00:00 Two Australian surgeons involved in the cardiothoracic surgery postgraduate training programme jointly
00:07 offered by University Technology Mara and the National Heart Institute say they were
00:12 assured it would respect diversity, equity and inclusion.
00:16 Dr Aubrey Almeida, past president of the Australian and New Zealand Society of Cardiac and Thoracic
00:22 Surgeons and Monash University Australia's Dr Julian Smith, both sit on the programme's
00:27 board of studies.
00:29 Almeida, who also spoke on Smith's behalf, noted that they are providing pro bono assistance
00:34 as international advisors on the board of study of the UITM IJN cardiothoracic surgery
00:39 postgraduate programme and are not acting as representatives of the ANZSCTS or any hospital.
00:46 A debate is presently raging whether UITM should allow non-Bhumiputra postgraduate students
00:52 into its programme, sparked by the Malaysian Medical Council's refusal to recognise surgeons
00:57 qualifying through the Health Ministry's Parallel Pathway programme.
01:00 Dr Raja Amin Rajamuktar suggested a temporary credit transfer to address the issue.
01:06 However, Malay nationalist groups oppose the suggestion, advocating for UITM to remain
01:11 exclusively for Bhumiputra students.
01:13 The Malaysian Medical Association supports temporarily opening UITM to facilitate recognition
01:18 of specialists.
01:19 Currently, several surgeons and trainees face uncertainty regarding their registration
01:24 in Malaysia.
