00:00A PKR senator has rejected employing meritocracy in a strict manner in Sarawak after the state
00:08decided to do away with admission quotas at the five state-owned universities.
00:14Senator Abun Sui Aniet said a strict approach towards meritocracy would not work due to
00:19the imbalanced distribution of wealth across the state, Dayat Veli reported.
00:25He said rural folks still lacked access to basic infrastructure like clean water supply,
00:30electricity, the internet and roads, putting them on an unequal footing compared with their
00:36urban counterparts.
00:38Abun said targeted affirmative action was still needed under the state's 2025 budget
00:43to uplift such communities and pave the way for a more balanced economic landscape.
00:50He added that a comprehensive policy overhaul was needed to ensure sustainable growth and
00:55to provide rural population support to thrive alongside urban areas.
01:01Last Saturday, Sarawak Deputy Education, Innovation and Talent Development Minister Dr Anwar Rapai
01:07said admission into five state-owned universities will be based solely on meritocracy to pick
01:12the best of the best.
01:15The five universities are the Swinburne University of Technology Sarawak Campus, Curtin University
01:20Malaysia, University of Technology Sarawak, ICATS University College and Centre for Technology
01:26Excellence Sarawak.
