HSU secretary Gerard Hayes speaks to members in NSW Ambulance about the uniform policy, after Natasha Whiteley was reprimanded for dyeing her hair red.
Transcript
00:00Hi everybody, it's Gerard and today I want to speak to the paramedic members, particularly
00:06those in the Hunter area and particularly those around Madawi.
00:12Clearly the silly season has come earlier than expected this year.
00:15I thought there was another six weeks before Christmas, but anyway, here we are.
00:20So now we're in a position that members who have dyed their hair are subject to reprimands
00:26for doing so.
00:27Well, that's pretty interesting, isn't it?
00:29Like when you think about it, how many people in the ambulance service and everywhere else
00:34in life dye their hair?
00:36I've got a lot of mates who are probably the same age as me, they've got jet black hair.
00:41Now I think they're either very fortunate in their genetics or maybe they're using Grecian.
00:47I wonder how many other people are doing the same thing.
00:50And yet we've got a paramedic in Madawi who's now been held to account.
00:56My worry is if it starts here, where does it end?
01:00For all our members who are follically challenged, are you going to have to require to get a
01:04wig or something along those lines?
01:06But anyway, this is the ambulance service.
01:09I think it's very important to note that in their uniform policy, they talk about no skylarking
01:15and good deportment.
01:17Very important things.
01:18Anyway, let's fast forward from the 1970s to 2024.
01:23Let's hope that the ambulance service today can actually have a review of that policy.
01:28Now, my hair is blue.
01:30Guess what?
01:31I can still do work.
01:33I can still meet with the Premier should I need to do so.
01:36I don't think the colour of my hair is going to change the fight that I've got in me.
01:41The other important thing is that everybody must know.
01:45It doesn't matter what colour your hair is, when you turn up and you look after that patient,
01:50that patient is going to be so thankful because you turned up, because you're a professional
01:55and you're outstanding at your job.
01:57So have a great, colourful hair day, everybody.
02:01Hopefully the ambulance service sees sense before Santa comes.
02:05See you later.
02:06Bye.
