This podcast phenom started creating content with one goal: to make money. Bobbi Althoff tested countless angles, including life as a nanny and house cleaning videos, before em- barking on the style that would ultimately skyrocket her to success: parody videos about being a “bad mom.” In 2021 she posted her first viral video on TikTok, where she joked about naming her daughter Richard because she wanted a son. She hit 3 million followers in early 2023 (she now counts 13 million) and that same year launched The Really Good Podcast, which became known for her deadpan and sarcastic interviews with folks such as Mark Cuban, Shaquille O’Neal and Jason Derulo. In 2024, Althoff signed a year-long deal with Studio71, a Beverly Hills–based content shop that helps digital creators sell ads and otherwise monetize their output. Over the 12 months ending in August 2024, she earned approximately $2.9 million between this deal and brand partnerships. “I don’t know how it keeps working for me,”she says. “I’m just taking it one interview at a time.”

00:00Be consistent and be vulnerable.
00:02I feel like that still remains true for a lot of people I see blow up,
00:07but they're just really authentic.
00:10I've always just been myself.
00:16I'm here with Bobbi Althoff, creator, influencer, podcast host, internet celebrity.
00:23I don't know about all that.
00:24Thanks for joining us.
00:26Thank you for having me.
00:28Bobbi, give me a 30-second pitch about what you do and what your brand is.
00:35What I do.
00:36I have a podcast.
00:38I just travel and interview people.
00:42And I take care of my kids when I'm not doing that.
00:45And I'm just myself.
00:48And myself is a weird person.
00:50So I think that I stand out because of that.
00:53So this is how you are on your podcast, and this is how you always are?
00:57Yeah, mostly.
00:58I feel like if I get really comfortable, I'm a little different.
01:01But in unfamiliar situations or settings, I'm like this.
01:05How many kids do you have?
01:06Two.
01:07Yeah. Do you have any?
01:08I do. I have two kids as well.
01:09How old are they?
01:10Eight and 10.
01:12Okay.
01:12How about you?
01:13Two and four.
01:14All right. So you're in it a little more.
01:16I am.
01:18What did you do before you started your show?
01:21For a few years before, I was on TikTok, just doing brand deals posting.
01:25Before that, I was a nanny.
01:26Before that, I worked at Jersey Mike's.
01:29Before that, I worked at Sonic.
01:32What's your favorite Jersey Mike's sub?
01:34Number 13.
01:35What is that?
01:36Mike's Way.
01:37The Italian sandwich.
01:38I will never forget it.
01:40Do you have...
01:41Did you study media, journalism, anything like that?
01:45I took a journalism class in community college.
01:50Okay.
01:51Yeah.
01:52When you started doing TikToks, what sort of things were you doing?
01:55Just parodies and satire.
01:59I think I first started...
02:01I was just trying anything to grow my page.
02:03So I was trying...
02:05I would post how to become a nanny and that wouldn't get views.
02:07So then I would post videos of me cleaning my house
02:11and people didn't care for that either.
02:13So then I started just pretending to be a bad mom
02:17and I posted videos about that.
02:18What does a bad mom do?
02:20I don't know if it was...
02:21It was just so the account...
02:22I think that my bio was parody of a bad mom.
02:25Okay.
02:25And I would just say things like,
02:27I'm getting my one-year-old braces
02:30because her two front teeth are growing in crooked
02:33and just stupid things that I would think of.
02:35What did the community think about that stuff?
02:37Did they...
02:38Some people think you were being serious?
02:39Yeah, that's why it went viral.
02:41But there was enough people that would follow me
02:43because they knew it was just not real.
02:46Do you know what was the...
02:47Was there one moment or one video
02:49that kind of went viral and changed everything for you?
02:52Yeah, it was a video of me.
02:55Like the biggest in the beginning that I had
02:57was a video of me.
02:59Well, there were two.
03:00One of them kind of pushed me to a million followers,
03:03but then the other one got me...
03:05I don't...
03:05More fans, if that makes sense.
03:07Like one of them got me followers,
03:08the other got me fans on social media.
03:12But...
03:13Tell that difference to me
03:14because I think everyone thinks of fans as followers.
03:16I want to hear that kind of...
03:17Yeah.
03:19What separates a fan from a follower.
03:21Or like not even just an engaged person
03:24who enjoys your content,
03:25but you can have 20 million followers
03:28and get no engagement
03:30or have people that just don't really care about you
03:32or have any connection to you as a creator,
03:35but you can have a million followers
03:38and have way more than someone with 10 million,
03:40just people who actually care about you.
03:42So the first video went viral,
03:43but people didn't care about me, I guess.
03:47But the next big one I had,
03:49I don't even remember what it was,
03:51but it was like a few months after that.
03:52And that got more engagement,
03:53people liking or reacting and commenting.
03:55Yeah, just following me, like, yeah, getting...
03:57Yeah, following me on Instagram,
03:58trying to just learn more about me.
04:00What was the first viral video?
04:01It was a video of me holding my daughter at the time.
04:05Well, no, she's still my daughter, but...
04:06Yeah, holding her is enough, yes.
04:07Holding my daughter.
04:09And I was like, pretending her name was Richard.
04:12And I said that I named her Richard
04:14because I wanted a boy,
04:15but I had a girl.
04:16Okay.
04:17And I was like, so I named her Richard anyway.
04:19And it just got, I think, 4 million views.
04:21Just that?
04:22Yeah.
04:22And what was your reaction when you saw it?
04:24Like, look down at some of those numbers.
04:26Oh, I was like, I gotta keep posting.
04:28So I started posting probably five,
04:3010 times a day for the next two years.
04:34Can you tell when something,
04:35like when you made that video,
04:36can you tell, like, this is gonna be a big hit?
04:39Yeah.
04:39Or you can tell when it happens?
04:40Pretty quickly.
04:42Like, I would say within the first few hours,
04:46you can tell if it's gonna be really big
04:48or if it's just gonna get some views.
04:50Gotcha.
04:50But when you're making it yourself, like...
04:51No.
04:52You have no idea.
04:52It's kind of like, you just take as many shots as you get.
04:55Yeah.
04:55Okay.
04:56Yeah.
04:56That's why I would post 10 times
04:58and delete nine of them.
04:59Okay.
05:00But my goal for the first year
05:01of once I started getting views
05:03and getting followers was that every single day,
05:06I had to have one video that I posted
05:08that got a million views.
05:09So I would keep trying and trying and trying
05:12until I got one to hit a million.
05:13And if I didn't, I was, I felt disappointed.
05:16Did you do a lot of, like, some people, like,
05:19try to, like, read the algorithm and statistics
05:21and kind of game it?
05:21Did you look at any data and stuff or just...
05:23No, I would just make a million videos
05:26and post them and see what would happen.
05:29What was your, what kind of was your, like,
05:31your aim when you started posting on TikTok?
05:33Like, where did you see it going?
05:35So I missed the YouTube wave
05:38and I didn't know, I didn't have any other opportunities
05:40to get rich.
05:40So I thought what I saw was, like,
05:42I need to make money and this could do it.
05:45How do you make money now?
05:46Well, now with my podcast, but for a long time,
05:49I made it with just brand deals off of TikTok.
05:51Okay.
05:51How did you, what, give me an example,
05:53what sort of brands would work with you?
05:55I feel like I would do a lot of children things.
05:59So I did one ad for this necklace
06:01where I showed an ultrasound of my baby.
06:03Okay.
06:06Like cleaning products, things like that.
06:09I was a housewife and a stay-at-home mom.
06:11So just stuff that was in that realm.
06:14And how much, like those early days,
06:15like how much were you bringing in a year?
06:17I want to say that for those two years,
06:20I brought in at least 300,000 each year.
06:23Okay, right, very good.
06:23Yeah.
06:24Growing up, you said you were weird.
06:27You said that, I'm not saying that.
06:29I'm not putting words in your mouth.
06:31What, have you always been funny?
06:33Do people think you were like,
06:35you're doing comedy skits.
06:38Growing up, were you always a funny person?
06:40I don't know.
06:41I feel like if I said I was a funny person,
06:43people would be like, she's not funny.
06:45So I would never call myself funny,
06:47but I've always been the same person.
06:49And I've always wanted to act
06:53or have some type of leg in Hollywood, kind of.
06:56So I felt, my family always says,
06:58but if anybody in our family was going to end up
07:01where I ended up, it would be me.
07:02Because I was the most driven towards that.
07:05I would take acting classes when I was really little.
07:08And I was just always in front of cameras at home.
07:11Me and my little sister would just,
07:13she would record me just being weird.
07:16What advice do you have to people
07:17that want to become influencers?
07:19Obviously, you worked really hard at it.
07:20And you said you're doing those goals,
07:2310 videos plus a day.
07:25What advice do you have?
07:26Be consistent and be vulnerable.
07:29I feel like that still remains true
07:31for a lot of people I see blow up,
07:33but they're just really authentic.
07:36And yeah, I think people like to watch other people
07:40that they resonate with.
07:41So for me, I've always just been myself.
07:44And even if that's talking about things
07:47that I'm insecure about or any of that,
07:49just being transparent with everyone
07:51and just post a lot.
07:52And you can fail a million times.
07:54I still fail at what I have right now.
07:58So no matter how big you get,
08:00you can still put a video out that gets no views.
08:02Gotcha.
08:03Tell me about the podcast.
08:04How did this come to be?
08:05I remember the first time I noticed
08:07it was the famous Drake in bed podcast.
08:11How did the podcast get off the ground?
08:14So yeah, before that, I will,
08:19it was, I think I started in April
08:21and I filmed that episode at the end of June.
08:24In April, I saw a video of this girl
08:27talking about how she makes a lot of money on her podcast.
08:30And I was like, I should make a podcast
08:32so I can make a lot of money.
08:33Because I was tired of making TikToks every day
08:35and doing brand deals.
08:36And it wasn't making, it wasn't climbing.
08:39I was making a steady paycheck,
08:41but it wasn't climbing.
08:42And I wanted to do something
08:43that could make me more money.
08:44And what was your idea for the podcast?
08:47So my favorite podcast is How I Built This with Guy Raz.
08:52Yeah, that's one of my favorites too.
08:53I love that.
08:54So I would listen to every episode
08:56because I've always wanted to do something.
08:58And I just love listening to founder stories.
09:01So I knew I could never be an interviewer like him,
09:04but I was, since I loved that podcast,
09:05it was inspired by it,
09:06but it was supposed to be a parody of it.
09:08So it was just, I knew I could never do it
09:10as well as he does it.
09:12So it was going to be called So You're Rich.
09:15And I was going to interview rich people
09:17and just figure out how they got rich
09:18so I could become rich too.
09:20But really early on, I was like,
09:22I knew I wanted to interview celebrities.
09:24And I was like, what celebrities are going to do?
09:25So you're rich.
09:27And my very first interview
09:29got sent to my team at the time.
09:32And they accidentally sent me an email thread
09:34that was not meant to be seen by me
09:35where they were just talking
09:37about how horrible my podcast was
09:38and how it would never go anywhere
09:40and I should just be myself
09:41and not be in this character.
09:44What was the character?
09:45Obviously, you're obviously famous
09:47for your sarcasm, deadpan.
09:50Was it that sort of thing?
09:51Yeah, they thought that was so stupid.
09:53Was that a character?
09:54Kind of.
09:55It was just an exaggerated version of me, I guess.
09:57Okay.
09:58So yeah, but it was a character.
09:59I would, as soon as the cameras go off,
10:01it's just a normal conversation
10:03between me and the person.
10:04But then cameras go on
10:05and I would like begin to act like that.
10:07Who was the first person you had on the podcast?
10:11Her name is Colleen Bollinger, Miranda Sings.
10:15I, it was titled So You're Rich
10:17when I interviewed her.
10:18Okay.
10:18Yeah.
10:19And I would just be like, so you're rich.
10:22How do I do that too?
10:23And I would just figure out,
10:24like ask her questions
10:25that most people wouldn't ask rich people.
10:27Okay.
10:28But yeah, then they said that was a bad idea.
10:30So then I switched it to The Really Good Podcast.
10:32How did those early people on the show,
10:36your early guests,
10:37how did they react to kind of that character?
10:39They knew that it was coming.
10:40She was a, she is a comedian.
10:43So I think she really knew
10:45and she understood it
10:46and she decided it was going to be big.
10:49And then I started paying people to be,
10:52well, I'd pay people to kind of spot
10:54and help me connect with celebrities
10:56because I didn't know how else to get that.
10:58So you had like booking, people booking?
10:59No, I would say comment and tag a celebrity.
11:02And if that celebrity replies
11:04and it leads to me getting an interview with them,
11:06I'll give you $300.
11:08Okay.
11:08So somebody tagged Funny Marco
11:11and then I posted that on my story on Instagram.
11:14I said, Funny Marco,
11:17if you want this girl to get $300,
11:19you need to be on my podcast.
11:21And his podcast is What Led to Drink.
11:23Oh, wow, okay.
11:24Yeah.
11:25Because that one went very viral.
11:26So you're kind of like guilting celebrities into...
11:28Yeah, exactly what I was doing.
11:30I'd never heard that.
11:31That marketing was really good.
11:32I knew I couldn't afford the celebrity.
11:35And they don't really,
11:35they don't do that for money.
11:37So I was like, what do I do?
11:38But you can build them into it.
11:40When you launched your podcast,
11:41how many TikTok followers did you have?
11:44I think a little over 3 million.
11:46Did that following help you get guests
11:49and help you get the podcast?
11:51Probably the first few, yeah.
11:52Like Marco probably would have never,
11:54if I just had no following,
11:56would have seen it, yeah.
11:57And then you did Drake.
11:58Yeah.
11:59And did that kind of,
12:00how did that affect?
12:01Oh, then my life changed immediately.
12:05Immediately, as soon as it was out,
12:08I got signed to WME that week.
12:11The week before, when I put a clip up,
12:12I got signed to WME so that they were there
12:15and they helped me post the actual interview.
12:18I got a manager.
12:20I let go of my old team.
12:22Didn't believe in me.
12:24Yeah, they were talking trash on the email.
12:26And they were so shocked when I let them go.
12:28But let them go, got a new team,
12:30got a business manager.
12:32Never had one of those before.
12:33Never needed one.
12:35Got a lawyer.
12:36My life completely changed.
12:38I had so many people that I paid after that.
12:41How do you now book guests on the podcast?
12:45Like I assume you have an extremely popular show.
12:48I'm sure there's a ton of inbound people
12:49who want to come in.
12:50How do you find people?
12:52How do you say yes, no?
12:53What's, how's that like?
12:55So I have a booker and he does a lot of outreach,
12:58but also if celebrities DM me still,
13:01or I DM them,
13:02there's still a lot happening
13:04that I just find on my own.
13:06How do you prep for a show?
13:07I don't.
13:09At all.
13:09I didn't prep for this either,
13:11but I kind of had regrets about that when I sat down.
13:13I was like, I should have read that list
13:14my PR team sent me
13:15because I don't know what's gonna happen.
13:16What was the list where the PR team sent you?
13:18I don't know.
13:19I didn't look.
13:20I just saw it and then I scrolled away.
13:22I was like, that's a lot of reading.
13:23So, but like, do you,
13:24when you, do you book people
13:25that you kind of know about them?
13:27Or like sometimes you have no idea?
13:29No, sometimes I have no idea.
13:31A lot of times I have no idea
13:33and then I just go in and learn stuff about them
13:35and ask them what I'm curious about knowing.
13:38How do you make money now?
13:39My podcast, I still brand deals,
13:41but those are my podcast.
13:44Podcasts make a lot of money.
13:46They do.
13:47But like, is that through like, do people,
13:48do you have a deal with the podcast?
13:50Do people say, oh, I want to sponsor this series?
13:52Like how does that work?
13:52I have a pretty good product placement deal.
13:56So just by carrying the,
13:58I mean, anybody who watches my stuff
14:00sees that I always have Alani New and Prime in it.
14:02And then I have a company that owns my ad space.
14:08So I do about like three or four ads per episode
14:14every week.
14:16So I've been listening to a lot of your shows, Bobbi,
14:17and not only do you have great guests,
14:19but you take the podcast out of the podcast studio.
14:22Sometimes I've, you know,
14:23you've done an interview on the tennis court, in the gym.
14:26I heard one, you went to like a haunted museum
14:28in Vegas with Matt Reif.
14:29Matt Reif was under 30 last year and spoke.
14:31He's a good friend of Forbes.
14:33How do you choose these venues?
14:35I mostly let the guest pick.
14:38I would say nine out of 10 times,
14:40I just ask them where they want to do it.
14:42And yeah, Matt chose a haunted house in Vegas at midnight
14:46and it was dark.
14:47And by the way, that really made me mad
14:49is that the camera didn't pick up that it was dark.
14:51It looked like it was bright
14:53and I was just being a baby,
14:54but it was so scary.
14:55Yeah, I had to tone, you were screaming.
14:57I had to turn down the headphones
14:58because it was like blasting.
14:59I was screaming the whole time.
15:00I was so scared.
15:02Do you get noticed outside of when you like
15:07out and about in the streets, you get noticed?
15:08Yeah.
15:09What is that like?
15:11I mean, that's nice recognition, I guess.
15:14It's weird knowing that people know who I am.
15:20The good part of being a creator influencer
15:22is you have all these people following you.
15:23Is there a downside to that fame
15:28and the people feel really familiar with you
15:30because you're in their lives?
15:33I don't mind the people who follow me.
15:35I mind paparazzi more than I mind
15:38the people.
15:40I don't mind people coming up
15:41and asking for pictures.
15:42I do mind.
15:43I've had the weirdest moment for me
15:45would be them finding my address
15:46and coming to my house to take-
15:49And you're going out,
15:49people try to snap pictures.
15:51Yeah, it was one time, but at my house,
15:53like one time they came to my house
15:56and they were trying to get a picture of me
15:57without my wedding ring on
15:59because I just filed for divorce
16:00or I just announced or whatever.
16:03They leaked the court document.
16:04But yeah, they like came to my house
16:06and my kids and I were on a walk.
16:09And they let me restage the paparazzi shoot.
16:11So the paparazzi shoot that's on
16:14with people and everything
16:16is a staged paparazzi shoot.
16:18So I got mad
16:20because I don't show my kids' faces
16:21or anything about them online.
16:23And I was with my kids.
16:24And then the paparazzi guy,
16:26I called the police.
16:27I was like, they're following me and my kids.
16:28I kind of figured it was paparazzi,
16:30but I was like, what do I do?
16:32My manager was like, call the police.
16:34Called the police and they came.
16:36Like, okay, so we talked to him.
16:38And he's going to let you redo it
16:40without your kids.
16:40He'll delete all the pictures of your kids,
16:42but you just need to walk down the street
16:44and redo these photos.
16:45And I was like, there's no way this is allowed.
16:48You're just going to make me go do this?
16:50Negotiating with the press.
16:51Yes.
16:51That's wild.
16:52So yeah, then I had to go down my street
16:54and in the picture,
16:56I am on the phone with my manager
16:59being like, is this enough?
17:00Do you think this is enough?
17:00Can I go back inside?
17:02My kids were screaming inside
17:03because they're like, mom,
17:04why did you just drop us off
17:06inside the house
17:07when my sister was in there
17:09to go take photos on our street?
17:11What about, do you get a lot of online trolls
17:14or hate or anything?
17:15How does that work?
17:16Yeah, I get a lot.
17:19I feel like I, for the most part,
17:22I don't necessarily find,
17:25maybe this is unpopular,
17:26but I don't find all of the hate I get as bad.
17:29Sometimes it helps me and sometimes,
17:31and it's not to invite more people to be mean,
17:33but I feel like sometimes
17:35when a lot of people think something,
17:37maybe it's true.
17:39So I've changed direction of what I'm putting out
17:42based on what the comments are saying.
17:44And sometimes it's just constructive criticism.
17:48It can be a little mean,
17:49but yeah, it doesn't bother me too much.
17:52So you're like the epitome of the new media.
17:54Now you have, like you said,
17:56you took one class in college.
17:58You've never been a journalist,
18:00but you run one of the most popular interview shows
18:06out there.
18:07What do you think makes you stand out?
18:09And where do you see media heading?
18:10You are on the forefront of this new wave of media.
18:14Well, it's not new, it's been around for a decade,
18:16but it keeps on eclipsing traditional media
18:19like what we're doing right now.
18:22What's your take on the industry right now?
18:26I think people like how unscripted podcasts are
18:30and how it's just more casual
18:34than, I guess, old media,
18:36which what would that be like a late night show?
18:39I feel like it's less scripted and it's fun.
18:41I think that with my podcast,
18:43it's just especially fun
18:44because you're seeing these people
18:45in a setting you would never normally see them in.
18:49And I don't know how it keeps working for me.
18:54I just take it one interview at a time.
18:57Do you think people are different on your show
18:59than they would be on other shows?
19:00Do you think you're letting the audience
19:02get a different side of these folks
19:04Yeah, I feel like people open up to me
19:06more than they would normally
19:07just because it's so casual
19:09and we're just talking and we're just...
19:10I feel like that's the same
19:12with a lot of podcasts though,
19:13is they're able to be more vulnerable
19:15because it's not, I don't have this setup
19:18in my podcast room, it is three of us.
19:21Maybe next time, the crew here
19:22will give you an amazing formal setup.
19:24Oh yeah, no, would they be as...
19:26I feel like they'd be more likely to say less,
19:30but right now it's just me, the person,
19:32and then maybe two people on cameras in the room
19:35and it's just very chill.
19:37We can talk about anything.
19:38And I also give every guest final cut
19:40of every interview, so it's nothing
19:43that they can say whatever they want
19:44and know after they can take it out, so.
19:47What are you excited about?
19:49Like for the next six months to a year,
19:52what are you focused on?
19:53What do you wanna make?
19:54What do you wanna build?
19:55Well, I'm switching out of...
19:58I'm gonna do the podcast.
19:59I'm signed to a year contract.
20:00I have to do the podcast till next June at least.
20:03And how many do you do?
20:04One a week?
20:04Yeah.
20:05Okay.
20:05Yeah.
20:06I might switch to one every other week.
20:09It's a lot of traveling.
20:11And I'm, like I said, a mom,
20:12so it's really hard for my kids to have me leave
20:15and I prefer to be home.
20:18You're like an NFL player, leaving every week.
20:20It is.
20:21I really do leave once a week and it's...
20:24I try to time it with the days they're with their dad,
20:26but if I can't,
20:27cause I'm on the guest schedule, not mine.
20:30Yeah, so I wanna get into acting more,
20:35so I'm working on a TV show.
20:37Oh, nice.
20:37Yeah.
20:38What's like, what kind of show is it?
20:40I would describe it as kind of like Dave,
20:43but about me, not Dave.
20:44Dave, the movie or the show?
20:47Show.
20:47I've never seen the show.
20:48You have to watch it.
20:50That's good.
20:50Give me the synopsis.
20:55It's just, it's about...
20:59It's kind of seems real, I guess, about his life.
21:03So for me, it would be a show about my life,
21:06but it's scripted,
21:07so it's not gonna be exactly about my life,
21:10but it's gonna be just a show kind of.
21:11It's like a Kirby Enthusiasm.
21:13Yeah.
21:13Would you play your kind of yourself?
21:15Yeah.
21:16So you're not playing a character that you just...
21:18No, I play myself.
21:19Yeah, but it'll be scripted, so we're working on it now.
21:23Before we wrap, what is...
21:26Give me a big prediction that you see
21:28about like the media industry
21:30or like the digital media industry
21:32in the next six months to a year.
21:34I feel like it's just gonna be the same.
21:36Just the same.
21:36That's a prediction.
21:37That's an easy one.
21:38Easy.
21:39I'll be all tough.
21:39Thank you for joining us.
21:40Thank you for having me.
21:42It's great.
