00:00Now, back to Stiney and Gurum on 95.7 The Game.
00:14All right, Niners win 23-20.
00:17Jake Moody at the buzzer.
00:19What's up, gents?
00:20Willard and Dibbs in the house.
00:21Yeah.
00:22It's a crossover.
00:23Welcome back.
00:24Yeah, good to see you.
00:25Good to meet you.
00:26Appreciate it.
00:27Like before we do...
00:28Oh, go ahead.
00:30In football, it's at the gun because they used to fire a gun.
00:33There's no buzzer in football, so if you want to be accurate and welcome home, welcome back,
00:39it's at the gun.
00:40Coming up in five minutes, I defend you, but right now I correct you.
00:43Okay.
00:44It's at the gun.
00:45And before we go knee-deep into football, I just wanted to say that whoever the hell
00:50you were on the phone in Washington was my favorite version of you that I've ever met
00:56in my entire life.
00:58Dude, look at how mad Guru is right now.
01:00Oh, boy.
01:01The fact that you flew back east and called the pregame show and within moments of me
01:07just being like, hey, what do you think people out there are thinking of Jordan Poole?
01:12Hey, Sweden.
01:13The fact that within three seconds, it occurred to you to just be like, I'm just going to
01:18start walking around in the street and talking to people.
01:20So great.
01:21Not on air, though.
01:22On air.
01:23On air.
01:24Live on air.
01:25Hey, you.
01:26Hey, you.
01:27What do you think of Jordan?
01:28You didn't tell us that part early.
01:29Oh, yeah.
01:30I gave him everything I had.
01:31The Odyssey app.
01:32All you have to do is tune in.
01:34I'm addicted to that version of Steinie.
01:36This man.
01:37Oh, I'm on the search.
01:38This man was waiting for his daughter and her fiance to come back from their apartment.
01:44And so he had time to kill.
01:46And we had questions about Jordan Poole and Steinie said, you know what?
01:49Let me be man on the street.
01:50And so he went out.
01:51He's like, these people look Swedish.
01:52Hey, what do you think about Jordan Poole?
01:55And he's like, well, they went, yeah, yeah.
01:59He asked about five different groups and then he became self-aware and he shut it down.
02:03But for four minutes, he was the best possible version of Matt.
02:08We got unprompted.
02:09No, we didn't ask him to do that.
02:11Dude.
02:12Amazing.
02:13Our show thread got a text saying, hey, I'll pop on Evan and I doing the show.
02:18And we.
02:19Well, that was the next day.
02:20We promoted.
02:21Yes.
02:22The next day.
02:23And we're like, he's coming on.
02:25He's like, I'm going to be there with you guys on a site.
02:26Well, no, he.
02:27Look, I was shamed.
02:28He stood us up.
02:29He's good.
02:30Yeah.
02:31He gave us everything he had and then he had nothing left.
02:35Yeah.
02:36Wow.
02:37So pretty accurate.
02:38Yeah.
02:39You know what I mean?
02:40It's like there's no load management with this guy.
02:41No.
02:42I got to find the audio.
02:43Going to talk to people on the street, just like, oh, he was a social butterfly.
02:52And you had a pepperoni pizza in your hand while this was happening.
02:55No, no.
02:56He hadn't.
02:57It was waiting for me.
02:58And so it was waiting.
02:59Oh, oh, he put his pizza on hold for us.
03:02That's wow.
03:03And the listeners.
03:04Yeah.
03:05Yeah.
03:06Now we can get to it.
03:07It was pretty great.
03:08I've never done a show where you feel like what you've meant to say gets misconstrued
03:12for what you say.
03:13I've never done a show where that's not the case.
03:16Listen, I had to fight Evan and Stani.
03:18Yesterday's game was excited as hell.
03:20That's what I heard from 10 to 2.
03:21I needed a chef.
03:22Oh, that's the best.
03:23It's a water.
03:24It's a sparkly water.
03:25He tries to pass it off like he's some sort of tough guy.
03:26Why?
03:27It's annoying.
03:28I'm not passing anything off as anything.
03:29I'm simply opening a beverage.
03:30Why do you do it in the mic?
03:31Because it's a sound that people enjoy.
03:32It's a sound that people enjoy when it's an alcoholic beverage.
03:33It's just a sound.
03:34And then they can interpret it to mean whatever they want to them.
03:35Stani, they missed you, baby.
03:36It's a sound.
03:37It's a sound.
03:38It's a sound.
03:39It's a sound.

06:41It's a sound.
06:42It's a sound.
06:43It's a sound.
06:44It's a sound.
06:45McCaffrey in the last three quarters was great.
06:49Ricky Pearsall is real.
06:50He's real.
06:51And, you know, McCaffrey's healthy, so all the things that we can, like, nitpick for
06:56me feels more like a Tuesday or a Wednesday, but I get it.
06:59You know, you're mad.
07:00But they easily, Willard could have lost that game.
07:03But they didn't.
07:04Right.
07:05But that's how I guess I live life is Norm taught me, yeah, go enjoy it, euphoria, but
07:10if we really want to put this under the microscope, you are three, four yards away from letting
07:15a team that had no business in the game, but because you don't put them away.
07:19OK, girl.
07:20So first, the Dibbs and I are not going to just blue sky this all day since we're here
07:24in this conversation.
07:27And I unfortunately got to hear very little of your show today, which I hate when that
07:31happens.
07:32But the very little that I did here, I think it might have been my favorite caller I've
07:35ever heard called this radio station.
07:37I'm trying to reach, you know, to know a guy who went off on the idea of an embarrassing
07:44win.
07:46Whoever you are, bless you.
07:49I would like to send you, I don't know, a free hat or something like, my God.
07:55And this caller, I forget his name, but he was great, though.
07:59He's like, these two words should never go next to each other.
08:03For instance, the Chiefs are nine and oh, except for their five embarrassing losses
08:07that they have, including the most embarrassing of them all, which was yesterday.
08:12And when Patrick Mahomes is running around the field, looking like you at your son's
08:16basketball game, he's running.
08:19He did not look embarrassed.
08:21They only scored 16 points at home, and they're the Chiefs with their fancy new wide receiver
08:28DeAndre Hopkins.
08:30Were they embarrassed?
08:31No.
08:32So like, there's plenty.
08:34And that caller was responding to an earlier caller who had talked about the embarrassing
08:37nature.
08:38There's no such thing as an embarrassing win.
08:40Agreed.
08:41There's a lot of embarrassing things that happened within the win, and we will get to
08:44that.
08:45You know, from Debo to Tabor to Nick Bosa or whatever, but there's no, like, what an
08:51odd thing that we've arrived to where we're holding the 49ers to a standard that I would
08:57argue no other NFL team is being held to right now.
09:00Which is that, like, not only do you have to win, but.
09:04That doesn't help me after four hours of the show.
09:06No, I'm saying to Willard, what he just said.
09:09I said to you, and I know it's wrong.
09:11But now you're coming around.
09:12No, I'm saying I'm holding them to last year's standard.
09:15I don't even.
09:17Or the standard they've created, Will.
09:19Four straight trips to the NFC Championship game, a Super Bowl I feel like you should
09:24have won.
09:25But like, even that caller pointed out that through nine games last year they were 6-3.
09:30Now they're 5-4.
09:32They've been 3-5 before.
09:35Like we're just here.
09:36We're in this moment.
09:38They haven't not made the Super Bowl yet.
09:41I know we don't think they're going to go.
09:43But you don't know.
09:44Yeah.
09:45Like.
09:46Yeah.
09:47They won.
09:48That's the most important.
09:49Two words.
09:50And you can look at yesterday and you can project it out and say, is that good enough
09:53to beat Detroit?
09:54No.
09:55Green Bay?
09:56No.
09:57Buffalo?
09:58Probably not.
09:59Miami?
10:00Maybe.
10:01You can play that game.
10:02But yesterday, that, whatever that was, was good enough to beat Tampa.
10:04And Brock threw for 360.
10:06Man, he was.
10:08And, you know, the red zone is an issue.
10:09The defense was really good for the most part.
10:11They gave up a couple of long drives.
10:13Damn near won you the game by keeping them from scoring.
10:16And the special teams, again, let the other team back in the game.
10:19So if you want to look at the problems, we can do that.
10:22But for me, at the end of it, NFL games are hard to win.
10:26And you won one on the road with a 10 a.m. start.
10:29I know you were coming off a bye, but 10 a.m. games for West Coast teams, no matter what,
10:33is very difficult.
10:35And you should have won that game 37-20.
10:37And that's what that's.
10:38But you didn't.
10:39But you still won.
10:40And, you know, we look at the Houston game.
10:41I'm sorry, Stiney, where, you know, the Rockets and the Warriors drew up by 31.
10:46And if you would have blown that game.
10:47Totally different.
10:48Oh, my God.
10:49But you ended up winning it.
10:50You needed overtime.
10:51But you won it.
10:52And even last night against OKC, where that thing got closer than it should have.
10:56But you still won.
10:58You're listening to 95.7 The Game KGMZ FM at HD1 San Francisco, always live on the free
11:03Odyssey app, Twitch and YouTube, powered by First NorCal Credit Union.
11:08What'd you think of Debo Samuel?
11:11This is the rat on the table.
11:13Everybody's entitled to their opinion, though.
11:16Sure.
11:17So first off, happens all the time.
11:20Not that big of a deal.
11:22Second of all, I don't buy for a second that all he said to him was lock in.
11:26He said something much meaner than that, for sure.
11:29But that happens.
11:30It's super, super emotional.
11:32Third thing, yes, NFL players do look at kickers differently.
11:37They do not look at them as full level human beings.
11:40And that's not OK.
11:41But that's just the way that it is.
11:43But the one thing that I will say that bothers me about it is I hear athletes often do the
11:50opposite of what they're now saying is OK.
11:54Here's what I mean by that.
11:55How many times and I bet everyone in this room has experienced it as a media member.
12:00How many times have you had an athlete say to you, you can't do what we do.
12:05So why do you get to have an opinion here?
12:09Why do you have these microphones?
12:11You don't know what we go through.
12:15Well, Debo, you have no idea how to kick a 49 yard field goal.
12:20You can't kick a 49 yard field goal.
12:23You have the slightest idea what that is.
12:27So again, not the end of the world emotions.
12:31It happens.
12:32All of that stuff.
12:34But I don't ever want to hear Debo and Debo has been one of these people before.
12:38Do the whole like y'all don't know what you're talking about because you've never been there
12:42before.
12:43So you shouldn't get a say.
12:46Jake Moody gets to do that.
12:47You have no clue what it's like to be the kicker.
12:51And it's obviously not easy or everybody would just make all the kicks.
12:55And the other part of it for me is if you're a teammate and you know that your teammate
13:00is struggling and it probably is mental.
13:03The best way to bring him around is not to go over there and confront him with words
13:07that make him feel, I don't know, defensive and have his long snapper have to step in
13:12and say, whoa.
13:13And then you throw up not a punch, but you throw an open hand at your long snapper trying
13:18to get to the kicker.
13:21And I get you're frustrated, but, you know, take out your frustration in a different way.
13:25And if you're a leader and Debo's a leader, he's the boombox guy.
13:28The best way to lead in that moment would be to throw an arm around him and say, you
13:32know what, Jake, we might need you a little bit later, even though you've missed three
13:37and you've made two.
13:38You know what?
13:39You know what, Moody?
13:40We might need you here in about 12 minutes.
13:42So hang in there, big guy.
13:43It'll be better days ahead.
13:45The only argument there, I guess, would be some people will say, well, it did work.
13:49I mean, yeah, that's why he made the kick.
13:52I don't know why he made the kick.
13:54He made the kick because he's a good kicker.
13:56I would say this.
13:57I have no idea what makes Jake Moody respond in terms of mental coaching, because you could
14:03argue that your way would be better or Debo's way would be better.
14:07I don't know.
14:08I don't know.
14:09Clearly, Tabor Pepper didn't think so, and he knows Jake Moody probably better than Debo
14:14Samuel does.
14:15I'm not like, I'm not disagreeing with anything you just said.
14:19I just, I know different people respond to different forms of coaching.
14:23Some like loud and in the face.
14:24Some want to be left alone.
14:26All of that stuff.
14:27I'm just sort of pointing out, I don't really like this idea that I hear from a lot of football
14:33players, which is, you're not really a football player, and therefore, which may be true,
14:41but that you don't get to act like what they do is easy or just inconsequential or whatever.
14:49It's not.
14:50It's not easy.
14:52Those three guys, the punter, the long snapper, the holder, who is the punter, and the kicker,
14:58they are an island.
15:00When they practice, they practice alone.
15:02When they do their thing, they do it just those three.
15:04The long snapper does nothing but long snap.
15:07The punter punts, and the punter holds, and the kicker kicks.
15:10That's it.
15:11You're a three-man unit.
15:12It's a little bit like a bullpen, although the bullpen is still kind of a part of the
15:15overall pitching staff, but it used to be where your bullpen, your four or five guys,
15:22your setup guys, your long man, your closer, they were just their own little group.
15:27You had your five starters, and you had your five or six bullpen guys.
15:31It was just different, but in a football team, those three guys, they're isolated.
15:35They don't do anything else other than snap, hold, and kick.
15:41I just didn't like the timing of it right after a miss.
15:45That's the only thing that I didn't get, because you've got to give them a minute after
15:50he just missed a big kick, and it was the third one he missed.
15:54I don't know how big of a deal it is in the grand scheme of things, but hey, they won
16:0023-20, and clearly you guys felt as though Guru was being too hard on the 49ers.
16:05That's what it sounded like.
16:08When you get to a Monday, it's either a victory Monday or it's a defeat Monday.
16:14I think we can look at other things in a broader standpoint, a broader perspective,
16:19and say, okay, what are we doing here?
16:22The offense, the red zone, still a problem.
16:24The defense, the pass rush, not great.
16:28Nick Bosa, I don't know, tackle a quarterback?
16:31Thank God they won for that, Willard.
16:34He was awful yesterday, but let's just say it.
16:37He was awful.
16:38He got one sack, and I thought on just about every other play, he was terrible.
16:42I think awful's pretty hard, but-
16:43I don't.
16:44I don't want this.
16:45You're basing that on what he makes, so like was-
16:48What else should it be?
16:49No, I'm really not.
16:50Was Okawanu awful?
16:51Well, hold on a second.
16:52He's not the highest paid defensive player in the game.
16:53That's what I'm saying.
16:54But that's not the only-
16:55He's basing it on his payroll.
16:59No, I'm also basing it on who he is and what he's achieved in the past.
17:03He's Nick Bosa, so it's not just about the money.
17:07It's about the fact that you are and have proven to be one of the best pass rushers
17:12in the game.
17:13Man.
17:14Like if we're going to-
17:15This is no-
17:16To me, it's no different than Jake Moody.
17:17Dude, you're better than that.
17:20Don't miss three kicks in one game.
17:22You're better than that.
17:23And Nick Bosa, you had almost zero pressures in the game.
17:26You had one sack.
17:27That was great.
17:28Bucky Irving shredded you.
17:30And a man.
17:31Shedded you like you were a feather in really important points, and then, I mean, the poetry
17:38of Baker Mayfield.
17:40Baker.
17:41Baker.
17:42Who?
17:43Who's laughing now?
17:44Oh, you Ohio State.
17:45A quarterback.
17:46That was-
17:47That was a great play.
17:48A quarterback stiff-armed you and took you for a ring around the Rosie to keep a game
17:53alive.
17:54I call it the squared answer, but yeah.
17:55You're supposed to be one of the fiercest pass rushers in the game.
17:59That was embarrassing.
18:00Come on, Dibbs.
18:01That was embarrassing.
18:02At some point, you have to tip the cap to another player.
18:07Another highly regarded player who made a play.
18:09You can do both.
18:10You can do both.
18:11Yeah.
18:13I can give Baker credit and still say what I said.
18:16Nick Bosa was terrible.
18:17You can say whatever you want to say.
18:18He was terrible in that game.
18:20In that moment, Baker Mayfield made a play that was Mahomesian.
18:24He was allowed to make a play because of the passiveness from the Dragon.
18:28He grabbed him.
18:29He didn't-
18:30But he had-
18:31Hey, let's go for a walk.
18:32What are we doing?
18:33Grab him!
18:34I mean, it was-
18:35Yeah, pull him down, Bosa!
18:36Thank God they won that game, because that play was something I don't think we all-
18:42I think we can split the difference here.
18:45I'm with you.
18:46There's no such thing as an embarrassing win, but we can talk about-
18:50Of course.
18:51How frustrating-
18:52That was your tweet.
18:54That's the one I was going to break out on.
18:55I mean, the tension in watching that football game could not have been turned up higher.
19:03It was absurd.
19:05And do you all have the same thing happen to you when they go up 10-0?
19:09Every time!
19:10Every time!
19:11I'm just wondering about it.
19:12They go up 10-0, and I'm like, here we go!
19:15Watch this.
19:16Air out of the balloon every time.
19:20Why?
19:21Because they're underachieving.
19:24Constantly underachieving.
19:25Well, and your guy, your guy, Kyle Shanahan, again, at the end of a half, he refuses to
19:32manage the clock in an aggressive fashion.
19:34Can you explain this one to me?
19:35Because I heard him talk about it this morning.
19:36Yeah.
19:37We had it on the vine.
19:38They got the ball back with eight seconds or something.
19:41Not in the first half.
19:42Yes.
19:43Look at the drive chart.
19:44You can make a case.
19:45Well, there was a drive.
19:46I literally looked at it this morning.
19:47There was a drive.
19:48There was a drive.
19:49Then they gave it back.
19:50They gave it back.
19:51And then they got it back.
19:52And then the Bucs had a drive.
19:53Yeah, but-
19:54Go ahead!
19:55Show me a clipboard.
19:56I looked at the end.
19:57It's the second.
19:58It's the second.
19:59It's the second.
20:00It was the previous drive.
20:01That's what I'm asking you.
20:02Yes.
20:03And they got it back with a minute eight to go.
20:04So what was wrong with that?
20:05They missed a field goal.
20:06Pass to Juwan Jennings.
20:07No timeout.
20:08And you had timeouts to burn.
20:10So Juwan gets 30, and now you're at the 38-yard line, and you just go up there, and the clock
20:16runs.
20:17But the clock didn't become an issue.
20:18They got to fourth down.
20:19But had you used a timeout, you might have got a touchdown instead of settling for the
20:23field goal attempt.
20:24But you could have run the ball.
20:26If you use your timeout, now you've got, I don't know, a minute left, and now you have
20:29the option to run it.
20:30You don't use your timeout, and so now, first and 10 at 38, notes, you've got like 38 seconds.
20:37Now you have to pass, and they know you have to pass.
20:39If you use your timeout, you then have a threat to run the football.
20:43I agree.
20:44And you don't do that.
20:45And it's Kyle.
20:46I'm not going to disagree.
20:47I also don't.
20:48People don't run the ball when you're in the two-minute drill.
20:51You do when you have timeouts.
20:52It wasn't even working, by the way.
20:54The average three yards a carry yesterday, let's call it what it was, Christian McCaffrey's
20:58biggest plays yesterday were the passing yards.
20:59But they had five, six men on that line.
21:02They were like, you ain't beating us with the run.
21:04I honestly think that the 49ers right now, for everybody who wants Kyle to run the ball
21:09when he doesn't run the ball, that's kind of their problem, actually.
21:14Their red zone issue is that they're predictable.
21:17They run the ball on first down, and the defense is waiting for them to run the ball on first
21:22down.
21:23And then they're at second and nine, and now everybody knows what you're going to do.
21:27And you're stuck, because everyone's going to just block up the end zone, because you're
21:31in a small field.
21:32Yeah.
21:34How many timeouts did they take into half?
21:36At least one, I'd have to check.
21:39I do think, in general, I just don't understand why they wait, wait, wait, wait.
21:46They have three, not the 49ers, teams in general.
21:49Three timeouts left, a minute to go, you have a 20-yard chunk play, get it to midfield,
21:53it's a call timeout!
21:54No doubt.
21:55Call timeout right there!
21:57You still don't have two, but I do get frustrated when it's like they're trying to just be perfect.
22:03Let's get up and quick spike it, and then let's try to, like you don't get extra points
22:09for scoring without using a timeout.
22:12You know what his answer would be.
22:13I'm not, Kyle, I'm not disagreeing with that.
22:16It would be, I want to run the clock out with zero.
22:18Doesn't want to leave time.
22:21What if you do a hot knife through butter, and you go down and you score, and then there's
22:24a minute 12 left on the clock, and then Tampa Bay goes down and they score.
22:28But they got the ball with a minute eight, and Grandy was just telling me that they had
22:31all three timeouts at that point.
22:33You go 30 yards into their territory, use a timeout, it's okay, it's okay at that point
22:38to use a timeout.
22:39But the drive stalled is part of that conversation.
22:42It stalled because they had to throw it, because they had no, because they let the clock run.
22:46And you know, you and I can debate this until the cows come home, but you have all three
22:51timeouts, if you throw it and you get 30 yards, you use a timeout, now you have options.
22:56I'm not disagreeing with that.
22:57I'm not disagreeing with that.
22:58And this to me is a pattern of Kyle Shanahan going into the half where he doesn't do that.
23:03Because he doesn't want to let the, again, I'm not disagreeing with you, I'm just telling
23:07you what he has said in the past.
23:09Right.
23:10He doesn't want to leave any time on the clock.
23:11Yes.
23:12He doesn't want to leave any time on the clock.
23:13But if we go back to the 19 Super Bowl where Lynch is in the suite, timeout.
23:16But then he left the game.
23:18But he timeouted and he left time on the clock, because the Buccaneers got the ball back.
23:22And they got no points.
23:23You're right.
23:24So, and I'm sure he wasn't banking on the fact that his kicker had missed the first of
23:28his three misses.
23:29Yeah, the other part.
23:30But he just cut him out from being an injured man.
23:3149-yard field goal.
23:32Not that that's a pass.
23:33He didn't even get into a spot where it was an easier field goal.
23:36Well, something was going on with his body, so maybe that led to him missing the kicks.
23:41No.
23:42No.
23:43If you play, you drive.
23:44Exactly.
23:45You're back.
23:46You're back.
23:47Last thing for me before we go.
23:48Our guy's back.
23:49Yeah.
23:50One thing about D-Vaughn I didn't like is you're punching down.
23:51You wouldn't have done that to Trent or Warner.
23:54And nobody would have got up in your face when you drop or these jet runs don't go for
23:58nothing.
23:59Yeah.
24:01And I just felt like you were doing it because you could.
24:02So you're saying if Fred Warner misses a tackle.
24:04You ain't, D-Vaughn, you ain't saying nothing.
24:06Interesting.
24:07And that outfit he wore to the game was just hideous.
24:09Yeah.
24:10His Lord!
24:11I was going to compare D-Vaughn to another Bay Area athlete, but I'm not going to.
24:18Dream on.
24:19I'm not going to.
24:20It's a clean slate.
24:21I gotcha.
24:22It's a clean slate.
24:23On 95-7.
24:24There you go.
24:25The game.
24:26You can still do that.
