00:16A traditional but modern house of Ivatans was built in Uyugan, Batanes
00:22The DOST funded the project Assessment, Development and Preservation for Typhoon and Earthquake Resilient Ivatan Houses.
00:30The project aims to protect the architectural heritage of Ivatans from calamities, especially when a typhoon hits the area.
00:41According to Cagayan State University OIC President Arthur Ibanez,
00:45Through the use of modern engineering in the foundation, walls and roof,
00:50the stone houses of Ivatans can be strengthened without sacrificing its cultural value.
00:56Based on the design of the structure, it will be equipped with thick 360mm masonry walls and double wall cladding,
01:04which is similar to the traditional houses of Ivatans,
01:08although it will be more durable and strong due to the modern method.
01:13A monitoring station will also be set up for the typhoons and earthquakes in the project
01:18to see how strong it is that it will provide important data and information for the construction of the project.
01:27The groundbreaking ceremony of the project was held before the typhoon Christine hit.
01:33It was led by DOST Uyugan Mayor Jonathan Nanud,
01:36Architect Jefferson Aviva of the Ivatan Houses Project,
01:40Batanes State College of BSC President Joe Vidurante,
01:43and CSU President Arthur Ibanez.
01:46Support will also come from CSU and BSC in the construction of the project,
01:50which will greatly help the Ivatans.
01:53Most of the houses in Batanes are made of stone and wood,
01:56which is mixed with apog or lime,
01:59and the roof is made from kugon leaves.
