Japan sake-brewing joins UNESCO intangible heritage

UNESCO adopts on Dec. 4, 2024 traditional techniques to produce Japanese sake brewing in its intangible cultural heritage list, a move the country hopes will boost new generations’ interest and consumption of the ancient beverage. The adoption was approved in a meeting of the Intergovernmental Committee for the Safeguarding of Intangible Cultural Heritage, which was held in Paraguay.

00:00Congratulations Agana, we move on to the next element presented by Granada.
00:30I am honoured to express my sincerest gratitude for the description of the traditional knowledge
00:53and skills of sake-making in Japan.
00:57By being recognised internationally by this mechanism, that will renew the interests
01:06of the ordinary Japanese people in this area, and that could lead to more momentum of transmitting
01:16these skills and know-hows to the next generations.
01:20And also internationally, we are very pleased to see the increased amount of sake exports abroad.
