00:00More than 5 million sacks of rice in the country are wasted every year according to a study.
00:07That's why the Department of Agriculture is helping to sell half-rice for food.
00:12Breaking news from Bernadette Reyes.
00:18You can really make your food delicious if you have unli rice in a restaurant or a karenderia.
00:23But sometimes the ending is just a waste of unfinished rice.
00:27In this restaurant, a plastic sack of rice is wasted every day.
00:32In every day, we have half-rice or sometimes one-fourth.
00:41In another study, it was found that more than 6.5 grams of rice is wasted by a Filipino every day.
00:49Even though it's just more than one spoon, if combined, it's equivalent to 255,000 metric tons of rice per year,
00:57or equivalent to more than 5 million sacks.
01:00So if we combine it with all the population during that year,
01:04it can feed 2.79 million Filipinos for a year.
01:08Nanay Rosy feels bad when she sees unfinished rice.
01:13I don't like it. I get angry when it's not finished.
01:16I told them to eat what they can finish.
01:19To avoid food wastage, the Department of Agriculture is supporting
01:24the program to have half-rice serving in restaurants and karenderia like this.
01:29For the record, the Secretary wants to revive the bill that offers half-rice.
01:35For example, the 255,000 metric tons at Php 43 per kilo,
01:42that will translate to about Php 3.6 billion worth of rice annually.
01:50So that's a big fund.
01:52As of now, according to PhilRice, there are 47 local ordinances
01:57for the sale of half-rice in restaurants.
02:00But the company says it's a nationwide target.
02:03Even to the government agencies,
02:05before there's an executive order to promote the sale of half-rice
02:09to restaurants across the country.
02:11It's in favor of those who can afford to eat half-rice.
02:14It's just right. It's not too much.
02:16Most of the restaurants, there's a lot of food left.
02:19It's a waste. I'll throw away the food.
02:21But while there's no EO, according to PhilRice,
02:23especially on the left and right, the preparations and reunions...
02:27We don't want to be blind. We just want to get a little bit.
