00:14Right now I think they're still just the second best team in the East.
00:16If you look at their numbers, I mean, they are the best team in the NBA right now, but
00:20that's, of course, only 15 games.
00:22They're first in points per game, first in field goal percentage, first in three-point
00:25percentage.
00:26So they're doing a lot of things right, but they haven't really met a challenge like the
00:29Celtics yet.
00:30Nine wins from theirs are against bottom third teams, so this is a real test for them tonight
00:35to see.
00:36It's a measuring stick.
00:37But they beat the Warriors, and you lost to the Warriors, and they beat the Knicks, who
00:40the Celtics also beat.
00:41They beat, uh, who was the other team you referenced earlier?
00:43Lakers.
00:45Lakers are 9-4 out West, so they do have some good wins.
00:46It's not all bad wins.
00:47Yeah, and this is their measuring stick, though.
00:49They want to be contenders in the East.
00:50That's what Evan Mobley was talking about today at Shootaround, that they want to see,
00:54they want to prove that they're actually contenders in the East, and this is the opportunity to
00:57do it.

00:59Yahoo Sports just had one, uh, out today, and the headline was, Darius Garland is now
01:05the league's most underrated player, which, I like Cleveland a lot, and it's mostly because
01:11of Donovan Mitchell, but Jones and I were talking about this earlier, like, you look
01:13at the rest of the roster, they have, like, the two bigs who are young, and people like
01:16them, and Mobley and Allen, but isn't, if Darius Garland is really good, that makes
01:22them much more of a contender.
01:24If he's just, like, okay, then I don't know what kind of chance, where, where do you stand
01:27on him, I guess is my question, like, is he maybe the most underrated player now in
01:30the league?
01:31I think he's up there.
01:32I think last year was just such a nightmarish season for him.
01:34He broke his jaw, running into Christoph Porzingis' hip, had, like, sewed shut or whatever it
01:39was, lost a family member last year during the season as well, so it was a tough year
01:44for him, but we've seen how good he can be, especially now with Donovan Mitchell.
01:48Part of the reason that they're able to play so well now is because it's not all on Donovan
01:52Mitchell.
01:53He's okay with taking a step back, and that's opened up room for growth for other players
01:57on the team, like Evan Mobley, who's shined offensively, like Darius Garland, even a guy
02:01like Ty Jerome, who was out all last year, so we're seeing that.
02:04He just sticks threes at Ty Jerome, holy smokes.
02:07They missed him last year, and he only played two games, so you're seeing that Donovan Mitchell
02:10taking a backseat is really opening up things for the rest of this team.
02:15It seems like, and we'll see tonight, it's an NBA Cup game, so you know the Celtics are
02:20going to get up for it.
02:21So Jones is fired up.
02:22Jones is into it.
02:23I would like them to win it anyway, but I would like them to win just to keep their
02:25chances alive in the NBA Cup to advance and go to Vegas and blah, blah, blah.
02:29But they have played down to their level of competition lately.
02:32They lost that Warriors game, they went to overtime against Brooklyn, it was a win.
02:35They lost to Atlanta, they go to overtime against Toronto, another win.
02:39So it's not like they're losing all these games, but last time we talked to you last
02:43week, Terp, it's not like they're playing great basketball.
02:45Are you nervous at all about some of these Atlanta, Brooklyn-level teams, the Celtics
02:52are playing down to them and having to scramble and go to overtime?
02:55Will that cost them at any point?
02:56Yeah, I mean, we already saw it cost them last week against Atlanta in the NBA Cup game.
03:00Who knows how much they actually care about it, but when you allow 20 offensive rebounds
03:04and 20 turnovers, that's just unacceptable.
03:06It's been done like four times since the 70s.
03:08It just, it doesn't happen.
03:10So part of that is human nature, though.
03:12Even Brad Stevens talked about it in the offseason, that one opponent they're going to have this
03:16year is human nature and just not getting up for those games.
03:18And this is a game where if you can't get up for this, a 15-0 team coming into your
03:23arena right here in an NBA in-season tournament game, and who knows if they actually care
03:27about that, but more so, this is the Cavs.
03:28They are number one in the Eastern Conference right now.
03:30You are chasing them.
03:32That's the reality of it.
03:33So if they can't get up for this one, then you start to worry about it.
03:35But you look at that, those six games since the Golden State game, where people are really
03:39looking at, I mean, there's still four and two in there.
03:41So if that is your championship hangover, per se, I think you live with it.
03:45The Celtics have a rival, because I don't think it's the Cavs, but I do think the Cavs
03:49are the second-best team, and maybe this could be an Eastern Conference Finals preview.
03:53I just look at the Bucs aren't very good, the Sixers are a disaster, the Knicks, I don't
04:00think there's been enough heated rivalry games with them.
04:03Are they their own thing right now?
04:06I don't think there's anybody that could really claim being their rival.
04:08It certainly feels that way, and I don't really feel like people get up necessarily when it's
04:12the Lakers anymore either.
04:14No.
04:15I mean, LeBron is part of it.
04:16I think it's hard to have a Western Conference rival.
04:18I know Celtics, Lakers were, but that's because they met in the finals almost all the time
04:22in the 80s, or at least that was the hope every year in the 80s.
04:25But now that there's more teams, and you only play them twice, like the Warriors people
04:29are excited about, but it's still not, I don't think it's a rival.
04:30I think it's Miami right now.
04:31Oh, maybe.
04:32If you had to pick one, it would be Miami, and I think that playoff series last year
04:36would have had a lot more energy and buzz around it had Jimmy Butler been playing, because
04:40he is the face of that rivalry.
04:42Like when you think of this newfound rivalry of them, it's always involved Jimmy Butler
04:46and him running his mouth, Grant Williams getting his face and all that.
04:48So I think if Jimmy Butler played, we'd talk about that series a little bit more differently.
04:52I don't think Miami would have won.
04:53I think it probably still wouldn't win five games, but the fact that he wasn't there really
04:57took away from the shine of the series.

05:20I mean, watching last week, I can't see how you would say there's any added edge.
05:24I mean, that was one of the softest they've played all year.

05:31Like, are some teams approaching these games more, you know, like they matter more than

05:36Yeah, I think some teams are.
05:37And I think every team should.
05:38I think when your team is in a competition, you should want to win it.
05:39Like, these are the most competitive people in the world, these athletes.
05:43So I feel like they should want to win it.
05:45It's just, I don't know if there's necessarily a lot like look at the Celtics roster.
05:48They're so top heavy and they're all so financially compensated.
05:52Like they don't really need this prize money or a trip to Vegas.
05:55Like maybe they value more so the days off.
05:57So I don't know if they necessarily, it's hard to tell because I think some players
06:01do care about it.
06:02Last year when they lost Jason Tatum was upset they didn't go to Vegas.
06:05But I also think that some of them just don't care about it.
06:07Like it's just another game and they're trying to win every game, but it's not like they're
06:10changing anything they're doing to try to win this tournament.
06:14What was the Chris Stapps Porzingis update yesterday?
06:16I read it like four times and I'm like, I don't know if this is good, bad or the same,
06:21but they issued the team issued like a, like a paragraph release.
06:25And I still don't really even know what they said.

06:27So in short, he was, he was demoted to Maine, not really demoted because it was only for
06:32one practice.
06:33So he went to Maine, worked out with the, the main Celtics along Xavier Tillman, most
06:37likely because it's more of a physical practice.
06:39Like at this point of the season, once you get into these regular season, like the Celtics
06:42probably aren't practicing as physical as maybe Maine might.
06:45So they sent Xavier Tillman there with them partially because Tillman has fallen out of
06:49the rotation, get him a little more run, but also to give him some NBA level competition.
06:53But for everything that you're seeing and everything you're hearing from Chris Stapps
06:57Porzingis is he's progressing maybe even better than they thought he would.
07:01Brad Stevens said that on media day that they were a little bit surprised of how well he's
07:05progressed.
07:06He's been traveling on the team, which is something you don't always see from players.
07:10So he's been engaged.
07:11And honestly, in Brooklyn, when I was there last week, he was just so eager to get in
07:15during every time out.
07:16He was walking out to the free throw line, just mimicking his shot.
07:19Like he looked like he was ready to go.
07:20And he's really ramping up these pregame warmups where he's been getting work in before every
07:24pregame and he's moving quick.
07:26It's almost more so than what he was doing last year in the playoffs where everyone was
07:30making big deal.
07:31It was like, oh, he's in Indiana.
07:32He's working out before.
07:33It was always a big deal.
07:34I think he looks better in these now than he did then.
