00:00Now, since the 1980s, games have been centred around collecting, well, collectibles.
00:05Whether it's Pac-Man gobbling up pellets, or Mario gathering power stars, many games
00:09can only be completed by obtaining a required amount of baubles, trinkets, or jewels.
00:14Hello.
00:15But that doesn't mean that they haven't gone absolutely crazy from time to time.
00:19And some of these collect-a-thons really do feel like that.
00:23So let's take a look at them today, as I'm Jules, this is WhatCulture.com, and these
00:26are the 10 video games with the most collectibles.
00:2910.
00:30GTA V, 404
00:32Grand Theft Auto V was praised upon its release, not just for its fluid gameplay, interactivity,
00:37and in-depth story, but also for its gargantuan size.
00:41The map of Los Santos is an overwhelming 49 square miles, making it seven times larger
00:46than GTA IV's Liberty City.
00:48With so many missions and side quests, GTA V was guaranteed to keep players entertained
00:53for quite some time.
00:54But for completionists, it's going to take a lot longer, since this rock-steady sequel
00:58contains over 400 collectibles.
01:01And you can't just walk around and talk to everyone to find them all.
01:03You need to drive, fly, cycle, and swim through every place imaginable in order to find all
01:08of the spaceship parts, letter scraps, epsilon tracks, hidden packages, sub-parts, photos,
01:13monkey mosaics, and nuclear waste barrels.
01:15And because of the staggering size of the map, finding everything seems like a herculean
01:19task.
01:20There are many people who love GTA V to death, and have played it for years, and have still
01:23never obtained everything this game has to offer.
01:269.
01:27Marvel's Spider-Man 511
01:30In Insomniac's award-winning game Marvel's Spider-Man, the quipping wall-crawler is tasked
01:34with traversing around Manhattan to stop the evil schemes of villains like Kingpin, Mr.
01:38Negative Tombstone, and Shocker.
01:41But webbing around the city is so much frickin' fun, that there are times that you just want
01:45to get away from the story to explore.
01:47And while you're thwipping about, you'll be sure to procure one of the hundreds of collectibles
01:50including J. Jonah Jameson's archives, backpacks, and Daily Bugle newspapers.
01:55The most common collectibles in this game are the tokens.
01:58This 2018 action-adventurer boasts 259 tokens, and you're going to have to acquire every
02:03single one of them in order to unlock all of those juicy upgrades, wacky gadgets, and
02:08alternate costumes.
02:09You can collect different types of tokens by performing certain tasks, like taking pictures
02:13of landmarks, stopping crimes, destroying enemy bases, completing challenges, winning
02:17lab minigames, and so forth.
02:19But that's not all.
02:20If you include the DLC, The City That Never Sleeps, there's another 24 archives and 12
02:25recordings to find as well, bringing the grand total of collectibles in Marvel's Spider-Man
02:29to 511.
02:308.
02:32Batman Arkham Knight – 516
02:35The Batman Arkham series has become famous for its gameplay, but infamous for its time-consuming
02:40side missions, especially the Riddler Trophies.
02:43In Batman Arkham Knight, you can attain these prizes by achieving missions within a time
02:46limit, disabling traps, using gadgets, or through timed races in the Batmobile.
02:51And some of these trophies are so painstaking to acquire that it's nightmarish to earn
02:54all 243 of them.
02:56But guess what?
02:57If you get them all, you're not even half finished.
03:00Upon completing the game, you'll unlock New Story Plus, which allows you to replay
03:04the game with all of the experience, gadgets, and abilities from your previous playthrough.
03:09And you will need to beat every single mission and find every Riddler Trophy all over again
03:13in order to achieve 200% completion.
03:16And that was everything the game had to offer, right?
03:18Well true, up until the Season of Infamy DLC was added in.
03:22Although there are several DLCs, the 30 items found in the Season of Infamy side mission
03:26are the only ones considered official collectibles, since obtaining them affects your completion
03:30rating.
03:31If the player finds everything in the Story Mode, New Story Plus, and Season of Infamy,
03:35it will bring their completion rating to a mathematically impossible 240%.
03:407.
03:42Crash Bandicoot 4 – It's About Time – 557
03:46That wasn't long after Crash Bandicoot It's About Time was released that players said
03:50that they'd finished the game.
03:52But for completionists, they looked at them, laughed, and said, oh you ain't seen nothing
03:55yet.
03:56You see, the most common collectibles in the franchise are gems, which are usually obtained
04:00after breaking every crate in a level.
04:02Even though each entry in the original trilogy only had a few dozen gems each, this was still
04:06a pretty arduous task.
04:08But Crash 4 takes the cake, or Aussie equivalent, because instead of each level having one gem,
04:12there are now between 6 to 12 which can be obtained by achieving certain requirements.
04:17But even after you find all 228 gems, you are still not done.
04:21You'll have to do it all over again in the inverted mode, bringing you up to 456 gems.
04:26With 4 more hidden gems, that brings it to the grand total of 460.
04:30But remember, that's only the gems.
04:32There are also 21 tapes hidden throughout the game as well, and on top of that, you'll
04:36need to collect 38 Perfect Relics and 38 Platinum Relics in Time Trials mode.
04:41Anyone who thought the original trilogy had a lot of collectibles had no idea what Crash
04:454 had in store for them.
04:476.
04:48Assassin's Creed IV Black Flag – 557
04:52Assassin's Creed IV Black Flag's main campaign is composed of 42 missions, which
04:56takes about 10 hours to complete.
04:58But while you sail the seas and infiltrate hideouts, you'll also have to rummage through
05:02every nook and cranny to find the plethora of Templar keys, manuscripts, letters in bottles,
05:06maps, and naval contracts.
05:08But what really keeps players busy in this swashbuckling adventure is collecting the
05:12200 treasure chests and 200 animus fragments.
05:15Now it's not the quantity of these trinkets that's the problem, it's their locations.
05:19Many of these valuables are buried underwater.
05:21And we all know how much the video game community loves water-based levels, right?
05:25Navigating through shipwrecks and dodging Great Whites, while seeking out every chest
05:29through murky waters, takes forever.
05:31And what's worse is that you always have a time restraint, since you can only hold
05:34your breath for so long.
05:35More often than not, you'll be within arm's length of attaining a rare item, only to drown
05:40and lose everything.
05:415.
05:42Banjo-Kazooie, almost 1,169
05:46After Super Mario 64 was praised for focusing on exploration by having an open world rather
05:51than a linear structure, it wasn't long before other platformers followed suit.
05:55And what's the easiest way to encourage players to explore?
05:57By filling the levels with stuff.
05:59Only two years after Super Mario 64 was released, Rare created their own little 3D platformer,
06:04Banjo-Kazooie.
06:05However, Rare raised the bar exponentially in terms of collectibles.
06:09If you thought that grabbing 120 Power Stars in Super Mario 64 sounded daunting, Banjo-Kazooie
06:14has nearly 10 times more to attain.
06:16The colourful and cartoony adventure game was groundbreaking upon its release, since
06:20nobody had seen a platformer with so much content at the time.
06:23You need to find jiggies to open up new worlds, musical notes to access areas of Gruntilda's
06:28base, and honeycombs to boost your health bar.
06:30And the only way to find all 1,169 collectibles was to search absolutely everywhere.
06:37Now, there are some games that shove a ton of obtainables in an obvious attempt to stretch
06:40out their gameplay.
06:41Thankfully, Banjo-Kazooie found the right balance, so it never stopped being fun seeking
06:45out hidden items, even after completing the main campaign.
06:484.
06:49Breath of the Wild – Over 1,200
06:53Since the first Legend of Zelda, the beloved franchise has been filled to the brim with
06:56side quests and collectibles.
06:58And when Nintendo promised that Breath of the Wild would be the largest Legend of Zelda
07:02game by far, gamers knew that it would be littered with more content than any rational
07:06player would be able to find.
07:08And not only does Breath of the Wild have a gigantic campaign, it has dozens of helmets,
07:12armors, trousers, and horse accessories to find.
07:14The game also has 120 mini-dungeons which reward the player with a spirit orb upon completion,
07:19and these orbs are needed to maximise Link's health and stamina.
07:23However, the real completionist challenge is the Korok Seeds.
07:26If you bring enough of these seeds to a Korok named Hetsu, he'll give you pouches for
07:29more slots, allowing you to hold more weapons, shields, and bows.
07:33And because there is a punishing 900 seeds scattered across Hyrule, only the most hardcore
07:37players have ever found them all.
07:39But surely the game rewards you if you grab every seed, right?
07:41Oh yes it does, because you get a giant pile of golden poo.
07:45Totally worth it, right?
07:473.
07:48Super Smash Bros. – Over 1,400
07:51Because Super Smash Bros. Ultimate announced that every single playable character in the
07:54franchise would return, the hype for the sequel was monumental.
07:58And even though these expectations were unrealistically high, Ultimate managed to exceed them all.
08:03Although fans were exhilarated the moment the game was officially announced, completionists
08:07were a little worried.
08:08Because since Super Smash Bros. Melee, every entry in the series has had a ton of items
08:12to seek out.
08:13Upon Ultimate's release, there were 1,297 collectibles, which were called Spirits.
08:18Equipping Spirits to a character grants them special abilities during battle, like stronger
08:22kicks, faster recovery, immunity to electrical attacks, etc.
08:25Spirits can be bought when in challenges, or acquired in Classic and Adventure mode.
08:29If 1,297 collectibles sounds like a lot, well, that's not all, because new Spirits
08:33were added upon every update.
08:35After Alex and Steve were introduced as playable characters via DLC, another 11 Minecraft-based
08:40Spirits were inserted into the game.
08:42And that means that we're at over 1,400 collectibles.
08:46Yeesh.
08:472.
08:48Super Mario Odyssey – 1,999
08:51In most of Super Mario's 3D outings, the gravity-defying plumber has to leap between
08:55worlds in order to collect 120 Power Stars.
08:59But in Super Mario Odyssey, Nintendo's mascot needed to obtain a staggering 999 Power Moons.
09:04Technically, there's 836, but you can purchase another 163 Power Moons to bring you up to
09:09999.
09:10But even though you only need 124 to beat the game, Mario Odyssey is just too fun to
09:15stop once you've acquired the bare minimum.
09:17You want to explore every kingdom to seize as many Moons as possible.
09:21Although the Power Moons are the primary collectible, they're not the only one.
09:24Each level houses between 50 to 100 Purple Coins, which serve as currency for purchasing
09:29hats and suits.
09:30If you want to unlock all 82 pieces of clothing, you'll have to find 1,000 Purple Coins.
09:34Technically, the clothes you purchase are considered unlockables rather than collectibles.
09:39But even if they don't serve much purpose, you'll be driven to unlock every single
09:42one of them.
09:43Because, I mean, who doesn't want to play as a caveman Mario, or triple somersault around
09:46a city as a mustachioed skeleton or battle Bowser in a tuxedo?
09:50Come on.
09:511.
09:52Donkey Kong 64 3,821
09:57In the year 2000, Donkey Kong 64 achieved the Guinness World Record for the most collectibles
10:01in a video game, with a grand total of 3,821.
10:06And it's maintained this record, which is a remarkable achievement considering so many
10:09modern games are padded out with tons of items.
10:12So how come DK's first 3D outing has so many things to obtain?
10:16Well, early 3D platformers popularised the concept of collecting a large number of objects
10:20to obtain an important collectible.
10:22And DK64 follows a similar formula, since the tie-wearing ape can collect up to 100
10:27bananas per level.
10:28However, you play as 5 characters, meaning you can collect a maximum of 500 of this fruit
10:33per world.
10:34And that's just the bananas.
10:35You also have to collect 40 blueprints, 40 banana medals, 20 banana fairies, 8 keys,
10:3910 battle crowns, 201 gold bananas, a Nintendo coin, and a Rareware coin in each area.
10:46And considering that Donkey Kong 64 has nearly double the amount of collectibles to the runner
10:50up, it's safe to say that it will hold onto this record for a long old time.
10:53And there we go my friends, those were 10 video games with the most collectibles.
10:56I hope that you enjoyed that, and please let me know what you thought about it down in
10:59the comments section below.
