00:00Just three wins so far for the Patriots, what's your feelings on what you've seen with them
00:06so far this season?
00:07Yeah, I just haven't done enough to win very many games on any level.
00:10You know, I couldn't, they had trouble on defense, one of the last ranked teams on offense
00:16if not the bottom rank, missed some key field goals and some, you know, kicking plays as
00:21well.
00:22So I'd say all three areas of the game just haven't been, you know, good enough to win.
00:25I still got a couple games left against Buffalo, right?
00:27They have a bye week this week, so maybe they can get a few things straightened out.
00:31But it's just been a pretty inconsistent year, just haven't been able to do enough to win
00:34when they needed to.
00:35How have these guys played for you?
00:36Do you feel for them in this situation or have you just moved on in your head?
00:39No, there are a lot of people there that, you know, very close to, a lot of them that
00:42I brought there.
00:43Especially defensively, almost all those players are re-signed and most all the offensive skill
00:49players too.
00:50So it's, you know, it's hard to see them, you know, going through that type of a season.
00:54There's nothing I can do about it.
00:55I mean, just, you know, sit back and watch it.
00:57But of course, yeah, I feel bad for a lot of those guys.
01:00But, you know, especially the defensive players.
01:02I know those guys work hard, they're tough, and they care and they put a lot into it.
01:06It's the National Football League.
01:07It's very competitive.
01:08You gotta find a way to stand up to the competition and that's a challenge for every team.
01:15Bill Belichick on the Let's Go podcast with Jim Gray.
01:20Second time this year we've heard him say he feels sorry for the guys on defense.
01:23Yeah, yep.
01:24He made that pretty clear.
01:25Which, you know, he was a very touchy-feely guy when he was here.
01:28Always very outward with his emotions.
01:31Feels for the guys on defense.
01:33Interesting from Bill Belichick.
01:34Some pointed criticism there of the Patriots coaching staff.
01:37We'll get into it on Jones and Keith on WEEI Tear Tuesday.
01:42Tommy Tuesday.
01:43We'll get to Kiefer Madness at 1245.
01:45But joining us right now on what's effectively a Patriots Friday, on a Tuesday, it's the
01:49bye week, is Patriots defensive lineman Dietrich Wise.
01:52He's brought to you by Shaw's and Star Market, perfecting the art of fresh.
01:56Dietrich, how we doing this week?
01:57I'm doing wonderful.
01:58How are you doing?
01:59We're doing great.
02:00We know you always have questions for us.
02:02We'll get to those a little later on in the interview, but I wanted to start with a question
02:07for you about what we just played from Bill Belichick.
02:09That's the second time this year in one of his many media outlets that he said he feels
02:15sorry for you guys on defense or feels for you guys on defense.
02:18I was just curious if you had any reaction to that from Bill.
02:21No, no reaction.
02:24I feel like he's expressing how he feels about certain situations, and that's how he feels.
02:33How do you feel, Dietrich, about the defense?
02:35You know, you guys were obviously in this game, one point defeat, and it was just that
02:40last drive where the Colts were able to put an 80-yard drive together and convert on three
02:46fourth downs as well as getting the two-point conversion.
02:48So just take us through that drive and how you guys feel after that.
02:52Yeah, you know, definitely wanted to get off the field.
02:57I had the opportunity to get off the field.
02:59I should have got off the field.
03:01So we know where we went wrong during the game, and it's up to us to change it.
03:08You said you know where you went wrong.
03:09Where did you go wrong, specifically?
03:10I mean, I know you want to get off the field, but where specifically?
03:14Yeah, on that last, when you have a team in third down, the main thing is to stop them.
03:21Whatever the two or three third downs that they converted, it was many different things
03:25that we needed to do and didn't.
03:28So our main thing, I know I'm sorry I'm redundant here, was three and outs on that last drive.
03:35The best thing we actually did was three and outs.
03:37The second best thing is to not let them score.
03:42We talked to you prior to playing against Anthony Richardson, one of the bigger, stronger
03:47quarterbacks in the league.
03:49What were the challenges going up against a guy that big, that fast?
03:53He does, like I said earlier, he does a great job getting the ball out, getting the ball
03:59to his receivers, throwing the ball.
04:01And then if that's ever taken away or he feels like he needs to put a game in his hands,
04:07he has the ability to run.
04:09And we knew that going into the game, and that was one of our focus points.
04:13Talking to Patriots defensive lineman Deitrich Wise, he joins us here on Jones and Keefe
04:18on WEEI.
04:19I'm sure you've seen the hit on Trevor Lawrence by now, Aziz Al-Shayer suspended three games
04:24by the NFL.
04:26How do you balance that?
04:27When you're going against quarterbacks like you mentioned, Anthony Richardson, these big
04:31physical athletic specimens, how do you balance going for the hit when a guy's sliding versus,
04:38you know, leaning out on a play where now quarterbacks can tend to take advantage of
04:42that on the sideline or kind of fake going down?
04:45How do you balance playing on edge but also being disciplined to avoid injuring a quarterback
04:49like that?
04:50Most definitely.
04:52To be transparent, I have not seen the play.
04:58I usually don't really watch a lot of football after the game, I'm kind of just sending myself
05:03and my family, so I didn't get to see anything after our game.
05:08So just to put that on the record, second, with that being said, I know quarterback slide
05:17is a very tough split decision sometimes.
05:24It's been multiple times I've seen quarterbacks slide and they have that halo, which if you
05:30touch them, it's a flag, that's the other quarterback slide, you hit them and we get
05:35up and we just keep on moving.
05:37It's a very gray area.
05:39We know we're not supposed to, but at the heat of the moment, like I said, I do not,
05:44I did not see the play.
05:45So I'm only talking about plays outside of that play because I did not see that play.
05:50So I'm letting them once again, but it's a very gray area sometimes when the quarterback
05:56slides, you have to be very careful when you're approaching a quarterback and trying to engage
06:01it and it's just one of those tough situations.
06:05Some quarterbacks slide late, some quarterbacks slide early.
06:09It's all about just that split decision, what you're going to do.
06:12Do you guys feel like you tackle enough in practices?
06:15No, you don't really tackle in practice.
06:19It's all like in the bags, hitting the dummies, definitely as D linemen, we're the only position
06:26on the field, in my opinion, that doesn't complete their job.
06:34We hit the guys, we make our moves, we share blocks, but we never tackle, we never finish
06:40on the ground.
06:41So that's one thing that as D linemen, we have to make sure that when we do tackle and
06:46drills, we make sure that we hone in on them, whether it's bad work, whether it's just the
06:53tackle, whatever it is.
06:55How challenging is that?
06:56I mean, I know player safety is very important and it's a long season and they keep adding
07:01games to it.
07:03I'm not saying everybody should be smashing at each other all week in practice, but if
07:07you go all week and you're not really doing it and then come game day, you guys are all
07:11expected to make every tackle, make tackles cleanly.
07:14It just seems like the less padded practice has got to be more difficult for the defense,
07:20certainly than the offense.
07:24Less padded practice is more difficult.
07:25I don't think that really plays a factor into it, having more or less padded practices.
07:33I think padded practices help you get the rhythm, the feel for the game.
07:38But as far as on the field, I think, I guess I don't really understand your question.
07:49I'm sorry.
07:50No, I'm just wondering if not being able to tackle or have a lot of contact
07:55during practices and then come game day, does that sort of maybe explain why there are missed
08:03tackles or there are penalties because people don't have the technique down, all that kind
08:07of thing?
08:08Yeah, it's a two-sided conversation.
08:13Guys are really good at avoiding tackles and then other guys are either really good at
08:18making tackles or not good at making tackles.
08:20Tackling comes down to techniques and fundamentals, honestly.
08:23Twerking a guy up, shuffling in, making a hit, wrapping up, grabbing claws, grabbing
08:28legs, and that sort of shit.
08:31I guess I shouldn't make the same mistake I assumed earlier that you had seen the Lawrence hit.
08:35I don't know if you saw what went down at Michigan and Ohio State after the game, but
08:39I'll catch you up to speed.
08:41Michigan wins the game.
08:43You did see that?
08:45I did not see that.
08:46Oh, you did not see that.
08:47I'm sorry.
08:48Okay, so what happened is Michigan planted a flag at midfield after beating Ohio State
08:51in a rivalry game.
08:52You went to Arkansas.
08:53LSU, I think, is your big rival.
08:55How would you handle, I don't know, LSU coming out and planting their flag at midfield?
09:00Who won?
09:02Who won?
09:04I'm sorry.
09:06So the game was in Ohio State.
09:13They were big favorites.
09:14Michigan won the game and then Michigan took a Michigan flag, planted it at the 50-yard
09:19line to celebrate, and then Ohio State players started fighting them.
09:23They were fans.
09:24Disrespectful.
09:25Disrespectful.
09:26Yeah, it was a whole thing.
09:27Yeah, that's tough.
09:28That's the real tough situation.
09:29First of all, the game is over.
09:30If you wanted to do all the fighting, you should have done it during the game, had the
09:38energy towards winning the game.
09:40Second of all, I can see both sides of Ohio taking disrespect at the end of the day.
09:46If you want to get back at them, work super hard next year to beat them, make sure they
09:50never do it again.
09:51You just feel.
09:52That's what I would say to my guys.
09:54You know, after today...
09:55Do what you want.
09:56Do what you don't want.
09:57Yeah.
09:58Go ahead.
09:59Go ahead.
10:00Sorry.
10:01I'm not going to hear what you're saying.
10:02I was going to say, you guys get the bye week coming up, so after today, you'll have some
10:04time off.
10:05You got any plans for the week?
10:07A bunch of R&R.
10:11Three R's.
10:12Rest, recovery, and reflection.
10:13That's it.
10:14Okay.
10:16I know you usually like to put us on the spot.
10:18You like to reverse roles here.
10:20So, what, you got any questions for us before you hit the bye week?
10:22Yeah, that's a good question.
10:25Who do you think is going to win between Texas and Georgia?
10:29Texas.
10:30Georgia.
10:31And why?
10:32I don't know.
10:33I just...
10:34Georgia's overrated.
10:35You see what they...
10:36I went the opposite of Keith.
10:37That's all.
10:38That's my instinct, Dietrich, is just to disagree with them.
10:39That's all.
10:40I don't know.
10:41I thought Georgia has been kind of down this year.
10:42They went to eight overtimes against Georgia Tech.
10:43So, I'll take Texas.
10:45Ooh, did Georgia beat Texas earlier this year?
10:49Did they?
10:50That's a thumbs up back there for Nick.
10:54Honestly, you stumped us on that one.
10:55Did that happen?
10:56I don't know.
10:57I guess so.
10:58Yeah.
10:59So, I mean, even though they went eight overtimes with the team they know, you think the team
11:07they don't know, they already beat them once.
11:09You think they can do it again?
11:10Yeah, Keith.
11:11Hey, Keith.
11:12I'll take Texas.
11:13Sounds like Dietrich is with me.
11:14I'm taking Texas.
11:15Yeah.
11:16In your face.
11:17That's fine.
11:18I'm just asking questions here.
11:19I'm on the other side of the phone now.
11:21It's nice to be in charge of the questions, isn't it?
11:23It's nice to run the interview.
11:24You don't really...
11:25You don't have to be put on the spot.
11:26It is nice to do that.
11:27All right.
11:28Well, Dietrich, we appreciate it.
11:29Well, now I know Keith says Texas.
11:30Yep.
11:31Right?
11:32Yep.
11:33Yep.
11:34Yep.
11:35Yep.
11:36Jones is going Georgia.
11:37Yeah.
11:38Very good.
11:39Yeah.
11:40We'll...
11:41Go Georgia.
11:42After the game.
11:43Well, Dietrich, we always appreciate the time.
11:44All right.
11:45Thank you so much.
11:46No problem.
11:47You have a great one.
11:48All right.
11:49You too.
11:50Dietrich Wise of the Patriots joins us here on what's effectively a Patriots Friday.
11:53Yeah.
11:54On a Tuesday.
11:55Patriots hitting the bye week.
11:56So, there you go.
11:57You got Texas on that one, Keith.
11:58They did.
11:59So, that was their lone loss this year.
12:00Big longhorn guy.
12:01Texas only lost once.
12:02At home to Georgia, yeah.
12:03It wasn't competitive at all.
12:04Big longhorn guy.
12:05What?
12:06No, I have like...
12:07I've liked Texas this year.
12:08I have.
12:09I bet A&M over the weekend that it didn't go so hot, so I was...
12:10Oh.
12:11I feel like I got kind of...
12:12I got kind of robbed on a backdoor cover in that game, if we're being honest.
12:16They're at the one.
12:17They didn't run it in.
12:18It was a whole thing.
12:19I think the last bet...
12:20I mean, they tried to.
12:21The last bet I probably won was...
12:22Let me look this up.
12:23September 7th, when Texas beat Michigan.
12:26That was back at Michigan, when Michigan was ranked 10th.
12:28Yeah.
12:29I could smell.
12:30I could smell.
12:31I'm like, this is not a good team.
12:32I think that was the last bet I won, though, so...
12:34Nice.
12:35Take that into account.
12:36Do you think Dietrich is going to watch that game, or do you think we're going to have
12:37to tell him what happened in it after the fact?
12:38Probably tell him what happened after the fact.
12:39Yeah, we'll catch him up to speed on what happened in that game.
12:41That might not be a bad feature, is we just sort of recap events to Dietrich-wise.
12:46Like world events?
12:47Anything.
12:48I can explain to him like the last movie I saw, just like start to finish, that Jones
12:52can tell him about like a game that just happened.
12:53Yeah.
12:54You see the Celtics last night?
12:55He's like, no.
12:56I'm like, well, all right.
12:57Sit down.
12:58Peyton Pritchard was on fire, Dietrich.
12:59You should have seen it.
13:00That's fine.
13:01He doesn't...
13:02It was Peyton Pritchard.
13:03He doesn't need to watch sports.
13:04Look, the guy's got stuff going on.
13:05That's okay.
13:06We're my practice.
13:07RRR.
13:09Rest, recovery, reflection.
13:10The man's got something going on.
13:11I have the four R's.
13:12Oh.
13:13Rest, recovery, reflection, rum.
13:14Dark rum?
13:15Spiced rum?
13:16Whatever it might be.
13:17Nice.
13:18Were my practice questions really bad?
13:21Be honest.
13:22Were they bad?
13:23No, I understood it.
13:24He was super confused by them.
13:25I think...
13:26I wasn't trying to stump him.
13:27No, I think he just...
13:28My read on that was he got a little worried about sounding like he was making too much
13:31of an excuse.
13:32Oh, and I'm not.
13:34That's more around the league.
13:35That's more of a general thing.
13:36Every week, you see bad tackling.
13:39That wasn't even a direct Patriot shot.
13:41Maybe he didn't want it to be an excuse, but think about that.
13:44If you don't do something all week long, and then you're expected to do it at the highest
13:50level on Sunday, and then you don't, like, oh, come on.
13:54Do better at tackling.
13:55We're not going to do it again until next Sunday, but I don't know.
13:57I feel like that'd be difficult for those guys.
13:59Right.
14:00But you're right.
14:01You don't want to make an excuse.
14:02You sit here silently, no takes all week, and then you say you got to do it every Sunday?
14:06The hottest take possible on Sunday.
14:08Can I polish off some takes?
14:09No, no.
14:10No, no, no.
14:11You can't.
14:12Ease my way in.
14:13Think.
14:14Work my way through.
14:15Workshop some takes.
14:16Yep.
14:17Tip your toe in.
14:18You can't just jump right in on a Sunday.
14:19I got it.
14:20So there you go.
14:21That's Dietrich Wise.
14:22If you missed any of that, Odyssey app.
14:23A-U-D-A-C-Y.
14:24He always likes to put us on the spot with a question there at the end.
14:25Oh, yeah.
14:26A bit of a curveball, but we pick sides now.
14:28Keeps a longhorn.
14:29I'm a bulldog.
14:30Rooting interest.
14:31Hook him horns.
14:32Yeah.
14:33Me and Matthew McConaughey.
14:34You should choose your sides accordingly.
