00:00On World Fertility Day, FMT Lifestyle chats with fertility specialist Dr. Jasdev Singh

00:06about infertility and what one can do about it.

00:09Infertility is a common issue affecting both male and women.

00:13It's defined as the inability to conceive a child after one year of trying

00:20if you're below 35 years of age and after six months of trying if you're above 35 years of age.

00:27It's a female's age again, not a male's age.

00:33That's because the quality and quantity of her eggs decline considerably as she ages

00:39while the impact is less significant on a man as his sperm can be replenished.

00:48That is a bigger myth because the fact is it is a couple.

00:52I always tell my patients it's always a couple thing.

00:56Honestly, male infertility actually is on the rise now.

00:5940 to 50 percent of infertility is caused by males themselves.

01:08A second common myth is infertility is a sign of a personal failure or a moral failing.

01:14But that's a fact is infertility is actually a medical condition

01:17and it's not a reflection of your morality or anything of that sort.

01:21Okay, I think it's very important.

01:22Don't blame yourself.

01:24Common female fertility issues include ovulation disorders, polycystic ovary syndrome,

01:30blocked fallopian tubes, uterine fibroids and endometriosis,

01:35a condition when tissue similar to the lining of the uterus grows outside of the uterus.

01:50Actually, the fact is PCOS can have health consequences.

01:54Heart diseases, diabetes mellitus.

01:57It also can cause something as endometrial cancer like uterine lining cancer.

02:06We have thin PCOS patients as well.

02:08So we cannot generalize or stigmatize PCOS people to be obese.

02:14For infertile males, common issues include low sperm count, poor sperm quality and

02:20azoospermia, a condition where there is no sperm in the ejaculate.

02:25Specific fertility treatments for males include surgical sperm retrieval or

02:30hormonal therapy for those with azoospermia.

02:33Meanwhile, specific options for females include assisted reproductive technology

02:38such as intrauterine insemination where sperm is injected directly into the uterus

02:44or in vitro fertilization where eggs are fertilized with sperm

02:48in a laboratory and transferred to the uterus.

02:56There's no study to suggest that IVF babies are more inclined towards any health conditions.

03:02The fact is, it's not, okay.

03:04The thing is, the younger you are as a female, your success is much higher.

03:09Early awareness of one's fertility can help a person to understand their health better,

03:15especially for those with a family history of fertility issues.

03:19So if you are aware that you have a medical condition like PCOS or endometriosis,

03:32or a blocked tube, or in guys, azoospermia with no sperms, you can address it much earlier.

03:38By identifying these issues earlier, couples can make more informed family planning decisions

03:44such as exploring treatment options or considering

03:48alternative plans to welcome a bundle of joy into their lives.

03:52Conjunction with World Fertility Day, the take-home message I want to say is

03:55start your fertility assessment early and your fertility journey early

03:59because we know age matters.

04:02The younger you start your treatment and the earlier you start treatment,

04:05the success is brilliant and never give up.
