00:04 >> Ram, Ram, can I have this?
00:08 >> It's a big moment.
00:10 The John Lewis ad is sort of peak Christmas advertising season.
00:14 And it was a big moment for the brand because it's a new agency in place,
00:18 making the ad for the first time.
00:21 So there was a lot of kind of interest from the industry as to,
00:25 are the new agency, it's such and such, the team behind it,
00:29 are they gonna be able to pull it off?
00:30 Are they gonna make a great ad?
00:32 And to be fair, I think they have.
00:34 >> This year, there's expected to be a nearly 5% increase on the spend from last
00:39 year's record 9 billion pounds spent on advertising over the Christmas period
00:43 in the UK, according to data from the Advertising Association.
00:47 It's got the ability to make us laugh, cry, and dig in our pockets.
00:52 But why do they stick in our minds so much?
00:54 >> The heart of it is really emotionally powerful kind of storytelling and
00:58 connection through that.
01:00 And they might use humor, they might use a sort of empathy,
01:03 they might make you feel a bit emotional.
01:06 But they do that.
01:08 But then you think about some of the great classic Christmas ads.
01:11 The one that performs year after year is Coca-Cola's The Holidays Are Coming.
01:17 And really, one of the main reasons that performs so well is that music.
01:23 People hear the music and it evokes memories because they've been running that
01:27 since 1995.
01:29 So it evokes memories for you of your child and hearing that.
01:33 And it's a signal that they're right, Christmas is coming.
01:37 >> Some of the industry's giants are gearing up for blockbuster ads this year.
01:41 Boots, Aldi, and M&S, and John Lewis have already unveiled their campaigns.
01:45 Sainsbury's has 80s legend Rick Astley starring in their Christmas ad.
01:49 And Asda has enlisted the beloved Michael Bublé for theirs.
01:52 >> It's the most competitive time of the year for those companies.
01:56 They're all competing for market share, for
01:59 customers to think about them versus the competitor.
02:04 So there's an awful lot of time, energy, thinking, and
02:09 a lot of skills right from across all parts of the creative industries.
02:13 When you look at, okay, what is behind that ad then?
02:17 >> But what about the ones from years gone by that stick with us even years later?
02:21 Among the nation's favorites are Coca-Cola, Holidays Are Coming,
02:25 the Quality Street Lollipop Lady, and this one.
02:27 [MUSIC]
02:33 >> My personal favorite from yesteryear, if you like, is the Yellow Pages.
02:38 And I like that kind of just really sort of almost like innocent, sweet storytelling.
02:45 There's also Quality Street's Magic Moments, where the boy gives the Lollipop Lady
02:50 a box of Quality Street's on a snowy day when the Lollipop Lady's got a cold,
02:56 which is really cute as well.
02:58 So I mean, the history of advertising,
03:01 the history of Christmas advertising really stretches right back.
