00:08Prior to this, many universities across England were rallying together requesting for government support,
00:13after many are struggling financially.
00:15While the cost of living increased, tuition fees have been capped since 2017.
00:19For many universities, including Sunderland, the higher fees are a cash injection to assist with their most immediate financial challenges.
00:26Sunderland University has struggled to keep things afloat, with reports of potential redundancies and budget cuts in the previous months.
00:32So where does this leave Sunderland University now?
00:34In reaction to the news of the increase, Sir David Bell, Vice-Chancellor and Chief Executive of the Sunderland University, said
00:40While this announcement by the Education Secretary is a positive development, it cannot and is not intended to shape the long-term direction of the higher education sector.
00:49A substantial rethink of how the system works for students, universities and society as a whole is now needed
00:55and I hope a more significant review will be announced in the next few months.
