Boomer Esiason joins the show! What does Esiason think of the Patriots' penalties? Thoughts on officials? #NFL
Transcript
00:00Hey Boomer. Hey, good morning. Happy Thanksgiving week, you know, here we are
00:03It's Thanksgiving week and none of our football teams in our local markets
00:07Actually can do anything after this except jockey for first overall draft pick. Yeah. Well ours
00:14Unfortunately looks sloppy sloppy all over the place yesterday. You know what you actually caught the Miami Dolphins at the wrong time
00:21That was their team. That's who they are
00:23That's what their offense looks like when it is humming on all cylinders and they've been building to this
00:28The last three to four weeks since to a tongue-of-Iloa came back and man, it's so much fun to watch
00:33I know being on the losing side of it is not much fun
00:36But for me watching to a play that way watching Mike McDaniel call those plays
00:41Watching the speed that Miami has it's pretty impressive. I it is we've talked to you about it
00:47we we've talked a lot about it on the show the the defense this New England Patriots defense is is
00:54putrid is
00:56Should that not be Gerard Mayo's forte if he's gonna be able to accomplish anything this first season?
01:02Well, you'd like to think so. Yes and early on. I thought they were. Okay. I thought they kept them in games
01:06You remember we were talking about how Jacoby Brissett was gonna hand the ball off
01:10They were gonna run the ball with Ramon de Stevenson and they were gonna play defense and they're gonna play good solid special teams
01:16It was a pretty simple recipe, you know when you get this deep into the season
01:20You've played 12 games your offense is up and down. It's scattershot all over the place
01:25The defense has got an enormous amount of pressure on it
01:27And I'm just telling you guys that offense yesterday that we saw that's the Lions offense. That's the 49er offense with Brock Purdy
01:35That's the Green Bay Packer offense and and the Miami offense is faster than all of those teams
01:41So when they are rolling like they are that defense is gonna look really bad that that I don't know what else to tell you
01:48Watching this watching this game yesterday
01:49You could see the difference in speed and that's really what the NFL is built on
01:54boom, one of the things that really sticks out to me when I'm watching this football team is there they're so
02:00Undisciplined when it comes to penalties is this, you know, some of those penalties like the holdings you can kind of you know
02:06those are on the players, but how much do you put on the coaches when it comes to the discipline and
02:12Continuous to making penalties week after week. I don't know if you feel this way wigs
02:17I all I know is if we ever lost the game the way that the Patriots did yesterday
02:21I think they committed either 10 or 11 penalties and you came to work the next day
02:26your position coach was all over you and he was just just just
02:31Grinding you down because of the penalties and especially when they're false start penalties holding penalties
02:37Sometimes I can totally understand especially it's a quarterback
02:39I don't want anybody running free at me
02:41And so I always tell the guys if you got a hole the hole just just do whatever you got to do to keep them
02:45Out of the backfield, but I mean, it's the it's it's it's stupid penalties that drive you crazy
02:50Penalties that should not be made but sometimes, you know these these officials to depending
02:57I don't know which I don't know which crew they had yesterday, but I think some of these crews are just
03:04Impossible to deal with and it's impossible to watch the game
03:06The game is just not a good game. Sometimes when the officials get way too involved
03:10Boomer after the game Gerard Mayo was asked about the penalties and said that he could there was nothing he could do
03:16For them once they crossed the white line a lot of people upset about that. What do you think about that response?
03:21Yeah
03:22Well Bill Belichick wouldn't say that right and I guess we're comparing everything to him these days
03:26Because he's not coaching and we forget what the team looked like the last three years
03:31But I would say that yeah, it is on the players. It's always on the players
03:35They can coach as hard as they can but there's got to be accountability, too
03:39So it's gonna be up for coach Mayo to stand in front of that team today. Hold those guys accountable
03:44That's the only way I know how to handle something like this when there's a rash of penalties like this
03:49so I mean I just
03:52It's late the season. This team is not going anywhere. I don't think it's a very good team
03:56We've been talking about this all year long. They're right there with the Jets the Giants, you know the Panthers
04:03These are teams that are all bottom feeders right now
04:06And the thing that they have to get right is they have to get the offseason free agency, right?
04:10And they got to get the draft, right?
04:12I don't think they're gonna do anything with the coaching staff. I don't think they should I think they got to get another year
04:17I had a Drake May and see where he can take them
04:20Assuming that they can have a good draft and maybe go after somebody like a T Higgins a wide receiver
04:25Which would be a really nice addition for the Patriots
04:28Yeah, so you wouldn't touch anybody coaching staff wise. I can't say I don't I don't know enough
04:34I'd be lying if I sat here and told you I could I could go down the coaching staff and sit here and say fire
04:39This guy fired that guy. It's me coordinator wise, you know, Alex van Pelt or DeMarcus coming to
04:45So Alex has had success in this league and he's been around for a long time and he's and he's a little bit hamstrung
04:52You know with the revolving offensive line a rookie quarterback
04:55Wide receivers that you know, maybe they keep a couple they have to add to that position. I mean, let's face it guys
05:02I mean like you're not talking about like what you saw with the Miami Dolphins yesterday
05:06You saw speed you saw playmakers and you saw a quarterback that was so in sync with his play caller
05:12That that's what you're trying to get to and the Patriots just don't have that those types of players yet
05:18But you mentioned speed boomer and a huge story locally
05:22I'm sure it didn't get quite the run nationally was that Alex van Pelt had to be asked
05:29To play Marcus Jones on offense who is their electric putt returner
05:34defensive back who has been in the offense the last couple years and
05:38He admitted to not watching offensive film of the Patriots the last couple years in advance of taking this job
05:45Which to me, I don't know how you say that. I don't know how you do that
05:49It doesn't make it's unfathomable to me that you have a team this bereft of talent on offense and you have a guy that's sitting
05:55They're not like he's gonna make a playoff team, but the coordinator doesn't even watch the film of the team. He's taking over
06:02Yeah somewhere you get five or six plays maybe seven plays out of a guy like that. You know, it's I
06:07Mean, I I didn't hear that. He said that I mean that is a little bit of an indictment on himself to be honest
06:13I mean if you don't know your personnel
06:16Coming in and you don't know what's available to you, you know that that's on you. There's no question about that
06:21I think it's an indictment also of Gerard Mayo if the player has to text the offensive coordinator
06:28Which is what happened to say? Hey, I can also play on the other side of the football
06:33I mean, it's an indictment of the whole thing if that hasn't come up at all. Yeah, I would agree with you
06:38I I mean I just I
06:41It's it's a hard thing to really swallow when you hear the coach admit to something like that
06:46I mean, I don't even know why he would say that I'm
06:50I don't know. I would I think I would come up with something completely different like, you know, I know I know he's available
06:56I just haven't found a place to use him yet. We're gonna get him involved something like that
07:00He should he should they use the new phone? Who dis?
07:09Down in your neck of the woods Diana Rossini on a report this weekend that Aaron Rodgers will soon be benched placed on IR or
07:18Maybe even cut is the is the latter a possibility. I
07:24Guess if he would want to be cut now
07:26I I also said last week early in the week that he's playing with a bad hamstring his front leg
07:34He doesn't even throw off of it
07:35and I don't think he can and I think it's real it's it's obvious to me that there's a major issue there and then of
07:42course the reports come out yesterday from all the NFL insiders that he's not getting scans on his leg because he doesn't want answers because
07:48He know that he knows that he's got a really bad problem
07:51So I guess all of those things could be on the table right now
07:55It will be an interesting week around here for sure because you know, they're coming off of there by so Aaron's not been here
08:01He was at his 20-year
08:02reunion, I think out of Cal so
08:04this is gonna be a
08:06Really interesting
08:08McAfee a week because a lot of things written and said down here
08:12About Aaron in regards to whether or not the owner wanted him benched after the Bronco game
08:17Which I think was game for game five and I think they knew that he was hurt
08:21that's the only reason why the why the owner would have said that and then on the other side of
08:27Town is the New York Giants and they released Daniel Jones who after he clears waivers today at four o'clock. I
08:34Guarantee you he will sign with one of these teams that is in the playoff on as a backup quarterback
08:39Will he be a starter again in this league? Do you think I you know?
08:42Yeah, I do I do, you know, and the reason I say that is because Sam Donald, you know
08:47Is a starter Baker Mayfield is a starter. I mean it all
08:54No, man, you just got to get to the right place, you know, I actually like Daniel Jones
08:59He's highly inaccurate and I a lot of injuries early on in his career
09:04I think really did affect his growth and then the fact that he's had like four coaches in five years with five different offensive
09:10Coordinators that didn't help any and and quite frankly, I think he's a good player. I don't think he's a great player
09:16But if he gets at the right place
09:18somehow like like a Sam Donald type of situation could
09:23Really happen for him and I would I would suggest that somewhere along the line. He'll be a stopgap starter
09:28He's not going to be a long-term answer for anybody
09:31Malik neighbors calling his team soft and and then
09:35Moving on to whining about when he gets the football. Do you like that from a rookie wide receiver complaining from LSU?
09:45No, I mean it's like it seems like it's it happens every year one of these guys go off and and I understand he's frustrated
09:52Interesting in that offseason hard knocks Brian D'Abo when they were interviewing Malik
09:57he said do you like what do you how do you feel about losing because I hate losing and
10:02He's telling everybody that he hates losing
10:04So Brian is getting the answer that he got in real time now, and it's not pretty here
10:10it's ugly and when you have a
10:12Kind of a penchant rookie doing what he's doing and what he could tell you this, you know, nobody likes that
10:18Boomer what's up with the commanders to be seven and two and now seven and five seems like a bit of a fall from grace
10:23Defense and I also think Jaden Daniels is I kind of hit the wall a little bit but their defense is really
10:29Kind of falling apart here and that's supposed to be Dan Quinn's deal. Just like Gerard Mayo. That's supposed to be his deal
10:35Their defense has given up way too many big plays the
10:39Watching this game yesterday
10:41I can't go flipping back and forth and trying to keep up with what the hell was happening in it was almost impossible
10:47Because there were so many wild things that happened in this game, but you know
10:50There were like three teams that got tripped up within their division yesterday
10:54Obviously the commanders were one of them
10:56The Texans were one and then Arizona went out to Seattle Seattle beats them and Seattle's now in first place in the NFC West
11:02I do not want to see Seattle in the playoffs. It's just not it's not a pretty team. You know what I mean?
11:08It's just like nothing juicy about them
11:11You know what? I mean?
11:11I I want the 49ers to be back in there, but I don't they keep pushing these guys like out there that you know
11:19Can't can't play they can't replace the guys that they have when they are hurt because they have superstars and it's really killing their season
11:26Boom, are you brought up the Aaron Rodgers situation?
11:29I think the one thing that will be interested is he said he kind of wants to play next year
11:35If you had a gamble, do you think it's with another team?
11:39Is there another team out there that would want Aaron Rodgers? Yeah, I think there's always gonna be a team that would take Aaron Rodgers
11:46I definitely think that it depends on who the coach is because as we have seen down here now
11:52Especially this year not so much last year. I mean last year, you know, he got hurt and it unfortunately, you know
11:57Went south on him
11:58but this year I think he's hurt again and I think he's trying to play through the injury because of what happened last year in
12:04The pressure that has been around him in the offense and the fact that you know
12:08It's perceived that he's running the team because he's brought a lot of his buddies here to play with him
12:12I I know that he doesn't want to go out this way. That's for sure. Now. The question is
12:17Will Woody Johnson keep him here? I my feeling right now at this moment is no, he will not be here next year
12:24There'll be a new GM and of course a new head coach and I'm not so sure that they would want to inherit
12:29You know that all over again because it has really I mean he has really sucked the air out of the building and I don't mean
12:35That in a real negative way. I just mean it in a way that he is such a big personality and everybody has
12:42Deferred to him since he got here two years ago that people like stand around thinking that he's Superman and he's gonna make all these
12:49plays by himself and
12:50That has not been the case
12:52Question of the week for Boomer Esiason is presented by McFarland energy the region's most dependable provider of home heating oil delivery and
13:00expert HVAC services at McFarland energy calm because of wiggy and the fact that he continues to be a big ham guy
13:09Boomer question of the week is turkey or ham on Thursday 100% turkey and stuffing man. Thank you
13:17Don't eat much of it. Oh, thank you case closed
13:23A little bit of pineapple juice sauce running all over. Oh, you know what?
13:28Yeah, I would think that you being up there by Plymouth Rock and crap
13:35He's not a big fan of history
13:39Boomer we've been wondering
13:41Since last week why Robert Kraft continues to fail
13:45the vote to get into Canton and join the Football Hall of Fame any it's 304 13 now any
13:52Theories you have I mean, it just it seems just confounding
13:56You know, it is confounding to me too because from where I sit
14:01Mr. Kraft has had an incredible impact on the game itself
14:06Well, but don't worry about stuff off the field with his anti-semitism
14:10Fund and and all the other great things that he does that nobody even sees
14:14You know what?
14:15He has been a part of and the growth of the NFL since he took over the Patriots has been nothing short of
14:22Miraculous, so I'm one of those guys who does believe that he belongs in there's no question about it. It's really disappointing
14:29I hope that he gets him before too long. I want him to be able to enjoy it. He deserves it
14:34And hopefully next year, you know, they'll call his name. But yeah, it is a I don't have an answer for it
14:39I don't know why I mean if I just take a look at everything that he's accomplished
14:44Since he bought the Patriots of what they've done there with their Super Bowls and how the game has grown how the league has grown
14:51Stadiums have grown. I mean a lot of that is due in large part to his success
14:56Boomer have a great Thanksgiving and we'll talk to you again next week. Alrighty guys. Take care of
