On his first overseas trip since taking office, Taiwan's president has landed in Hawaii. His first stop? A museum presenting Pacific Island culture -- something both Taiwan and Hawaii share.

00:00This is the Bishop Museum in Honolulu, Hawaii.
00:03And fresh off his nine-hour flight from Taipei,
00:06Taiwan's President Lai Ching-de has made this,
00:08the largest museum in the Pacific,
00:10his first stop of his first overseas trip
00:13since he took office as president.
00:24Earlier, Lai was welcomed by the state's governor
00:27and also Taiwanese people living in Hawaii.
00:31This trip has been labelled an unofficial transit.
00:34China has hit out at the US for hosting Lai,
00:36saying Washington should treat it with utmost caution.
00:40During his two days here in Hawaii,
00:42Lai is also visiting a disaster response centre
00:46and he's expected to meet with local officials,
00:48shoring up that all-important Taiwan-US relationship
00:52as the country transitions from a Biden presidency
00:55to a Trump presidency.
00:57He'll also be looking to reassure Taiwanese back home
01:00amid concerns of what stance Trump will take
01:04when it comes to Taiwan.
