Boomer talks upcoming Pats season. How big of a change will it be not seeing Bill on sidelines? Will the new job be easier for Tom or Bill?
Transcript
00:00And he's back Boomer Esiason. Hey Boomer. Hey, good morning, man. Are you ready for a long year?
00:06Oh, I believe that this is our sixth season together. Is that possible? I I can't believe time is flying by
00:14I will say for me
00:15This is year 22 doing something in boston radio. I'll be with you guys wei or wow station and uh,
00:22I'm, certainly happy to be with you and courtney. I just wish jermaine would show up on time
00:26He just he lives in the city
00:29He literally just walked in he lives in the city, but he can't get here on time
00:32Nobody gave me the memo that the time. Okay. Yeah, we did but that's all right
00:36It hasn't changed for five freaking years, man
00:39We gave you we put it in email form and then what it is and then he used it to roll something up and smoke something
00:45What's an email?
00:48Yeah, you know the amazing thing is that bill belichick just wouldn't talk to him for two weeks
00:52That's what would happen if he was late to a meeting or or didn't show up for some reason
00:57Congrats on your new deal, by the way
00:58Yeah, thank you very much and i'm very happy here at wfan and uh,
01:03I finally get my weekends off no longer going to be a part of the nfl today
01:06Which i'm okay with and I was okay with towards the end of last year
01:09But be the first time in 38 years that i'm actually going to have fall weekends
01:14I haven't had fall weekends and you know and uh and real vacations for thanksgiving and things of that nature as opposed to
01:21Having to go to the studio the amazing thing to me
01:24Going into this year and I was thinking this to myself because i've been doing this for 22 years
01:28I've been doing the nfl today for 22 years wfan. I started my 18th year bill belichick
01:34started coaching in the nfl in
01:371974
01:38This is the first time in 50 years that coach belichick will not be standing on a sideline or sitting up in a booth
01:45Amazing, right?
01:46But it's crazy certainly is is taking any and all offers that come his way
01:51I would too if I were him. Why not?
01:53I mean, you know get out there show people your personality and
01:56I don't care about his personal life any of that stuff
01:58all I care about is that this is the greatest coach and
02:01in the history of the sport that we all love and the league that we all love and
02:05You know, he'll be he should be back on the sideline next year
02:07I don't know where uh, but he better be back on the sideline next year unless he's having too much fun not coaching
02:12Well, I asked this earlier, but i'll ask you by mid season
02:17Who do you think is better at their new job bill belichick or tom brady?
02:22That's that's good. You know, I think it's going to be harder for tom brady simply because you know while fans most fans
02:28I think most fans and I speak
02:31As a fan myself do respect what he accomplished as a player. This is the you know, the goat
02:36This is a guy that won superbowls in multiple cities multiple coaches
02:40I mean
02:41All of that part of the resume speaks for itself, but doing games is going to be interesting
02:47You know, he has a unique voice. It's going to take a while to get used to that
02:50um, I think that there's going to be a little bit of you know, getting used to
02:55being in real time talking about football in real time and and
03:00whether or not he's going to be
03:02uh, I guess
03:03Criticizing the coaches and their calls and the players and their plays that's yet to be seen. But um
03:09I I kind of think bill has an opportunity to be really good because it's a different format
03:15He's not calling games. Tom's got to call games. He's got to get used to it. And i'm sure there are a lot of fans
03:20Uh that root for the jets that are not going to be looking forward to him doing games
03:24I can say that too. Well things up here may be a little miserable this season
03:28Um, are are you surprised that gerard mayo is going with jacoby brissett week one?
03:34Not at all, and I think it's the right move
03:36Um, and the reason I say that is because i've watched quarterbacks get thrown to the wasteland down here in new york
03:42I mean, they've had three first round picks mark sanchez sam darnold and of course
03:46Zach wilson and there's been very little great success
03:50There was a little bit of a modicum of success with mark sanchez who took the team to two afc championship games
03:56But it wasn't because of him. It was because of the defense the running game and rex ryan
04:00So, um, I would hate to see drake may get behind this offensive line
04:04Uh against the cincinnati bingles in week one or for that matter any time in the first five or six weeks
04:10I want him sitting on the sideline learning and seeing and not having his career ruined before it even gets started
04:16Five or six weeks it may it wasn't
04:19Jacoby brissett is probably going to get hurt the first two weeks
04:23And I don't mean to say that to be funny
04:24But it's just the reality of the league and it's the reality of who jacoby is, you know, jacoby
04:29Uh is uh, you know, he tends to get hurt and uh that that may open the door for drake may earlier than I would like
04:36But I look gerrard has been around bill belichick for five years as a coach played for him as a player
04:42Uh knows what a quarterback is supposed to look like because he played with the greatest of all time
04:46And he may see that in drake may right now
04:50But he also knows that you know, tom brady didn't start right out day one
04:53Aaron rogers didn't start day one carson palmer didn't start out day one
04:57And I don't think they have the support around the young quarterback
05:01Uh to give him a chance to grow early on in the season
05:04So I think it's a practical move by gerrard mayo. I mean he may have stumbled the way that he
05:10Kind of explained it but I do believe it's the right move to keep the kid on the sideline. He's going to play
05:15There's no question about that. It's just a matter of
05:18Why is he going to play?
05:19Is it going to be because of jacoby brissett being ineffective or jacoby brissett getting hurt?
05:25But you know, this is not a team built to support a rookie quarterback right now
05:29This is not the bears that caleb williams is stepping into this is not, you know
05:33The texans that cj stroud stepped into last year. This is a team in total rebuild mode who probably has a bottom four
05:41Uh, you know skilled position group around him
05:44Out of the 32 teams in the nfl you bring up your jets
05:48Uh, the outlook for this season is all over the place depending on what anonymous poll you follow
05:53Uh in new york, what are the whispers? What is what are you guys expecting out of aaron rogers?
05:58Is this going to be another tough jet season? I hope not. I pray to god
06:03It's not I mean, you know last year was just like pulling teeth and you know
06:07I'm, hoping that aaron is healthy if he's healthy on paper. They're really good. They are a really good team
06:12They are they are definitely a top 10 team as we start this season
06:15I just don't know what to expect from their offense
06:17We haven't heard much from their offensive coordinator nate hackett and that's probably a good thing because uh, you know
06:22He can be a little bit stale and a little bit downtrodden when he gets in front of the mic. So
06:27Um, they try to keep him away from the mic, I think but it's this is aaron rogers team
06:31We all know it and he's the one that has to throw for 4 000 yards
06:35He's the guy that's got to throw for 35 touchdowns. He's got to raise the level of play
06:39He's got a lot of really good playmakers around him. Their offensive line has been rebuilt again
06:45And if they can hold up and he can hold up and get rid of the ball and play
06:49The way that tom brady played his last 10 seasons like standing in the pocket and throwing it as opposed to
06:54Trying to run around and create plays at the age of 40
06:56I think they're going to be a really good team boomer
06:58the only issue I have with sitting drake may is we talk to everybody and
07:03Everybody that I've never played the game and i'd ask you this
07:06You don't learn anything from standing on the sideline. You don't learn anything
07:11From just watching somebody else and so when you look at the drake may situation
07:17I don't hear the same sentiment to a guy like jayden daniels on why he's playing
07:22I think it's just best to throw the rookie out there
07:25What do you feel like you learned honestly from playing this game by standing on the sideline?
07:31Well, I I was rambunctious my rookie year
07:33but then again
07:33I was sitting behind kenny anderson and turk schoner two guys that had been in cincinnati for many many many many many many years
07:40and they took me under their wing and I ended up playing four games my rookie season jermaine and
07:45I mean I had no idea what I was doing and I swear to god if social media were around back in 1984
07:50There's no way the bingos would have brought me back. I mean I was awful
07:54I mean and that was before the coach the quarterback communication device you had to memorize the entire offense you had to know it by
08:01signals and personnel groupings and you know how
08:04Uh, you know how deep you have to go to really know exactly everything you're doing then on top of that
08:09You got to try to read defenses and figure out what they're trying to do to you
08:13so, uh, you know jordan love sat
08:15Uh, aaron rogers sat there's a lot of guys that have sat that have gone on to have great careers or are budding
08:22Uh great careers like jordan loves so it works both ways
08:26I just don't think that the patriots right now are strong enough
08:30Offensively both on the offensive line, which I don't know what to expect
08:33I don't think you guys know what to expect their wide receiver group while okay, they're all in the nfl
08:38They're all nfl players
08:40This is like I said a bottom four skill group. This is not the dolphins
08:44This is not uh, the eagles or the 49ers the bingos
08:48I mean, you know, this is a team that is in clear transition with a rookie head coach
08:54And I think the rookie head coach made a very calculated
08:58Move and i'm sure people in the front office probably agree with it
09:01And we'll see him a little bit later on depending on how jacoby does but I don't expect them
09:07To have anything but maybe like the 30th or
09:1129th or 28th ranked offense in the nfl when the season's over with
09:15Boomer for the first time in 20 years. We have a repeat champion in mahomes and the chiefs
09:21Just we were talking about this this summer
09:23Do you think patrick mahomes would make every nfl team even one as bereft of talent as the patriots a playoff team?
09:32I think he would I think he's so good and you know
09:34His numbers sometimes don't reflect some of the numbers of some of the other players that players position, you know
09:39Like brock purdy to uh, you know, those guys, uh, kirk cousins up in minnesota now down in atlanta those guys put up huge numbers
09:46uh
09:47Where where patrick's numbers start showing up? It's in the fourth quarter if the game's close
09:51He's taking it over and they're going to win nine times out of ten
09:54Um, he is a truly truly special player and you know, he does things at the quarterback position
09:59I'd like to say we've never seen before
10:01Um, tom brady was one guy that did it differently. Aaron rogers does it differently peyton manning did it differently?
10:07Dan marino did it differently, you know?
10:09He's in a class right now where he has an opportunity to do something
10:12Nobody has done and I think that that is fueling him and I think he'll end up setting another
10:17Record for a contract after the season's over when I do believe
10:21Kansas city is going to have to rip up that initial 10-year 450 million dollar deal and pay him at least 70 million a year
10:28um speaking of that, uh
10:30Dak prescott, do you think the cowboys get a deal done with him this week?
10:34They need to I mean, I I would hate for dak prescott to go in this season as a lame duck
10:38Uh, he doesn't deserve it. I you know, I don't know what the alternative is for them
10:42I mean, you know, he and cd lamb are a special combination. They put up huge numbers
10:46Yeah, and I know that they have failed in the playoffs
10:49I I totally understand that a lot of that is not dax fault
10:52some of it is injury much like what happened to miami at the end of last year, but
10:56I I am a big fan of dak prescott
10:58I believe he's a top 10 quarterback in the nfl and I believe he's the great face of that franchise
11:03You know think about that franchise for a second, you know, the ownership's crazy, right? So he's all over the place
11:08He's out there giving interviews. He gives he's got his own radio show like I do right here with you guys
11:13I mean, it's an owner of the nfl team and he's doing this every freaking week and he's over, you know
11:18He's talking over the coach talking over the quarterback
11:20I mean pay the guy keep the guy for the next five years. You have a good team right now
11:25you're not going to be able to get one of these quarterbacks at the top of next year's draft because
11:30You know, they'll have at least 10 wins this year. So that means they're going to the playoffs I believe
11:34assuming that tack doesn't get hurt, but
11:36Um, I would pay him I would keep him and I think he's the great face of that franchise
11:40Well, I think you're you're probably spot on about that boomer
11:43The biggest question is always the coach in dallas, but we talked about this yesterday bill belichick
11:49He spoke so highly of the jets organization
11:52I know the expectations in new york gotta be for the jets
11:56Hey, we gotta get to the afc championship or bust any chance
12:01You talked a little bit about it that we see bill belichick
12:04wearing a jets, you know
12:08Next season because aaron rogers in the window for the jets is is is closing
12:14Yeah, I don't know if you remember the whole breakup with the jets there jermaine. I was there. Oh, yeah
12:19Yeah, I was side of hc of the nyj man
12:22That was interesting and I I was a big proponent of that because I felt like in some ways bill parcells his buddy
12:29really
12:30Protected the jets and kind of screwed his friend and his defensive coordinator who he won championships with bill belichick by resigning
12:37With the jets it automatically invoked the clause in the contract for bill belichick to become the head coach of the jets
12:43Which then led to the ugly breakup and then uh, you know the the trade with new england and everything else like that
12:49So I don't want to rehash all of that all over again
12:52I just I said down here i'd i'd love to see him out on the sideline of the jets
12:56But I don't I don't necessarily know that that's going to happen
12:59Especially if they do win this year and I think you know, rob sala has been given a very very long leash here
13:06Uh, he's had quarterback problems
13:08He's had injury problems and the fact that he's still a coach after three years and a losing record is really quite amazing to me
13:14But I think the jets have been trying to find stability and I think this year is the year that
13:21They're going to go to the playoffs. They're not going to go to the superbowl. I'm not picking them to go to the superbowl
13:24I don't I don't know how anybody beats kansas city
13:27Uh with andy reid and patrick mahomes, you know, they're they're just gonna they're just gonna steamroll I think and they added offensive speed
13:34Uh to their juggernaut offense already
13:36So they should be tough to beat but for the jets and bill belichick, I don't you know, I don't see it
13:41I would see maybe more the giants than the jets depending on how the giants look this year and I
13:46I don't necessarily know they're going to have a great year either
13:49All right time for the question of the week for boomer presented by mcfarland energy the region's most dependable provider of home heating oil
13:57delivery and expert hvac services at mcfarland energy.com
14:03assuming
14:04That the patriots unfortunately finish last in it
14:08How do you think the division stacks up boomer I would say right now I I think that
14:14I think the jets have a chance to win the division based on the fact
14:18That they have really young great star offensive players and they have a top five defense
14:25now
14:26miami has maybe
14:28Either the first or second best and fastest collection of skilled players on offense
14:33But I think their defense is probably going to be middle of the road
14:36And buffalo is like, you know led by josh allen a younger team that's kind of rebuilding around their superstar quarterback
14:43So I think I I could see the three teams at the top of this division splitting their games
14:48And I could see the patriots not winning one or maybe winning one within the division. So i'm gonna go jets
14:55Dolphins bills patriots. Okay, and then it I mean season starts tomorrow night
15:00So i'll get you on record as we always do who do you got in the super bowl?
15:04I got I got kansas city and uh, detroit. Oh, oh, I like that. Really? I like
15:10Think about detroit for a second now
15:11They have to play indoors because jared goff outside is not great. He's got a little bit of a noodle for an arm outside
15:18Inside, you know, he can play he's accurate. He's smart
15:21He's going to have more responsibilities supposedly in ben johnson's offense this year
15:25Uh, they got the best offensive line of football. They got uh, tremendous wide receivers. Jamir gibbs is a hell of a running back
15:33Um, they remind me of the atlanta falcons now
15:37The atlanta falcons have has cut they have cousins down there and it's interesting that they didn't really play michael pennix jr
15:44In preseason because they were wowed by him in practice and on the field
15:48And they don't want to start a quarterback controversy after guaranteeing kirk cousins 100 million dollars
15:53But when you look at their skill group and you look at their offensive line, they remind me of the detroit lions
15:59So I wouldn't be surprised if we see
16:02Detroit and atlanta or detroit and san francisco and or detroit and green bay
16:07Uh in an nfc championship game so long as dan campbell isn't distracted by the applebee's commercials
16:14I love that. Come on. You gotta love that guy, man
16:17Let me ask you. Let me ask you all this one question
16:20Who is your favorite nfl coach in the nfl right now to listen to and cover on a daily basis?
16:28I it has to it probably has to be dan campbell
16:32No
16:33Mike
16:36Really yeah
16:38I vote dan campbell though. I I do think that that's a boomer millennial difference though. Yeah, it probably is. Yeah
16:43Former tight end can't mean marry me. I mean, I mean greg's age. He means me and you
16:48All right, but what do you mean my age boomer's older than me?
16:50But boomer picked mike mcdaniel boomer played in the league before the forward pass
16:54You know, I actually had the original mike mcdaniel and that was sam weich now he was crazy
17:00Now god god loved him rest his soul and I loved playing for him and he made it really unique to play
17:05In the nfl and I think that's what mike mcdaniel does the dolphins speaking of all this is my last one
17:11Old old man here screaming at clouds. Did you ever hold out or uh, or or hold in boomer?
17:17No, I never did now interesting the bingles always pay their quarterbacks
17:21uh, they came to me twice and redid my deal before they had to do it much like they did with uh,
17:27Joe burrow, but what um, what jamar chase is trying to do right now is he's trying to break the mold
17:33Um bengals don't have to pay him
17:35They have him under control for the next two years at a guarantee
17:38I think close to 25 million over two years because they picked up his fifth year option
17:43And if you know minnesota tried to do this with justin jefferson
17:46Last year and it didn't work and then justin got his big contract this year in his fourth year same
17:50Same with brandon iuk and same with cd lamb. They're a year ahead
17:54Of jamar chase the only way I believe the bengals pay jamar chase
17:58Is if they see where they can save money on the back end of the contract
18:02Which is what they did to me twice. They bought out a couple years early, but they paid me less on the back end
18:08So, um when I was at the end, you know
18:10In the middle of my career and they they upped me to three million a year
18:14The next thing, you know, john elway was making five million and dan marino was making six million
18:18So I was when I signed I was the highest paid but in in a matter of like six months
18:22I went from being the highest paid to about the 15th highest paid. So
18:26That's how the bengals operate. I just don't see them paying jamar chase
18:30The money that he wants at the level
18:34Of justin jefferson just yet because they don't have to pay him that boomer osias and great having you back this season, man
18:40I look forward to it. I know it's going to be a long year
18:41It's going to be a tough year gerard's going to have his hands full
18:44But we're going to try to make it interesting every week. All right. We'll talk to you monday. Thanks. Okay guys. Thanks
18:49Have a great weekend
