00:21of peace.
00:26The United States Senate has rejected three resolutions introduced by Bernie Sanders to
00:30block the sale of certain weapons to Israel to continue its attacks on the Gaza Strip.
00:38The India-Caribbean Community CARICOM 2024 Summit started on November 20th in Guyana
00:44with issues that now mark the political agenda of the states participating in the meeting.
00:54Hello and welcome to From the South, my name is Belén de los Santos and from the Televisual
00:58Studios in Caracas, Venezuela, we begin with the news.
01:09Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro called to defend peace and popular sovereignty after
01:13heading the ceremony for the creation of the National Electoral Commission to elect justices
01:18of peace.
01:19The Venezuelan leader assured that the best way to safeguard the social, political and
01:23economic stability of the country is to advance in the structural goals together with the
01:29people.
01:30Likewise, Maduro emphasized that it is necessary to build a new state on the new social foundations
01:36in order to create what he called a society of equals.
01:40The President also affirmed that the election of the judges of peace in over 5,000 communal
01:46circuits next December 15th will be the main tool to exercise popular sovereignty.
01:58We have the task to build a new state, a new basis, and a new society of equality and freedom
02:08in a sovereign nation when the time of God is perfect.
02:13The time of God has arrived for the justice of peace and Venezuela is at the forefront
02:19setting an example for the peoples of the world.
02:23And during the public powers meeting at the Venezuelan National Assembly, the nation's
02:27Attorney General, Tarek William Saab, praised the idea to create justices of peace by stressing
02:33that peace was actually the most important right of the Venezuelan people.
02:38The most important human right of a nation is the right to peace because, for me, this
02:48includes everybody, even the right to life because peace grantees the right to life and
02:58the right to freedom, peace grantees the right to physical integrity.
03:06All of the individual rights are accomplished in the right to peace.
03:11So it's very beautiful that this is called peace judges.
03:18In other topics, Uruguay's presidential elections come to an end on Sunday, November 24th, and
03:24the people will finally elect a new president and vice president.
03:27The presidential candidate for the broad front, Yamandu Orsi, assured that to have the governability
03:33to promote the transformations that the country needs before a neoliberal government, as he
03:38closely has campaigned for Sunday's ballot on Wednesday.
03:42On the other hand, the presidential candidate for the National Party, Alvaro Delgado, also
03:46called on Uruguayans to think about who they would want to be in charge if there were a
03:51new crisis.
04:00We have the Senate that is ready to go out and do what we have to do to legislate, but
04:07also, and more importantly, to govern in the way that our country needs.
04:13We have the conditions to take charge of our country, and we have the conditions to continue
04:19to work on the basis of agreements, but also with a firm and determined attitude to carry
04:27out the transformations that the country needs.
04:37I feel that I am prepared, that I have the experience, which is non-transferable, but
04:42also that I am tested, and that I have a team that supports me enormously to give Uruguay
04:48guarantees in stormy waters or in calm waters, to give it direction, to give it protection,
04:55to give it security, to give it certainty, which is what Uruguayans want.
05:01Social and Trade Equatorial Unions, led by the Central de Trabajadores, have called for
05:06a national rally scheduled for November 21st against the existing crisis and its mismanagement
05:12by President Daniel Novoa.
05:13The gatherings will take place in the capital, Quito, at the building known as La Caja del
05:18Seguro, and is set to culminate in Plaza de Santo Domingo.
05:23Politicians have been summoned to express the discontent of the population with the
05:27multiple domestic crises.
05:29In addition to this, there is a severe electricity situation with long power outages of up to
05:3512 hours per day amid a security crisis as a result of the actions of the organized crime.
05:49And now we have a short break coming up, but first, remember you can join us on TikTok
05:52at Seller English, where you will find news in different formats, news updates, and much
05:57more.
06:01Stay with us.
06:22Welcome back to From the South.
06:40The United States Senate has rejected three resolutions introduced by Bernie Sanders to
06:45block the sale of certain weapons to Israel to continue its attacks on the Gaza Strip.
06:5079 senators voted against resolutions calling for a ban on the sale of tank ammunition,
06:56high explosive mortar ammunition, and the sale of kits to transform unguided bombs into
07:01precision-guided weapons.
07:04Sanders denounced that these are all weapons that have been used with devastating effects
07:08against civilians in Gaza and in Lebanon.
07:11The senator defined the humanitarian crisis in Palestine as apocalyptic, assuring that
07:16what is happening is being done with U.S. weapons and with money contributed by the
07:21government.
07:22Madam President, I would also point out that poll after poll shows that a strong majority
07:33of the American people oppose sending more weapons and military aid to fund Netanyahu's
07:41war machine.
07:43And I would also mention, interestingly enough, that according to a poll commissioned by J
07:49Street, this is a pro-Israel organization, 62% of Jewish Americans support withholding
07:59weapons shipments to Israel until Netanyahu agrees to an immediate ceasefire.
08:07And at least three Palestinian young men were killed and several injured following a 48
08:13hour siege by the Israeli forces in the occupied West Bank town of Karftan.
08:17Yenning Governor Kamal Abu Al-Rub announced on Wednesday afternoon the death of the three
08:23young men whose bodies were held by the occupying forces.
08:27Hours earlier, the Palestinian Red Crescent reported that another citizen was fatally
08:31shot down in the chest in the same town.
08:34The two-day Israeli offensive left a widespread destruction in the Yenning Governorate, including
08:41damage to water and electricity grid, attacks on civilian homes and businesses.
08:46Over 789 Palestinians have been killed by Israeli forces in the occupied West Bank since
08:53October of 2023.
09:01We continue in Palestine as following recent Israeli bombings, the Gaza Health Ministry
09:05reported a growing death toll as a result of the ongoing genocidal escalation.
09:11At least 71 people have been killed and over 176 have been injured after new Israeli attacks
09:18in the northern Gaza Strip.
09:20Following these strikes, the Gaza Health Ministry informed that the death toll from the ongoing
09:25Israeli bombings on Palestine has risen to over 44,056, while over 104,268 have been
09:36injured since the onset of the Zionist genocide.
09:39The Israeli forces continue to intensively hit refugee camps in the northern Gaza Strip
09:44targeting residential buildings and medical facilities.
09:53Two non-governmental organizations denounced this November 21st that the Israeli forces
09:59have arrested around 770 Palestinian minors in the occupied West Bank since October of
10:062023.
10:07The Prisoners' Club and the Palestinian Prisoners' Society claim that there is no data on the
10:12number of those arrested in the Gaza Strip amid numerous reports of enforced disappearances.
10:19Precisely, both NGOs stated that many minors suffered physical and psychological torture,
10:26including beatings and threats.
10:29Both institutions confirmed that they had documented cases in which the military used
10:33children as hostages to pressure a family member to surrender.
10:44And we now move on to other topics.
10:45In Niamey, the capital of Niger, over 2,000 people from three continents will celebrate
10:50the International Conference of Solidarity with the Sahel peoples.
10:54Activists, political leaders, trade union representatives and members of African social
10:59movements and communities around the world are gathering at the event to show anti-imperialist
11:05support for the people of the Sahel.
11:08Participants shared their perspective on joining forces and discussing the way forward for
11:13the people of the Sahel.
11:14The organizers used the meeting to highlight the struggle of the people of the area and
11:20inspire deeper global solidarity in the struggle for justice, dignity and economic resilience.
11:26And in other news, the Meteorological Office in Iceland notified the eruption of the volcano
11:49in the Raijans Peninsula at the southwest of the country where several volcanoes are
11:54aligned.
11:55The Icelandic Meteorological Office notified that although no infrastructures were affected,
12:01precautions are being taken due to the volcano eruption, evacuating the fishing village of
12:06Grindavík, which is located in the vicinity of the crater.
12:10Although volcanic activity had been dormant for eight centuries, it reappeared in 2021.
12:16Iceland has 33 active volcanoes, the largest number of them in Europe, and the recent eruption
12:22marked the seventh by this volcano in the present year.
12:31Also the northwestern United States remains under the effect of a powerful hurricane bomb
12:36that has already left two dead and could bring excessive and dangerous rainfall to that part
12:42of the country this November 21st.
12:44Weather services reported that flash flooding, rockslides and landslides are likely to happen.
12:50Blizzard conditions with gusty winds and 30 to 120 centimeters of snowfall at higher
12:57elevations are also possible in the mountains of Northern California.
13:02According to ABC News in CNN, in the north of Seattle, a 50-year-old woman was killed
13:09when a tree fell on a homeless campsite.
13:12In this context, another woman was also killed for a similar reason in Bellevue, east of
13:18this city.
13:24And now we have a second short break coming up, but before we invite you to visit our

14:07The India-Caribbean Community CARICOM 2024 Summit started on November 20th in Guyana
14:13with issues that today mark the political agenda of the states participating in the
14:17meeting.
14:18Attendees at the conclave, which will conclude on Sunday, are discussing strategies to achieve
14:23shared development goals, and possible collaborations are expected to emerge from the exchanges
14:29of experiences.
14:31According to the Associated Times website, the summit is focused on agriculture, healthcare,
14:37digital infrastructure, renewable energy and pharmaceuticals.
14:41Summit leaders from CARICOM countries are attending the meeting and welcomed Indian
14:45Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
14:53And in other news, the Australian government on November 21st sent to Parliament a bill
14:58to prevent children under 16 from accessing social networks such as Snapchat, TikTok,
15:04Instagram and X, among others.
15:06The regulation endorses on digital platforms, and not on parents or young people, the obligation
15:12to take reasonable measures.
15:14Let's listen.
15:15We know they can and should do better to address harms on their platforms.
15:25That's why we're making big changes to hold platforms to account for user safety.
15:31The Online Safety Amendment Social Media Minimum Age Bill 2024 will amend the Online
15:37Safety Act 2021 by introducing a minimum age of 16 to have an account on age-restricted
15:45social media platforms, protecting young Australians at a critical stage of their development.
15:51The bill puts the onus on social media platforms, not parents or young people, to take reasonable
15:57steps to ensure fundamental protections are in place.
16:01This is about protecting young people, not punishing or isolating them, and letting parents
16:07know we're in their corner when it comes to supporting their children's health and wellbeing.
16:24And we now move on to other topics.
16:26Panama hosted the Nexus Forum, which addresses the education and ethical universality of
16:32the Cuban politician and founder of the Cuban Revolutionary Party, José Martí Pérez.
16:37The meeting was organized by the Educational Research Center of Panama, the National Secretariat
16:42of Science and Technology, with the support of the United Nations Development Program.
16:48The director of the Center for Martí Studies in Havana, María Marlene Vázquez, was present
16:54at the activity, giving lectures on the legacy of José Martí and its relevance in current
16:59times in Latin America.
17:01During her participation, Vázquez referred to the Cuban Politicians Project as an emancipatory
17:06plan that seeks to train responsible citizens to lead the fates of their countries.
17:17And with films, scripts, posters and films in production, the Cuban capital will host
17:22From December 5th to the 15th, the 45th edition of the Fana Film Festival, the international
17:28festival of the new Latin American cinema.
17:31The director of the event, Dania Delgado Fernández, pointed out that it will contemplate a wide
17:37range of works from 42 countries with special representation of Latin American audiovisual
17:43creations.
17:44She also mentioned that the space will be dedicated to Argentinian cinema, its evolution
17:49and current situation.
17:51The festival receives films that have been screened at other events around the world,
17:55but it is also the time to premiere regional cinema wonders.
18:10And the first two episodes of the series 100 Years of Solitude, inspired by the work of
18:16Gabriel García Márquez, will have their world premiere in Cuba at the Havana Film
18:21Festival.
18:22The director of the event, Dania Delgado, announced that the screening of the series
18:26is scheduled for December 6th at the Central Yara Cinema.
18:30In this sense, the audiovisual adaptation is considered an unprecedented production
18:35in Latin America.
18:45And the World Television Day is celebrated every November 21st, a date established by
18:50the UN to promote the responsible use of television as one of the principal means of public information.
18:57The first World Television Forum was held on November 21st and 22nd of 1996, with the
19:03participation of important figures of this media, and a few days later, in December,
19:08the UN General Assembly approved the resolution to celebrate the World Television Day.
19:14The best way to celebrate this day is not to sit for hours consuming television content,
19:18but to promote a change in the viewer's culture by sharing information about television or
19:23digital programs that are rewarding, promoting values, or allow the development of some kind
19:29of skill or knowledge.
19:35And like this, we have come to the end of this News Brief.
