00:00Firefighters searched through the tangled debris left in the wake of deadly flash floods.
00:06With dozens still unaccounted for, the teams here are looking for survivors, but hopes
00:11are slim.
00:13Seeing so much destruction in their city has been too much for some.
00:18It's heartbreaking.
00:19We all grew up here.
00:21These are our neighbourhoods.
00:23And to see all this destruction, it's horrible.
00:26This is what people here would have had to contend with.
00:29Trapped in garages, wading through waters that got up to their chests or even higher.
00:35Distributing aid to destroyed towns and villages, some of which have been without food, water
00:40and power for days, is now the top priority.
00:43The task is enormous, and this Saturday, Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez announced he's sending
00:48reinforcements.
00:49We're deploying an additional 5,000 national police and civil guards today, doubling the
00:55number of those already deployed to bring the total number of both civil guard and national
00:59police sent to the areas affected to 10,000.
01:03Sanchez says this is the largest deployment of army and security personnel in peacetime.
01:09It's not hard to understand why.
01:11This is Spain's deadliest disaster in decades.
01:14Before the extra help arrives, thousands of volunteers continue to pour into the worst
01:18affected areas.
01:20Authorities though told France 24's team on the ground that volunteers should stay home
01:25to avoid congestion on the roads.
01:28I know the population wants to help, but for us it's difficult to do our job.
01:34We struggle to get through the city.
01:36It takes us one hour to travel three kilometres.
01:41There are now new weather alerts over the Balearic Islands, Catalonia and Valencia,
01:46where rains are expected to continue throughout the weekend.
