00:00Technology is always in a state of flux.

00:03There is always new hardware and programs in the market to cut down on production time

00:08or to enhance or improve existing work products.

00:11Towards this end, the DOST is in the thick of helping MSMEs or startups step up technically,

00:18like in the City of Golden Friendship, as our Rod Laguzad reports.

00:25As part of the ongoing innovations by the Department of Science and Technology,

00:29it is also aimed at helping the public benefit from these advancements,

00:33such as improving the businesses of micro, small, and medium enterprises.

00:37Along the National Science, Technology, and Innovation Week, it promotes entrepreneurship.

00:41The Best Friend Goodies, a company that produces nutritious cookies and ready-to-eat food in Tagayan de Oro City,

00:46is supported by the DOST to help improve their products.

00:49Their cookies are made from ingredients like squash, mongo beans, sweet potato, and coconut,

00:54which are designed to address malnutrition and part of the Department of Education's feeding program.

00:59Under the Small Enterprise Technology Upgrading Program or SETUP,

01:03MSMEs are encouraged to adopt technological innovations to enhance their products or services.

01:08With the help of this DOST program, the company was able to acquire a water retort machine,

01:13which is crucial in manufacturing their ready-to-eat products, especially during natural disasters.

01:24This water retort is familiar to us.

01:26This is also what we use in sardines, in cans.

01:31For us, in Best Friend Goodies, it's only in pouches.

01:35But the principle of technology is there for longer shelf life.

01:41It is available in chicken arroz caldo, champorado, mongo beans, squash, and mixed fruit.

01:47Meanwhile, Agis Aquasports in Opol, Misamis, Oriental has also upgraded the line of boats with their latest fiberglass racers.

01:54With the help from DOST and its SETUP program, and with the use of Computer Numerical Control or CNC router,

02:00a computer-controlled cutting machine designed for viewing various materials like wood, steel, glass, plastic, and more,

02:06production increased and their market expanded with businesses also derived from outside Mindanao.

02:12Our production is faster.

02:16Our cutting is more accurate in the parts of the boats.

02:22And our work is easier.

02:26The first process takes a long time because we came from a manual jigsaw.

02:33Then, the patterns are also manually measured.

02:42Building a 38-foot speedboat which used to take a whole year now only takes around 8 months to complete.
