Boomer Esiason joins the show! Are the Patriots the worst team in the NFL? What is going on with the turnovers?
Transcript
00:00Hey, good morning everybody. I'm wondering how you guys are doing. Are you guys okay?
00:05Well, we are at Gillette Stadium where every Monday, week after week after week, used to be a celebration of dynastic greatness.
00:15And unfortunately, it isn't this morning, Boomer.
00:18No, it's not. And combined with all the injuries that your team has, I would venture to say at this moment in time in this season,
00:25the Patriots look to be number 32 out of 32 teams as opposed to number one.
00:30It's a long way. This team has fallen a long way.
00:33So is this the worst team in the NFL right now?
00:36I think it is, just simply because of the lack of offense, the lack of big plays, the amount of injuries that they're dealing with,
00:43both on defense and offense. I mean, it's staggering.
00:47And they don't have Matthew Stafford back there, so he can't keep them in games because the Rams are going through the same thing.
00:54It's just, you know, if Jacoby's going to turn the ball over, then it's going to turn into a route.
00:58What they hadn't done the previous three weeks, they really hadn't turned the ball over.
01:02And then yesterday, there were three turnovers.
01:04And, you know, I'm just wondering, and I hate to do this to Gerard Mayo because I think he is a good coach,
01:09and I think the players really do respect him.
01:11But, you know, if Ramond Jerez-Stevenson is going to fumble and continue to fumble, if Bill Belichick were the head coach,
01:16do you think that guy would see the field?
01:18Wiggy?
01:19No, no, no. He would have been in the doghouse a long time ago.
01:22But, Boomer, what the hell are we waiting for?
01:24Let's throw all that nonsense out the window.
01:26Put Drake May in the game.
01:28The team stinks.
01:30I don't get why we just don't see what we got in here.
01:33You say we don't have Matthew Stafford.
01:35Who the hell knows what we got with Drake May if they don't play the damn kid?
01:38Yeah, I know it sounds easy to say that.
01:40I just think they're just waiting, and I understand it.
01:44There's no argument.
01:45What are you waiting for?
01:46What are you waiting for?
01:47Well, I don't want that kid to get hurt either, you know.
01:50There are a lot of things that are going on with this team right now.
01:53Their pass protection, their left tackle has been a turnstile.
01:57You can see Jacoby is under duress.
02:01You're hoping with a veteran quarterback that he doesn't make the mistakes.
02:05Now, this was a great interception by Fred Warner yesterday.
02:08But, I mean, anytime you have three turnovers,
02:12I can't even imagine what it would look like back there with a rookie quarterback.
02:16One thing I will say is that he will be able to make plays with his legs.
02:20We're not seeing that with Jacoby at all.
02:22And if you watch a lot of these games during Sundays or Monday nights tonight
02:26with two games, you're going to see quarterbacks running around
02:29and making extra plays.
02:30I would imagine that's what Drake May could bring to this offense.
02:34But I think they're just waiting until the right time to put him out there.
02:37I'm not sure when that time is going to be.
02:39But I know, Wiggy, you're frustrated.
02:41I'm sure the fans are frustrated.
02:42You want to see this young kid, but they don't want to ruin him
02:44like they ruined Mac Jones, that's for sure.
02:47Boomer, as a quarterback, though, watching Jacoby
02:49and the ownership he's been taking, I know that he talked to his team beforehand
02:53and said, it doesn't matter how many times I go down,
02:55I'm always going to get back up for you guys.
02:57Getting sacked six times and taking full ownership for the mistakes he made.
03:01How important is that for the rest of the team to look at as a leader for these guys?
03:06Totally respected, Courtney.
03:08And the reason I respect it is because I lived it.
03:10I lived it back in 1995 with the New York Jets.
03:12We were obviously the worst team in the league.
03:15The next year after I had left, they had only won one game in 1996.
03:19So we were on the precipice of being really bad and rebuilding
03:23before Bill Parcells left New England to come and fix the Jets.
03:27But, you know, it's tough.
03:29You're out there and you're out with a bunch of guys.
03:31It's a revolving door, whether it be the offensive line, wide receiver,
03:34running backs or fumble on the ball.
03:36You're trying to get everybody on the same page.
03:38And all you can do is stand tall and just be the professional
03:41that you are.
03:42I do respect what Jacoby is doing.
03:44Don't get me wrong.
03:45I'm just saying that, you know, right now, even if you had Patrick Mahomes,
03:49it would be untenable right now for any quarterback.
03:51That's why I think they're reticent to put in Drake May at the moment.
03:55Kendrick Bourne made the trip with them.
03:57If he's available this week, does that change things somehow?
04:02I don't know.
04:04I mean, unless they're playing seven on seven.
04:08You know, seven on seven means no defensive
04:10and no offensive linemen on the field, you know,
04:13which is more or less flag football.
04:15But I just – it doesn't matter.
04:17Like I said, the offensive line has got to get fixed first.
04:19The quarterback is not going to be a guy that's going to create secondary plays.
04:23He's going to try to play careful.
04:25I know what they're trying to do.
04:27I know what their winning formula is.
04:29I mean, they almost beat Seattle.
04:31They did beat Cincinnati with the winning formula.
04:33Don't turn the ball over.
04:35Play smart offense.
04:36Play field position.
04:37Kick a couple field goals.
04:39And hopefully you can keep the score combined under 40.
04:43And if you can do that, then that's the winning –
04:45that's kind of the winning formula for the Patriots.
04:47And we are so far away from where we were
04:51when the miserable Tom Brady was running the team.
04:55And Baker Mayfield, I guess, said he was miserable down in Tampa,
04:58but all he did was win a Super Bowl.
05:01Yeah, I long for the days of Tom being the most miserable 8-0 quarterback.
05:05But my thing, Boomer, is this is now the fourth consecutive year
05:09the Patriots are 1-3 after four games.
05:12And this roster, the pathetic nature of it, is a choice by the owner of this team.
05:19They could have spent more money this offseason.
05:21They were not going to win a Super Bowl.
05:22They probably weren't going to win the division.
05:24But watching this product yesterday was offensive.
05:28And I don't understand how you enter a season
05:31knowing that the offensive line will sustain injuries
05:34as weak and as thin as they elected to this year.
05:37Yeah, and, you know, you lose David Andrews now.
05:41I don't know how long that's going to be.
05:43But I just – I think this is a rebuilding year for them.
05:47I think they recognize that.
05:48I would imagine that they're going to spend a lot of money in the offseason.
05:50They're going to have another high draft pick.
05:53You know, this is how you rebuild in today's NFL.
05:56And we all knew – listen, everybody knew coming in
05:59that this was going to be a hard year.
06:00Everybody knew it was going to be a slog.
06:02Everybody knew that really the only thing to look forward to
06:05in terms of the Patriots was when was Drake May going to take over
06:09and what was he going to look like.
06:11So I just want to be realistic.
06:12I mean, I didn't have any expectations for the Patriots to make the playoffs.
06:17I didn't have any expectations for the Patriots to win the division.
06:21Maybe because of what the Miami Dolphins are going through right now
06:23with their own quarterback situation.
06:25Maybe somehow, some way they stay even with them this year.
06:29But if things stay the way they are,
06:30I would think that they're going to have a top two draft pick next year,
06:34which will help in the development of the quarterback,
06:37but also help the front office be able to either take somebody
06:42at number two or one or trade that out and start rebuilding the team
06:46like some other teams around the league have done.
06:48I think that's exactly the game plan going forward into this year
06:53and then beyond that.
06:56Every time we ask Jarrod Mayo about starting Drake May,
06:59he brings up the plan.
07:01Nobody will say what the plan was,
07:05when the plan allows for Drake May to start.
07:09In your mind, what was the plan?
07:13Like when you draft a quarterback at number three
07:17and then you go into the season with Jacoby Brissett,
07:21who has been in the league a long time
07:23and that's about all we can say for him.
07:25What was the plan?
07:27The plan is not what Carolina did to Bryce Young.
07:30I can tell you that.
07:31The plan is not what the Jets did to Zach Wilson.
07:35The plan is to bring this kid along slowly.
07:37The plan is to figure out the best time to put him in the game,
07:41watch him in practice, listen to him in meetings,
07:43make sure that he knows everything that's going on.
07:46A 40-year-old quarterback leading the Jets yesterday
07:49got hit with a safety blitz.
07:51I thought I'd seen everything.
07:53After watching Aaron Rodgers be completely caught off guard
07:59by a safety blitz in the heart of the game,
08:01when you're thinking to yourself,
08:02this guy has seen everything and he can react to everything,
08:04and he didn't react at all to it.
08:06So now put that all the way to the other end of the spectrum
08:10and you have a young quarterback
08:11with a very, very shaky offensive line.
08:15Those two combinations do not work out, guys.
08:18I'm telling you, the last thing they want
08:20is to have Drake May get hurt.
08:22So this is going to be a learning year for him.
08:23Eventually, he'll get on the field at some point.
08:26I don't think it really matters at the present moment.
08:29I would think that probably after they're by,
08:32assuming that Jacobi Pruset does not get hurt.
08:35Well, you told us who the worst team in the league is right now.
08:37The Vikings have now beaten the Niners, the Texans, and the Packers.
08:42Are they the best team in the NFL right now?
08:44I mean, they look fantastic.
08:46And this week, they've got to go to London
08:47and they've got to play the Jets on Sunday morning.
08:50So the Jets are going to see another ghost of the past,
08:53and that's going to be Sam Darnold,
08:54who saw a ghost when he was playing New England.
08:56He's not seeing ghosts anymore.
08:58He's seeing Justin Jefferson and Addison,
09:00and he's seeing an offensive juggernaut
09:03that is being run by Kevin O'Connell, their head coach.
09:05You know, I often talk about matching coaches with quarterbacks
09:09and whether or not those quarterbacks can become who they are
09:13with the coach, with the offense that they're running.
09:15Sam Darnold's lucky.
09:17He went to quarterback school last year.
09:18He went to San Francisco.
09:19Didn't play a down.
09:20Watched Brock Purdy.
09:22You know, watch Kyle Shanahan, how they ran the offenses.
09:25Signed a $10 million a year bet on himself,
09:27$10 million contract bet on himself this year in Minnesota.
09:31And right now, you know, he is looking like, you know,
09:34the second coming, you know, for the Minnesota Vikings.
09:37So this is a huge game this week in London.
09:40I'm assuming that they're favorites as I wake up this morning,
09:43and I would imagine that he's got a lot, a lot of pent-up energy
09:47to go after the Jets, you know, come Sunday.
09:50Greg rigs up the Vikings, and you look at them, the Chiefs, the Seahawks,
09:54the only three undefeated teams so far through four weeks.
09:57For week five, you see the first real big bye of the week.
10:00For players and for coaches, is this the first time where you get
10:04a better sense of who you are as a team,
10:06where people are able to take a step back,
10:08the teams that have a bye can reevaluate,
10:10and this is where maybe going into week six
10:12you get a better sense of who we have.
10:15Yeah, you know, I think that there are teams like Baltimore and Cincinnati
10:18that won yesterday, and Baltimore just absolutely drilled Buffalo last night,
10:22much like Buffalo drilled Jacksonville last week.
10:25Most of the coaches think that the first four weeks are preseason,
10:28and then, you know, the final 13 weeks are where you really make your move.
10:33And it seems like Cincinnati's got their act together
10:35the last couple weeks offensively.
10:37Their defense is still struggling.
10:38I felt like the Houston Texans played a great game yesterday,
10:41CJ Stroud had a nice bounce back game as they beat Jacksonville,
10:44but there are teams out there like Jacksonville, like the Patriots,
10:48and of course you look at, I'm trying to think, the Giants,
10:52where they are in trouble, and they know they're in trouble.
10:55They know that this is going to be a long season.
10:58The question is, are coaches like Doug Peterson and Brian Dayball
11:02going to be long for their teams this time next year?
11:05I guess it all depends on how these next 13 weeks kind of shake out,
11:09but there are guys that are really teetering right now,
11:11especially some of these teams that are not doing well.
11:15And I can sit here and tell you that the Los Angeles Rams are bad
11:18because of all the injuries.
11:20I can say that the New England Patriots are bad because of all the injuries.
11:23But, you know, you talk about the Arizona Cardinals,
11:26you talk about the Giants who spent a lot of money in the offseason.
11:28Those are coaches that I would worry about long term
11:32with their respective franchises.
11:34Is Nick Sirianni's job in jeopardy?
11:36I would say too, yeah.
11:37I mean, you know, simply because they hired coordinators,
11:40and I don't feel like he had any say in who they hired as coordinators.
11:44And that tells me that the GM doesn't respect the head coach.
11:47You know, and that's a big deal.
11:49It's a big deal in Philadelphia.
11:50I mean, you know, they won a tough game at New Orleans last week,
11:54so maybe New Orleans is not as good as we all thought they were.
11:56But Baker Mayfield bounced back and, I mean, just ripped through Philadelphia.
12:01You know, it was interesting thinking about what Baker was saying
12:04about Tom Brady.
12:05You know, there is something to be said about winning all those Super Bowls
12:08and showing up and holding everybody accountable.
12:11And it is not, you know, it's not a spa.
12:14It's not a retreat.
12:15It's a professional football team, for God's sakes.
12:17It's not Disney, as Tom said, right?
12:19Exactly.
12:20I agree with him 100%.
12:21And until some of these players realize it, you know,
12:24they'll be stuck in mediocrity,
12:25and he'll stand alone as the greatest of all time.

12:41Is Jaden Daniels the frontrunner for Offensive Rookie of the Year right now?
12:45100%.
12:46100% he is.
12:47I mean, Malik Nabors will be there towards the end.
12:49It's kind of like Mac Jones and Jamar Chase,
12:52the year that those guys came out, where I thought Mac –
12:54I thought Mac should have been the Offensive Rookie of the Year,
12:57but Jamar had a second half of the season to remember.
13:00So Jaden Daniels right now, leader in the clubhouse.
13:03Malik Nabors, I would think, is a close second,
13:05given his explosive nature with the Giants.
13:08But I think because Washington is going to obviously win more games
13:12than the Giants, he is definitely probably going to come away with it.
13:15Well, Jaden Daniels behind that strong offensive line
13:18they got down there in Washington.
13:20Boomer, you know what I'm tired of as somebody –
13:24as a fan and somebody who sits in and talks about this every day
13:27and listens to all the –
13:28Losing.
13:29Well, you're tired of losing.
13:30That's right.
13:31Yeah, I am tired of losing.
13:32No, no, but I'm tired of the low-hanging fruit like,
13:35oh, he's going to get hurt if you put him in the game.
13:38So I would ask you this question.
13:40What's the difference between Week 5 and Week 14 after the bye week?
13:46His own experience, you know, just understanding better
13:50what they're trying to do offensively, communication with his teammates.
13:54You know this, Jermaine.
13:55Come on.
13:56I don't know if you've ever – did you ever play with a rookie quarterback?
13:58Yeah, I have, but I also know that the experience –
14:01He takes credit for Tom Brady.
14:03I also know as a player the experience that you actually get from playing
14:08puts you a lot further along than sitting behind somebody
14:12and never being able to get the –
14:14the only experience you get is sitting there in the classroom
14:17listening to the coach say, oh, you do this, you do that.
14:20So I don't subscribe to the –
14:22I don't want to be disrespectful to a tight end.
14:25I don't.
14:27You block and catch and you do your little thing over there
14:30and then you go and sit on the sideline for a couple plays
14:32and then you come back out on there.
14:34The quarterback's got to stay out there the whole time.
14:36He's got to communicate to everybody.
14:38He's got to change protections at the line of scrimmage.
14:40He's got to read what the defense is doing.
14:42You read one or two guys.
14:43I got to read 11.
14:45You know, I got to see what the hell's going on.
14:47I got to see the defensive fronts.
14:48Do we have the right run call?
14:49Do we have the right personnel on the field?
14:51You know, all you guys are sitting there looking like me
14:53and I got to tell you what to do.
14:55And if I don't know what the hell I'm doing,
14:57then you're not going to know what the hell you're doing
14:59and I'm going to end up getting killed.
15:01I don't know what type of tight ends you played
15:02where you had to tell them what to do.
15:04You explained it.
15:05I think you got it.
15:07All right, Boomer.
15:09Well, hang in there.
15:10All I can tell you is just hang in there.
15:12You know what?
15:13The draft is about, what, six months away.
15:15You know, you guys will be on the clock.
15:17All right, we'll talk to you next week.
15:18All right, see you guys.
