00:00In news overseas, leaders of the 20 largest economies, the G20,
00:04ended a two-day summit in Brazil with a statement supporting developing world
00:08priorities on climate change, poverty reduction and taxing billionaires.
00:12The final communique did not include strong language on Ukraine and Gaza
00:16that the United States had sought. White House Bureau Chief Patsy Whitaker-Swara
00:21is traveling with President Joe Biden and brings us this report from Rio de Janeiro.
00:25As host of the G20 gathering of the world's largest economies,
00:32Brazil focused the group on the priorities of the global south,
00:35countries generally considered as developing, plus Russia and China.
00:40Globalization has failed, said Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.
00:48In the midst of ongoing turbulence, the international community seems
00:52resigned to sailing aimlessly through hegemonic disputes.
00:56We remain adrift, as if swept along by a torrent pushing us towards tragedy.
01:01In a joint statement, the group underscored the need to slow global warming,
01:05reduce poverty and impose a global tax on billionaires.
01:09It again called for an expansion of the United Nations Security Council
01:13beyond its five current permanent members.
01:15The statement also called for a ceasefire in Gaza and Lebanon,
01:19and pathway to a two-state solution for Israel and the Palestinians,
01:23but did not mention Israel's right to defend itself,
01:26a line U.S. President Joe Biden pushes for in various global forums.
01:36As in last year's summit, G20 leaders highlighted the human suffering and
01:40economic impact of the war in Ukraine without any condemnation of Russia.
01:46The war is escalating as Ukraine begins using long-range weapons provided by the
01:50United States and Britain to strike inside Russian territory.
01:55Kyiv accuses the G20 of failing to act.
01:58Today, G20 countries, they're sitting today in Brazil.
02:06Did they say something? Nothing. Nothing strong. This is the answer.
02:12So what strategy can be if even G20 countries don't have any strong strategy?
02:19Support for Ukraine is on the minds of leaders ahead of the incoming U.S.
02:23administration of Donald Trump. President-elect Trump has criticized sending aid to Kyiv.
02:29In Biden's meeting with Lula, they underscored the urgent need to address the climate crisis,
02:34another area of uncertainty. Trump has repeatedly called climate change a hoax.
02:40Brazil ended the summit by passing the baton to South Africa, the next G20 president.
02:46Traveling with President Biden in Rio de Janeiro, Patsy Widakoswara, VOA News.
