00:00One of the things that some of our countrymen look forward to every November 1 is the traditional fireworks display in Sagada Mountain Province.
00:08But the officials of Sagada remind us that this is not for tourism, but it has a deep meaning.
00:15This is Valerie Jane Taguba of PIA in Balitang Pambansang.
00:21Every first day of November, this cemetery lights up in Sagada
00:26as the residents of Saleng or Fatwood perform their last rites as a tribute to their loved ones.
00:35This observation, which is called Panaga-Apoy or Pagsisindi ng Apoy,
00:40is different because instead of lighting a candle,
00:44they use a lantern to shout near the graves.
00:49This is a reminder and a tribute to their loved ones.
00:53To give warmth to our dead loved ones,
00:57we will build a bonfire so they can be close to their dead ones.
01:05By building a fire and have a bonfire with them.
01:08Because we believe that they are still there.
01:11After Panaga-Apoy, around 7 to 9,
01:16we will go to a house and we will eat there as a family.
01:23Tradition usually starts with a mass in the afternoon
01:27and the blessing of the Saleng before the residents go to the cemetery.
01:33The priest will also go around to bless the dead.
01:37At the same time of the arrival of the dark,
01:39the residents will light their Saleng near the dead.
01:44We have to make sure that it's safe.
01:46When we do it, it should be safe and it should be done without chaos.
01:53Without wildfire. It should be regulated.
01:58This tradition symbolizes the deep connection of the community to their ancestors
02:05and their respect for their ancestors.
02:09Officials remind that Panaga-Apoy is not a tourism,
02:13but a quiet tradition that has a deep meaning for the community.
02:19From PIA Cordillera, Valerie J. Taguba for Balitang Pambansa.
