Mike McDaniel comments on how much the Buffalo's past success got brought up to the team this week. What did Tua learn from Week 2 Buffalo loss?
Transcript
00:00Two it's the confusion. I don't really understand. This is usually a reserve for a losing Monday
00:07Yeah, but one and seven against Buffalo
00:11You just wait. It's like The Undertaker. It's just like
00:14Josh Allen's coming in with a robe and a sickle and you're just waiting for it. Just put me out of my misery, dude
00:21Yeah, that's how you want to do it. So if you win this game though could go a little rutski
00:28If if I win this game, even though I've only won one out of the last eight
00:33Well, yeah, that is true
00:35He's only he's only lost to the Dolphins twice in his career and like the both of them are like last-second losses
00:41I think one Charles Klay dropped a ball. He never loses to the Dolphins
00:45The other one the same in the last game
00:48Yeah, really
00:51I'm not even sure if it's him anymore. I don't know if it's McDermott. I don't know if it's just the weather
00:55Who do I blame? I don't even know to blame them
00:58through tables
01:01No, one one of the things is and
01:05Usually your better defenses can do this
01:10They can play
01:12pretty good
01:14with their front seven
01:16Or front six and allow your allow you defensively to play two deep safeties
01:23If you don't do anything in
01:27the line of scrimmage to control the linebackers the linebackers get depth and
01:33that
01:34creates small windows to throw the football if
01:37You notice every time to makes that throw through the middle where that timing throw is
01:43The linebackers not there if
01:46You don't affect the linebacker. They get depth and that is the key for cover two
01:51It's not the two deep safeties. Everybody thinks you can't go deep. That's not the issue
01:56The issue is the linebackers get depth
01:59Usually teams that play really well cover pretty good cover to have linebackers who can run
02:06smallish
02:07speed linebackers who can get depth
02:10those are the killers of
02:13Your your past patterns so you got to affect them either with a shallow cross
02:20See because what a lot of teams do is, you know, the linebackers drop deep
02:23They run a shallow cross with somebody underneath them. They'll step up a little bit now you got to over the top
02:30Right, so there's a lot of things you can do as far as the Dolphins you got Tyreek
02:36He's gonna go down the field if you can widen
02:40That safety on that side
02:43Then you have a chance to throw the ball in the middle of the field. I think a big
02:49Key this week is gonna be John who Smith
02:52He's gonna have to beat those linebackers. He's gonna have to be able to catch that ball in the middle good
02:57Yeah, yeah, you know, he's like I think the thing that it's just like it's one of those I
03:04Got to see him get through a whole game being able to play clean because this is like they've already they already know what Buffalo's
03:10Gonna do like this is this story is like as old as time. We've seen it we
03:14They haven't changed. They haven't put wrinkles in it. They haven't changed. No, they're gonna play too deep safety
03:23Because you haven't beaten it yet. And that's how it works. In fact, there are other teams that try and do it
03:31That's why and here's the deal that's why
03:35They struggle sometimes against the better defenses
03:39Because the better defenses don't have to adjust to you. They can still play their defense
03:44So you got to find a way to affect them and make them adjust
03:47And again a fresh Vaughn Miller back this week the old love a fresh week, you know
03:52What does he what was he suspended for? Was he it was it was he like?
03:56Yeah, it was I don't know if it was produced for behavior, I'm not really sure what it was for it was for those personal conduct policy
04:06The team of the league
04:08Uh, well, I think it was a league because it's suspended four games without pay for violating the NFL's personal conduct policy
04:15The league announced it. Oh, wait, that means you know, that is
04:19Domestic disturbance or something. Yeah, something like that. Yeah
04:23Says he stays mum on suspension said focus on rejoining the bills
04:28That's pretty good for something to happen and it not reach the news outlets
04:34He got he got lucky though. It just the it happened at a point in time in a year
04:39Yeah, cuz sometimes that stuff then sometimes that suspension stuff doesn't come to like a year later. Yeah. Oh, okay
04:45Okay, right or it came like right before the season started or?
04:49So, yeah, but
04:52That's the thing. Yeah, it sucks that you know exactly what they're gonna do
04:57How are they gonna do it? You know how to beat it. It's just a matter of executing now in
05:03All the games before this one
05:06The one thing that kills cover two is a tight end
05:11Tight ends kill cover two
05:13Because now you're asking your linebacker to guard a tight end what about like we did see you know that Boston runs up the middle like
05:22in
05:24That helps also because now you got now think about this
05:29So you run you have you have effective runs against cover two
05:35Now they got to do one or two things
05:37Or those linebackers are going to be super aggressive to try to stop the run then you got the throws over the top
05:46If you start doing that then what they'll do is they'll roll the safety down and
05:52What teams try to do is
05:55Roll that safety down before they start doing the run
05:58And then they'll roll that safety down before they start doing the run
06:02And
06:03what teams try to do is roll that safety down before the snap and
06:09then make you adjust and
06:11Then get to cover two from there
06:14But if you try and do that
06:17You're leaving your cornerback on an island with Tyreke O'Whattle
06:22Because you ain't gonna be able to get over there to help him from around the line of scrimmage
06:26So there's a lot of different things you can do
06:29But here's the thing if you never take advantage or never have success to affect the other move
06:36It's a move point and that's kind of what happened in the game earlier in the season
06:41Yeah, it's just didn't play their best game either
06:44Yeah, they didn't and I think the thing is
06:46You know
06:47That's been frustrating is it does feel like the Dolphins have just set all their opponents up for success because they just can't
06:53Execute they have the they have this the most untimely turnovers
06:56I do say like I don't think sealer is completely ruled out yet
07:01But man trying to go win a game against that run attack without him is going to be a tall task
07:06You're gonna have to put up points like this cannot be one of these things where it's like, oh
07:10Miami is you know, you're having a 17 point stinker. You'll have no shot. It feels like right
07:16so that's kind of
07:19You know
07:20every week
07:23you go through and
07:26You realize
07:29But keep in mind teams don't make adjustments out of the realm do
07:37So if a team only plays cover two, they're not gonna adjust too much
07:44They're gonna just
07:46show it differently, but they're gonna end up in cover to a
07:50Team that doesn't blitz
07:52Isn't all of a sudden gonna start blitz and all-out because you're scared of the mistakes you could have in the secondary
07:58They might change it up every now and then
08:00So as you get to six seven eight games
08:04You have a pretty good idea of what the other team's gonna do. It's just a matter of
08:10Can you execute to make them adjust to make them get out of their comfort zone?
08:15because again, I
08:17can't think of
08:19in recent history a time where offensively
08:25You put them in a position where they had to make some kind of adjustment or you're never gonna stop you right it just never
08:30Happened on the other side
08:34They just moved the ball and
08:36Did what they wanted to do and if they couldn't do nothing then they just give the moose the ball and let him run around
08:43so
08:44this is where at
08:47some point
08:50Chop Robinson who does a hell of a job getting free is
08:54Gonna have to make a play for sure
08:57And and so that's it like which I don't know like it's it's hey
09:01We're still waiting still on the in the first sack on it and it's tough
09:05It's like this is so much pressure on this kid his his first year. I don't think there's um, I
09:13Don't think there's a lot of pressure that the team's putting on him because they do see him having some success
09:20the problem is is he's probably putting pressure on himself because he realizes that
09:26he doesn't have any and
09:29so
09:30You want to affect the quarterback?
09:34But you still have to be poised enough in
09:37Your efforts to affect the quarterback. You don't give him more of a window to throw the ball
09:42Let's get the headlines brought to you by Doral Kia Doral Kia choose from over 500 new key miles and inventory like the sportage
09:48Sorrento and the Telluride remember when it comes to Kia the great deals are at Doral Kia Mike McDaniel
09:53This is him earlier in the week talking about all of Buffalo's past
09:57Success against his team here was McCoach and it's always interesting how how you know
10:04football is very similar to life and so
10:07circumstances
10:08kind of gate or direct
10:11Your tonality what you focus on
10:14and and right now
10:17You know, I think the the our main focus is
10:23Absolutely positively how we play football
10:25and how we
10:27How we do things to win games not things to lose games. So
10:34Yeah, I mean everybody it's a division road game against an opponent
10:39that
10:41you know is
10:43Everyone in our divisions chasing and and and that's uh, you know, everybody everybody knows that
10:51So
11:00Tonality
11:02Looked it up. He got lucky with that one. Oh
11:05I start looking at my feet
11:08Do you think it might be Dale looks at the the room one and he thinks to himself these yes, he's like, I'm a yellow
11:16I'm a yellow. I hit him with one of them Yale words or
11:21He looking around to see if Leroy Tobin in that room
11:25So laughter doesn't break out. I
11:28Can't like if we in serious meetings, I cannot be nowhere near Tobin
11:34I cannot be nowhere near Tobin
11:37Because he'll do this we'll be sitting down looking at a little paper to follow along and he'll go
11:44The last time I thought about that was during the Alonzo morning interview
11:52Thank god it's not here
11:55There's some stuff
11:57It wasn't what he said. It was the way he described it
12:00Okay, he's still the best like the interview was awesome, but there was one answer where I was like
12:11You're the guy you almost got inspired I know that's why I'm saying like I can't if I looked up but I saw your face
12:17I would have like I would have lost it. I would have lost it
12:21I was sitting next to the Google. I was sit right
12:27So I'm sitting here we look at our paper
12:31And me and Tobin just made eyes
12:35And I was like
12:38I just don't know. How did no one else laugh? Like how did no one else?
12:44Because they don't do stuff like us like
12:50To us says, uh, this is what he learned
12:53Uh, this is what he learned from week two when they're lost to buffalo
12:57I would say it doesn't change. I would say if you look back at the way we played buffalo
13:04earlier in the year, um
13:06Three three turnovers. You can't do that. Like you just can't do that and i'm just speaking from an offensive perspective
13:12Can't worry about what the defense does. They're gonna do what they do
13:15like we we gotta
13:17Eliminate turnovers eliminate takeaways in that sense. We gotta stay ahead of the sticks
13:23Take what they give us and if it's a 16 play drive and we get points on the board
13:27we're okay with that and we're willing to do that and
13:30This team is you know, you got to go battle them out for 60 minutes. That's what that's what these kind of games are
13:36Did infuse him intangibles getting river craycraft back this week. It seems like so he one of the things that
13:43I appreciate is
13:46He stayed on him
13:48On the offensive side of the ball, right?
13:52um
13:54and
13:55really
13:56commented on what they did wrong
13:59And and that's kind of how you own it, you know, you you you make those things better
14:05If you start talking about the the game in general, then people gonna look at you and say hey, buddy
14:09You had three turnovers
14:12You know, so yeah, I just think they they
14:17A
14:20Lot of stupid
14:24And unforced errors have been happening to this offense. Yep in recent history
14:32and
14:33I don't know and and people say it's paying attention to details, but I don't even know if that's it
14:39like some of them are unfortunate and they're
14:43badly timed
14:45Uh, and sometimes
14:48It does like I wonder if it's this because like everybody
14:52Who talks about stopping this offense, you know, the motions they use all the complexities that go into it
14:59Football heads like when it works they rave about it. But like if it is that hard if it doesn't work
15:03it just feels like
15:05the margin for error
15:07Can lead to disaster more so than right mistakes, right? It's like at what point?
15:12And I won't say simplify it
15:15But at what point
15:18Do you have to be careful?
15:21With all the stuff you're doing pre-snap
15:24To where you only end up hurting yourself, right and it doesn't make that much how much of an impact here
15:30Here's what you have to weigh
15:31How much of an impact?
15:34Is that motion that quick motion or that fast motion going to make?
15:40Or how difficult is it that you're going to have two guys moving
15:44Because we've seen a lot of times the receiver on the right is going way wide you got trips on the left
15:51They start doing their little motion thing and the guy hasn't gotten set out there out there yet
15:55It's basically like can you temper it from shooting yourself in the foot to just stubbing your toe?
16:05I'm sorry. No, go ahead. You were right. Go ahead. Push the button push the button minus one
16:10Why
16:13He was just waiting for the okay
16:16That was like
