British Museum exhibit shows Picasso's lesser-known printmaker side

Pablo Picasso created some 2,400 prints throughout his career, works that may be seen as a kind of personal diary, highlighting a lesser-known side to the Spanish artist. They are on display in a new exhibition at the British Museum, titled ‘Picasso: printmaker’.’ Around one hundred prints will be on show at the prestigious London museum until 30 March 2025. "We really wanted to show that printmaking was a really important, creative area of his work,” says curator Catherine Daunt.

00:00Yeah, I think his paintings are better known. He made many prints. He made about 2,400 prints
00:14throughout his career, so he was a really prolific printmaker. But I think people are
00:20more familiar with his paintings, and so we really wanted to show that printmaking was
00:24a really important creative area of his work, and he achieved great things in printmaking.
00:31He always included elements of his own life in his work, so we do learn a lot about his
00:36life through his prints. We see the people who meant a lot to him. We see his wives and
00:42his lovers throughout the exhibition. We see a reflection of his emotions, his experiences,
00:51the artists who inspired him. So we learn a lot about Picasso through his art, and particularly,
00:56I think, through his prints. I think through his printmaking, Picasso was able to tell
01:01stories and to really explore a subject or theme. He often made prints in series or in
01:06groups, or he would make a variation of an image, and it really allowed him to really
01:11deeply explore an idea, and I think that was perhaps something he couldn't do necessarily
01:17as quickly in painting. He liked the fact that he could work quickly, and he could keep
01:22moving and keep changing and exploring.
