00:00President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. was nervous about the presence of a Russian-attacked submarine in the West Philippine Sea.
00:07But the Philippine Navy explained that it was just a chance to return to their naval base in Vladivostok.
00:13Patrick De Jesus of PTV in the national news.
00:19President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. considered that it is up to him to enter the exclusive economic zone of the country.
00:27This was after a Russian-attacked UFA-490 submarine was spotted on November 28 in the West Philippine Sea,
00:3580 nautical miles from the northern part of Cape Calavite in Occidental, Mindoro.
00:40It was intercepted by the President in the military.
00:44That's very concerning. Any intrusion into the West Philippine Sea of our AEC or our base lines is very worrisome.
00:53According to the Armed Forces of the Philippines, the Philippine Navy's ship BRP Jose Rizal immediately escorted the Russian submarine.
01:01The Navy also deployed aircraft to monitor the movement of the submarine.
01:05According to the AFP, the Russian submarine's crew responded to the radio communication
01:10when it arrived in Malaysia after the military exercise with the Royal Malaysian Navy.
01:17They are just waiting for the right time before continuing their deployment back to their naval base in Vladivostok, Russia.
01:25We were surprised that a Russian submarine was detected.
01:28Because it is not common for a submarine to pass by us.
01:32The good thing is that we were able to respond, our aircraft and ships.
01:37There was no illegal activity that was monitored by the Russian submarine
01:41that was submerged when it passed through the West Philippine Sea.
01:45In the same manner, when our ships, for example, pass through the Exclusive Economic Zone of another country,
01:53they are also given the right of freedom of navigation and innocent passage.
01:58As long as they are not doing anything wrong or violating the laws of that country.
02:03For a maritime law expert, the passage of a Russian submarine is not considered a threat.
02:09It cannot be a threat because it's a submarine on the surface. That's not a threat.
02:13Since it's on the surface, it's actually announcing itself.
