A Place to Call Home Winter Appeal: Lennie Ware visits the Ace of Clubs
Transcript
00:00Hi, it's Lenny Ware here. I'm about to learn about an incredible organisation helping those in need this winter, right here in Clapham.
00:09Ace of Clubs is a day centre for the homeless and vulnerable, providing access to a warm space and everything from clothing and showers to hot meals.
00:18Hi. Hello, lovely to meet you. Hi, I'm Lenny. Hi, welcome to Ace of Clubs. Thank you, thank you.
00:24We support people experiencing homelessness. We welcome everybody. They are provided then with a hot meal.
00:30We make sure we've got vegetables, protein, carbohydrates. They come and have a nutritious meal.
00:34And these are people who may otherwise not have got the chance to have a hot meal on that day.
00:39Hi Ishmael, what are you cooking today? So I'm making lunch. I've got omelettes, avocado on toast, onion chicken with rice.
00:49Ace of Clubs is supported by The Felix Project, a London-based food redistribution charity who receive funding from Comic Relief and Sainsbury's.
00:59So where does all the food come from? It comes from supermarkets, from farmers, from other producers.
01:05They usually end up in a landfill, but now through this project and other companies like this, they're just helping out the communities, donating to organisations, keep people surviving.
01:15And this is just one of the many organisations that Comic Relief and The Standard are supporting this winter through their A Place to Call Home appeal.
01:23In the winter, it's freezing today, the demand must be much greater.
01:28Yeah, so in the winter, our numbers are getting really high. I mean, we're up to 150, 200 people now.
01:33For us, it's so important that people have a space to go. For many people, you know, they haven't spoken to anyone that day, they might feel isolated.
01:40We are here as a centre hub where people can go and find a safe, warm space to get food and get help.
01:48So what I've seen here today is so completely brilliant. No one should be without a warm space, a hot meal and somewhere to come and feel a sense of community and get access to some of the help that they need.
02:02So to support places like this, give what you can and donate now.
