from them are not able to pay their bills.
01:13Every time Ondas reaches its peak,
01:15the Sepultureros are eager to increase their income.
01:19But due to the fact that they work a lot,
01:22their livelihood is still a huge burden.
01:26According to Tasoy,
01:27if there are no deaths,
01:29they also have no livelihood.
01:32This is the only source of income that they earn daily
01:36as well as for their children's education.
01:38I live as long as my family lives.
01:41As long as I am here, I will be able to afford it.
01:46It is important for our family to live.
01:49There are many ways.
01:50We don't have to worry about anything.
01:52One of the main preparations that he does
01:56at the peaks that he watches every time Ondas approaches
01:59is cleaning the graves for the families who visit their relatives.
02:04For most, Ondas is a time to look for the loved ones in life.
02:10But for Sepultureros like Tasoy,
02:14Ondas is a time to look for life.
02:17From the Philippine Information Agency NCR,
02:20Janna Pineda for Balitang Pambansa.
