Michigan auto workers doubt Trump's priorities

A hundred plus numbers of the United Auto Workens (UAW) attend a star-studded Get Out The Vote Rally in Detroit on Nov. 1, 2024. Among the high-ranking public officials participating was US Rep. for Michigan, Debbie Dingell, as well as representatives Alexandria Ocasio Cortez and Pramila Jayapal. UAW President, Shawn Fain, also spoke. The event was held on UAW grounds on the Solidarity House Lawn overlooking the Detroit River just four days before Election Day where auto workers in Michigan could be decisive.

00:00I can tell you under this administration that we're selling cars and we're doing pretty
00:17good.
00:18I've not seen much layoffs.
00:19In fact, last I just read is our unemployment is down to 4%, you know, 4%.
00:26That's pretty damn good.
00:33Well, he's a liar.
00:42I mean, come on.
00:43I mean, believe it or not, over the years, as you see the deceptions that's happening
00:53between him and the reality of what's really happening to us as working class.
00:59We feel it.
01:00We feel it.
01:01We know he's a, he does not represent the working class.
01:05I guess that's the bottom line.
01:07He just does not represent us.
01:14I came here when I was 16 years old by myself.
01:18My parents...
01:19All right, let's give it up one more time for a second.
01:26No, I don't think they get enough credit.
01:28I think that they've helped the auto industry and Obama before that helped us.
01:35And I haven't seen Trump do anything.
01:37I've seen him take credit for moving a big truck that he had nothing to do with because
01:43I was part of it and he had zero to do with it.
01:47So he takes credit for stuff he doesn't do.
01:49Whereas all they've done is try to help us.
01:51They've actually even walked on the picket lines to help the UAW, you know, and their
01:56belief in trying to get a better agreement for our workers.
01:59That are the billionaires that own the buildings.
02:02But as she said, the people that work are not going, we are going and when we fight.
02:11A moment in 2020 where I had to shelter in my own home, protecting my kid while people
02:16with guns were outside protesting the election because of lies that they'd been told that
02:21weren't true about the election.
02:24So let me tell you this, we know that could come again in just a few days, in just a few
02:28weeks.
02:29But that will not stop us from getting out the vote and making sure every voice is heard
02:33in this state.
02:35This is our house.
02:36This is your house.
02:39You know, in America, you know, it's awesome, you know, all of you to be here to do something
02:43here in our house, you know.
02:46Yeah, within our union, we've seen, we've seen, you know, numbers go up for Kamala Harris,
02:52especially in the last month and a half.
02:53You know, with our with our efforts, with talking to our members, engaging our members,
02:56we already had a majority supporting Kamala Harris, but it's went up by over 20 percent
03:00just in the last month.
03:01Tell people the facts.
03:02He didn't protect automotive jobs.
03:03First of all, I want to thank you for everything that you are doing.
03:04I wasn't in the industry in the 70s, but I remember the 70s.
03:18He doesn't understand how these workers are skilled workers, how hard it is to build a
03:22car.
03:23And to say that it's just it comes in a box and you just have to assemble it shows he
03:30has no understanding of the job that so many Americans do across this country.
03:37So these actions we take in the next four days are going to make a difference in the
03:40outcome.
03:44We spent the last four months tapping into this and they spread lies.
03:49You know, they even encouraged breaking the law, using threats, surveillance, intimidation.
03:54Donald Trump's done everything in his power to divide us.
03:58Well, I think there's working class people have been fooled into believing that.
04:02But I mean, you know, I think it's comical.
04:05I mean, look at Donald Trump when he played dress up and tried to look like a McDonald's
04:09worker.
04:10Donald Trump doesn't even understand what a McDonald's worker goes through.
04:12He has no clue.
04:13And, you know, they close the restaurant down for him to have a, you know, a private audience
04:18that, you know, was all staged.
04:19I mean, the man doesn't know what working class people go through in any way, shape
04:23or form.
04:24He's never had to work like we do.
04:25He's never understood what it's like living paycheck to paycheck, not having enough money
04:29at the end of the week to pay your bills.
04:30So I don't believe working.
04:32I believe the majority of working class people see him for what he is.
04:35And I think people are waking up to what he is.
04:37The soul of our nation and the future of the working class, that's what this is about.
04:43I'm going to tell you that neither of the candidates have won the state of Michigan
04:57yet.
04:58We are.
04:59I'm not old.
05:00I'm seasoned.
05:01I've seen many presidential elections.
05:02I've chaired them.
05:03I've run them.
05:04We've never been this close.
05:13We've never been this close.
