00:00Horsing has made his return the other night for the Celtics and what already looked like
00:06an NBA championship caliber team showed off a whole nother gear.
00:12Justin Turpin from WEEI.com, Turp joining us here on Jones and Keefe for his weekly
00:17appearance.
00:18First of all, Turp, how we doing?
00:19Happy Thanksgiving.
00:20Happy Thanksgiving, guys.
00:21What people want to know is were you able to get out of that speeding ticket?
00:25Oh, people do want to know that, actually.
00:26Damn right I was.
00:27We were getting a lot of texts about that earlier in the week.
00:30No, it wasn't a speeding ticket.
00:31What was it?
00:32It was an improper lane change.
00:34But we are free now.
00:35We are off the hook.
00:36Nice.
00:37How about that?
00:38Free man.
00:39Innocent.
00:40What a feeling.
00:41Feels like you have some free money now.
00:42Because you probably had to put some aside thinking, like, what if I get...
00:43Now it's going to the Bozo.
00:44That's where it's going.
00:45Oh, I like that.
00:46Directly to the Bozo TD.
00:47You represented yourself.
00:48You defended yourself.
00:49You didn't know...
00:50Confident individual.
00:51I did it myself.
00:52Shirt and tie?
00:53I did.
00:54I threw on a tie.
00:55Small business, Turp.
00:57White House Turp.
00:58Yeah, White House Turp.
00:59Well, that was a suit.
01:00That was suited and booted.
01:01Full suit.
01:02Yeah.
01:03Man.
01:04That cleans up nice.
01:05I'd see him in not a suit and I'd say, you know what?
01:06Throw the book in.
01:07You're coming with us.
01:08Yeah.
01:09You're coming.
01:10And you do not have the rights to an attorney.
01:12So poor Zingas comes back the other day.
01:16You look pretty good.
01:17Where do you think the Celtics have missed him the most?
01:19Definitely on their rim protection.
01:21That's been one of the biggest issues for them is the points in the paint for opponents.
01:25You look at it, they had 11 blocks in this first game back.
01:27They hadn't had a double-digit block game all season before then.
01:31Why do you think that turned into like a team-wide thing?
01:32Because he only had two, I think.
01:33It's more so just having him back there that they're allowed to play a little bit more
01:37aggressively and they can also play different coverages because of his versatility, which
01:40is just huge for them.
01:41So you saw him make an impact there right away.
01:44And I know Clippers obviously had, I think it was still like 54 points in the paint,
01:49which isn't great, but a lot of that was from Zubac.
01:51So that's going to happen.
01:52He definitely shard that up an area that they really needed help in.
01:55You know, we were talking about this, how Brad Stevens was on the broadcast and you
01:58could tell he was annoyed every time they gave up a layup.
02:00But my kind of theory is Mazzullo's probably good with it.
02:04Like doesn't want dunks and like super easy points, but every time the opponent takes
02:08a two, I feel like Mazzullo thinks that's a win.
02:11Yeah, it depends on the type of two it is.
02:12Like some of them, they're willing to let opponents take.
02:15They're really analytical in that sense of who they're allowing, who they're willing
02:19to let take certain shots and whatnot.
02:21And I am with you because they like to take, if you want to play the two for three game,
02:25it's all about the Celtics and look at, they hit 15 threes in the first half and 12 in
02:31the second quarter alone on Monday.
02:34So if you're, you're not going to beat them by scoring twos, if they're shooting lights
02:37out like that.
02:38For our listeners who are unaware, Terps Young, how old are you Terp?
02:4122.
02:4222.
02:43You just called it a math game.
02:44Do you number crunchers?
02:46Yeah.
02:47Do you like the style of basketball, the modern day basketball?
02:52Do you enjoy that?
02:53Or are you just like, that's just basketball because you're so young?
02:54I do because I find it so fascinating the way the Celtics do it.
02:58When you have a guy like Porzingis and like everyone says the three point shots, the Celtics
03:02are taking a ruining the NBA, which I just can't disagree more.
03:05I think it's actually very entertaining in all of the top eight for the Celtics.
03:09That's Hauser, Pritchard, uh, Cornette, I'm not shooting, not going to have Tatum, Brown,
03:14White, Holiday, Pritchard, Hauser, Horford, and Porzingis.
03:17All of them are league average three point shooters or better.
03:19So it's their ability to space the floor and then you have to pick between who you're going
03:24to let shoot an open three.
03:25It's just fascinating the mind games that they play with other teams.
03:29I really do enjoy it.
03:30Are you worried at all?
03:31The NBA is going the way of baseball where now it's overanalyzed and there's too much
03:35emphasis on, cause like we all like home runs and baseball, but when everybody's swinging
03:39for a home run, you get a lot of, you know, guys who can't do it, guys who are striking
03:45out.
03:46It gets reduced to a game that becomes less watchable.
03:49We all like points.
03:50We all like home runs, but we also don't like what happened with baseball.
03:53Are you worried about that at all with the direction of the NBA?
03:56I'm not because it really starts in the defensive end for the Celtics, right?
03:59So a lot of the, back then they always wanted to see defense like you guys love defense
04:03probably.
04:04Like that's what they, not true.
04:07I really don't.
04:08Yeah.
04:09But that they start with the defensive end.
04:10So I'm not really worried about that.
04:11And they can score in different ways and going back to Porzingis, like look at in the third
04:15quarter, obviously it didn't really matter cause they had a huge lead, but the Clippers
04:18were on a 13 to two run when the Celtics needed to snap that run because their shots weren't
04:22falling.
04:23They went to Porzingis right in the post.
04:24He shot over hard in the first time for two and then got followed on the very next possession.
04:28And just like that, the offense was leveled out again.
04:30So they have different avenues to score.
04:32It's not all just three point shots and granted a lot of it is, but it's not all three point
04:37shooting.
04:38All right.
04:39Wild hypothetical.
04:40If the Celtics had prime Shaquille O'Neal, do you think Joe Missoula would teach him
04:46to shoot threes and want him to shoot threes or would he be okay with him just stuffing
04:50guys down in the paint?
04:51I think he'd be okay with them stuffing guys in the paint.
04:54Cause I feel like he'd be like, Hey Shaq at practice, why don't you step out here and
04:57see?
04:58Oh, they would definitely shoot him in practice.
04:59They would.
05:00A hundred percent.
05:01I don't know if they wouldn't the game.
05:02Cause guys like Cornette doesn't shoot him in the game, but he'll shoot them in practice.
05:05Why does Cornette not shoot three because he used to do it before he got here.
05:08He's like the opposite.
05:09Most guys maybe don't, and then they have to hear.
05:12He doesn't hear the polar opposite of Al Horford who developed a three point shot.
05:16Luke Cornette almost like lost his, he just doesn't take them anymore.
05:19He's very capable of it.
05:21Did they have time Lord shooting threes when he was here?
05:23They were working on it right before they traded.
05:24Remember the videos?
05:25No, no, no.
05:26Yeah.
05:27No, definitely not.
05:28They were, they were, they were clips of him.
05:29I do vaguely remember that.
05:30Yeah.
05:31Doing like corner threes and stuff.
05:32Doesn't that kind of answer your question?
05:33Yeah, I guess.
05:34But he wasn't as dominant as score.
05:35No, no.
05:36I mean, for sure.
05:37I mean, he's not Shaq, but just like a player like that.
05:40They're going to try to get him to turn into a guy who can stick corner threes.
05:42He made his first career three, like two weeks ago.
05:44Lord did?
05:45Time Lord.
05:46Yeah.
05:47In the corner.
05:48The Lord?
05:49Yeah.
05:50The Lord did.
05:51What do you think the plan is for Porzingis?
05:52He played 23 minutes.
05:53Obviously they won that game in a massive blowout.
05:55Is he going to sit back to backs?
05:56Is he going to have any kind of minutes or what do you think the plan is?
05:59He kind of alluded to it the other day that he was going to sit on back to backs.
06:02It's going to kind of be similar to what it was last year, but he said there's no crazy
06:05restrictions to what he's on now, but there's definitely going to be some sort of minute
06:08restrictions because you don't go from five months of recovery to just a full go.
06:12Like this is still the part of him ramping up.
06:15Like that's when he went to the G League scrimmage.
06:17They said he was part of ramping up his rehab and he's still in that process even though
06:20he's back on the court.
06:22So there's going to be some sort of minute restrictions and same like with guys like
06:25Al Horford and Drew Holiday.
06:26They're trying to lower their minutes when possible.
06:28It's going to be the same thing with Porzingis.
06:30Do they need Porzingis to repeat?
06:32They didn't need him last year.
06:33Do they need him to do it this year?
06:34I do think they need him to do it.
06:36They need him.
06:37Yes, I do.
06:39He has a season ending injury in February.
06:40You're going to come in and say the Celtics can no longer win.
06:42I wouldn't say they can no longer win, but it would significantly change how I feel about
06:46it.
06:47Like look at how competitive their games have been this year.
06:49They really haven't been in another point differential still over 10, but it feels like
06:53they've been in a lot of these win ugly games.
06:55It's been a staple of this team.
06:56And then you get Kristaps Porzingis back and it's no coincidence that they have their biggest
07:01win of the season with 32 points.
07:03Like that's no coincidence.
07:04So yeah, they're going to need him more so because of the physicality teams are playing
07:08them a little bit differently and it's just so hard to repeat.
07:10So if you have a guy like that who Jason Tatum literally called a cheat code, you know, it
07:15goes a long way.
07:16They got the Bulls tonight.
07:17Then they got the Cavs in Cleveland on Sunday, which should be a good one.
07:20I'm sure Cleveland's got that one circled like a mini little revenge game.
07:24Just like a what?
07:25Two weeks after they played in the first time.
07:26Yeah.
07:27And that's a good one for the Celtics as well because you're not going to really see a lot
07:30of top tier talent in the Eastern Conference right now.
07:32We're not really seeing a lot of it.
07:34So you get a team like Cleveland that you can kind of see how your whole squad matches
07:39up against like assuming they're healthy going into that no back-to-back because they'll
07:42have a day off Saturday.
07:43So assuming you have your top six, which we haven't seen this year, it's a good test for
07:48the Celtics.
07:49Okay, check out his work Justin Turpin wei.com.
07:53Also on Twitter at Justin M. Turpin turp.
07:58Congrats on being a free man.
07:59Happy Thanksgiving and get back down the hall and we'll run the twitch.
08:04That's video.
08:05Very good.
08:06All right, Turp.
08:07We appreciate it.
