The Texans have lost to bad teams and competed well against most good ones. Are they playing down to their competition, or just a mediocre team?

00:00A lot of people weighing in on the 5-Hour Energy fan line. 5-Hour Energy, the official
00:03energy shot of Sports Radio 610 and Football Superfans. We'll get to some of your thoughts
00:08in just a second, but everybody's very frustrated right now. Someone said all caps,
00:15CLOWN OPERATION perfectly said. They were yesterday. They've been a clown operation
00:20the whole time. Don't get it twisted, but yesterday, that was a clown operation on all
00:24sides on all facets of the game. Yes. You let Amy Adams strunk come in and basically say,
00:31Oh, we own this now. Yeah, man, that was, that's, oh man, I haven't even thought about that. Yes,
00:35they did. Jimmy Ward was on the post. She slept in the Astrodome the night before she did for
00:39old time's sake. Um, Jimmy Ward was on the post game show yesterday and I got him scheduled for
00:45the post game show after he got the pick six, you know, I was excited at that. All right,
00:49this is where it turns. They put these guys away. They're going to wither the better team.
00:53You needed to play from the defense. They got a fuel goal to actually go up 27, 23. And now I'm
00:58like, all right, yeah, you just got to keep them out of the end zone. Just don't, if you don't
01:00give up any big 60 yard plays, you keep them out of the end zone. Literally five seconds after I
01:06said that Conqua his name, it goes set tight end goes 70 yards for a touchdown. I, uh, you know
01:12what I meant? I was listening and I was kind of, it was a hodgepodge of watching on TV and listening
01:17on the radio yesterday. And that was exactly my, I missed that play. I stepped back out from the
01:23bathroom and I hear Andre just flipping the hell out. And I'm like, what, why, what possibly could
01:30have happened? That was so, Oh, that, that's pretty bad. Henry Toto would get sucked up on
01:35the play action as the Texans defenders tend to do. And then the tight end catches the ball.
01:42And then, you know, there were a few, a few, a few Texans through their bodies in that general
01:47direction direction, but generally uncontested into the end zone. Yep. Yep. Um, so Jimmy Ward,
01:52as soon as he got that pick six, I text Omar heads up PR for the Texans. I'm like, Jimmy's our guy.
01:57Let's get him on the post game. Yeah. And, and then the Texans lose. And in some ways I was
02:02even more glad we got Jimmy Ward on the post game. Cause after a loss, you just never know
02:05with a player, Jimmy Ward, I knew we were going to get some unvarnished opinion on where this team
02:10is at right now. You know, he's, he's, uh, honest to a fault, I would say in interviews and he did
02:15not disappoint. Um, here was Jimmy Ward wondering why the team plays and yesterday played down to
02:23its level of competition starts from the top starts from, uh, captains starts from the vets.
02:29It just got us, we got to play. We got to play good. First of all, we got to play good. And then
02:34we've got to start calling people out. We've got to have our, that's just how it goes. We got to
02:38have our own pony players meeting. We, we had a few of those already probably going to have to
02:43have another one and just, you know, try to, try to, try to see what's going on, man. Like I was
02:48like, I don't like to say this, but we, we, I feel like we played down to our competition at times.
02:54Like throughout this year, when I've been looking at it, it was like, I don't know, I don't know
02:59what it is. We've just been taking some, some of these guys lightly, especially in the first half.
03:04Well, no, no, I'll take that back. It was the second half slump that we, that we was doing over
03:08the last few weeks. But this week is like, we woke up and it was the second half. Like we can't,
03:13we can't do that. That's losing football. Okay. So, I mean, he's, he's saying something
03:18when he said that in my mind, I'm going, Oh, you don't say, um, that's, this is that game.
03:23They played yesterday is the same game. They've been playing for a year and a half now. It just
03:27happened to, it just happened to fall the other way this time. You know, you know what, Sean?
03:32I mean, in, in a lot of respects, we, we talked earlier about how, okay, this team clearly isn't
03:37ready for primetime in that if you, when you get to the playoffs, Hey, you're going to face a team
03:42that has good defensive lineman at some point, right? Hey, you're going to face a quarterback.
03:46That's better than we'll Levis at some point. Like this is, these are the things you're not
03:50prepared for. And I think really the two biggest non swarm performances that jump into my mind,
03:56if you had to ask me right now, as Jimmy Ward was talking, we're the jets game where you showed up
04:02and like weren't swarmed, like in the second half, the offense was never swarmed like the
04:07entire game, but, or this game where the defense shows up and they're incredibly non swarm, like
04:12in the first half and then in doses in the second half. Okay. Are you ready for primetime? Well,
04:18it seems like on a short week y'all suck. Like, yo, a Thursday night game. Okay. We can't possibly
04:24play the jets after only four days. Yeah. And this was what it felt like to me. And I was
04:30disgusted by it because I'm, I'm sitting there and I'm thinking they can't possibly just be
04:35looking like this because they're, they're kind of, they're kind of out of sorts after a short
04:40week because of a Monday night game at home. Right. That can't possibly be it. And then that's
04:45what it looked like. So it was just, you add it to the list of things that this team's not ready
04:49for and they're clearly not ready for, for primetime playoff, et cetera, et cetera, action.
04:56No question. Here's one more from Jimmy Ward. Why I asked him, I think we got the question in here
05:01with this. Why does the foot come off the gas pedal with you guys? Can you take us down onto
05:05the sideline at all or inside the huddle at all as to why sometimes the foot comes off the gas
05:09pedal a little bit, maybe in these games end up being a little closer than they should be.
05:13Uh, I have really, I really have no clue why, why we get comfortable and why we take our foot
05:22off the gas. Uh, maybe we probably feel like a team is going to quit. Like for me, like I said,
05:28I don't, I don't stop. I don't necessarily, I know it's a four quarter game, so I can't speak
05:32on a team. And that's, that's the thing that we've got to figure out. You know, we got to figure out,
05:37like, how can we play four quarters and finish the game? The only thing I have to go on is what
05:41I observed the head coach say. And what I see on the field, I'm not in the locker room. I've never
05:46been in the locker room, you know, like during the week you have, you're a former player.
05:49So I'm coming at this from the angle of somebody who is a fan of the team, a big fan of the team,
05:54somebody who has, you know, like D'Amico, I've, I've been in management positions before having
06:00to get into the psyche of your people and things like that. All I see is a head coach who talks
06:06about how close these games are and how to do a play here and a play there comes down to a fourth
06:11quarter. You got to finish. Uh, these games are all close. It's an eight and eight league. It's
06:15hard to win in this league, all these things. And I, I just Seth, I feel like sometimes if
06:20that's what you say all the time, you speak things like this into existence when you're
06:25not talking about dominating and maybe they are behind the scenes. That's why I concede.
06:29I'm only seeing the tip of the iceberg, but man, this D'Amico Ryan sure talks about a guy
06:34that the goal is just to be hanging in there in the fourth quarter. And then we got to go finish
06:38and make plays. And I don't know, man, they play like a team whose head coach says we want to be
06:43in there in the four, they games that they're up 20 to three on the bills. I looked at, I go,
06:47well, this is going to be a close game in the fourth quarter because I feel like they've had
06:50a drilled into their heads. How close all these games are in the NFL in the fourth quarter.
06:54Yeah. I mean, yeah, I, I, it's tough because this, this game, let's say Kymie fair Baron pulls off
07:01the impossible and makes a 28 yard field goal. Okay. Yeah. Yeah. Let's say he pulls off the
07:05impossible 30 to 30 do happen. Yeah. That, uh, in, and it's a tie game and then who knows what
07:11happens after that. I think we'd be having the same conversations after this, right? Cause we've
07:16been having them all season long after wins that just, yes, that whatever you want to call it,
07:20killer instinct. This is the problem they lack. They, they are, they have the potential to do
07:26that defensively. They don't always live up to it, but they have the potential. They do not have
07:31that potential offensively. They are just simply not a good off. They haven't been CJ has been one
07:36of the worst quarterbacks in the league over the last six games. Like they're not, they're not a
07:40good offense. So I don't know. I'm, I'm torn. I feel like, yes, there is a, a, a huge, not even
07:46a Colonel, but a large news given that the mentality and that part of it, but I don't know
07:52what you would do with that mentality. You know, I feel like you're walking around with a big old
07:56Colt 45, but no ammunition. You know, like, yeah, look at me. I got a big swagger in like, Oh,
08:02don't hit me. That's what the offense is right now. Boys it's boys versus men.
08:10You know, that, that offensive line, they are little boys out there thrown into a frat party
08:17for the first time in their life. The Titans defensive line was basically forcing them to
08:22butt chug beer all afternoon. And now they've got alcohol poisoning in the hospital. They're bad.
08:26They're bad. And you know what? Stop interviewing Titus Howard after these games.
08:30Just stop. It's not, it's not like he just said, we got to, we got to figure out who we want to be
08:36over these next few weeks. Like, Oh, okay. Now you got to do that. All right. I didn't realize
08:39you were having an existential crisis. We got to figure out who we want to be. I'm just, I,
08:42I just, I don't need to hear from the people who are complete, completely failing at their jobs.
08:47Talk about like, we got to figure out who we got to be. You know, the guy who said they let the
08:50jets game slip away. Like, it's just, I just don't, after a game like that, I just don't
08:55need to hear from him. I guess I can choose not to hit play that's on the video, but I just
09:00see the video and I'm like, Oh, I'm watching him try it. I'm watching the replay of him trying to
09:04hand fight with Jeffrey Simmons or whoever was rushing from the outside.
09:09It's like a little kid trying to swat flies. I'll go back to what I said at the beginning,
09:13which is it, it drives me insane when a team loses and it's so easy for somebody to say,
09:19well, what did you expect to happen? Because everything I did, somebody put, I did a little
09:22preview video since yesterday. I was just a, I barely knew that I was on planet earth, but I
09:27put out like a three. The video was almost dead on accurate, except that every single thing that
09:33I basically was saying, Hey, the Texans need to do this. The Texans didn't do it. And it starts
09:38with those interior defensive line. I thought, all right, Jeffrey Simmons and Devandre sweat
09:43are a big, a big headache and a big problem. Can you just adequately handle these guys?
09:50You don't have to beat them or dominate them or anything. Can you just look adequate versus them?
09:54And no, clearly they could not, I was foolish to even entertain it as a notion. I was just like,
09:58I'm, I'm, I'm as dumb as dumb could be because it was like, I was, it was like I had placed money
10:05on the sun, not rising this morning. You know, like, Oh, that's just somehow, somehow this
10:10absolute certainty, the Texans offensive line getting destroyed by Jeffrey Simmons and Devandre
10:15sweat somehow wasn't going to happen. Right. Right. They were literally the Texans literally
10:20up seven, nothing 18 seconds into the game. I mean, they spotted you, they spotted you a
10:25seven point lead that the Titans like the, you literally started good in the first three plays
10:31of a game. Yeah. Going back to last year versus Indy. Oh yeah. That's right. And Nico, my God,
10:37how many times are we going to, it's a crime. Yeah. It's a crime. What they're doing to Nico
10:41penalties. You're talking to just keep negating these huge Nico plays with idiotic penalties,
10:46procedural crap. It's bad. They were up seven, seven, nothing, 18 seconds into the game by the
10:5011 minute mark in the second quarter. They're down 17, seven. It's just, it's, it's maddening.
10:55Jimmy Ward, to his credit addressed, brought it up on prompted the big play that he let up early
11:00on where he, he, he got pretty technical, but basically he admitted he should have been driving
11:08into the poke. I'm going to be able to come up with that. That's not a physical issue. And I know
11:11like people get upset when they see, Oh, why is it a safety on this guy? Well, he's not manned up
11:15on him, but he should have anticipated the post coming over. And he talked about how it was good.
11:20Brandy loves Jimmy now, because like right before that, I'd been talking about the difference
11:24between veteran players and young players is identifying the greatest threat and Jimmy screwed
11:28up there. He didn't identify. He should have really realized, okay, that's my biggest threat
11:32right there. I got to drive to the post and, and he didn't do it. But there's, there are other times
11:38in the game where the defensive line is the defensive tackles. There's times in that game
11:42with some of those traps, the trap for the touchdown. I was talking to Brandy during the
11:46game about that, about like, you see, these guys aren't, they're not identifying the greatest
11:50threat and the defensive line is getting crushed on some of these plays where yes, you are an
11:55upfield aggressive defense. There's a few little checks and balances to that. You got it. When
12:00you're a team where the defensive lineman just get upfield as fast as possible, there's a few
12:05little key indicators where you got to throttle it down a little bit. And these guys are blazingly
12:11unaware in those situations. And the Titans were able to take advantage of it. Big time,
12:15big time text message, five hour energy fan line. If the Ravens lose tonight,
12:20all the teams who haven't had a bye week yet will be seven and five besides the Colts who
12:25are five and seven. Maybe fatigue is catching up with these teams. I don't want to make excuses
12:29for the Texans. I don't think the lack of a bye week yet is the reason why you don't know whether
12:34or not you want to punt or go forward on fourth down. I don't think it's the reason why you give
12:38a big chunk place. I will say in terms of maybe just the general wear and tear on the team, this
12:43week 14 bye week is for the birds that I think we need to get back to next year to where it's like
12:49week seven or eight. You know what I mean? I was a big bye week denier. I did not want to
12:53acknowledge that it had anything to do with anything. I was, yeah, I believe my own propaganda
12:59too long and it's blown up in my face. It's a good text. It's not why they lost yesterday, but it's
13:04not something I want to experience again. Text message, five hour energy fan line. The Texans
13:09will finish eight and nine. CJ's brain is fried. Management was slow to act in making O-line
13:14changes, specifically Kendrick green. I think they mean Kenyon right there. And it cost us,
13:20it cost us our second pick in the draft Kenyon, Kendrick drugs, whatever it might be. Your left
13:26guards have been garbage, garbage, you know, just absolute garbage. It's just, it's, it's
13:32unbelievable. This is the thing about the whole energy thing. You know what? This is the thing.
13:37It can be an explanation, but it's certainly not an excuse because of the same short week thing
13:41that we were talking about before. I'm, you know what? This is what's so on D'Amico Ryan's like
13:47about this team. Okay. Oh, you've got a short week. It's a Thursday night game. Oh, it's a
13:52short week. You had a Monday night game. Oh, the bye week is late. So what do you do? You just
13:57give into it, you know? Oh, you just give into it. And this is where, okay, everybody indulge me
14:02in being a grumpy old man a little bit. And I'll tell you, this is not, this is, this is a sentiment
14:07that's also shared by young, some young people. When you're a team that jumps deep into the sports
14:11science, the rest and recovery, the GPS tells us this guy needs a break. Ooh, we're going to wait
14:17an extra week to let this guy come back. It invites softness into your organization. It invites
14:22softness. There's a certain hardness and toughness that comes from fighting through crap.
14:27This team, this team point to their damn GPS monitors. They might as well be. Oh,
14:34my legs don't feel ideal. My legs are not, Oh, they're not what they should. I feel they should
14:40be. Oh, maybe I, yeah, no, no. Throw that, throw the damn GPS monitors and you're in the,
14:45in the sports, at least half your sports scientists are too soft. Throw them out of
14:49the building and take them out. That's because it's soft. This is a soft football team right now.
14:53They are soft. Yes. As a team, they're soft. Your field goal kicker is soft. You can't make a 28
14:59yard field goal. That is a great take on the GPS and the sports science. That is phenomenal.
15:07GPS screwed me twice this weekend. Once at a complicated, once in a complicated
15:13interstate exchange and another time in the, in the, in the football game,
15:16just a soft driver. I mean, that's the problem. You're soft.
