00:00The Department of Agriculture asked for help from the Camera to continue to lower the price of rice in the country.

00:07This is what Melales Morax said.

00:11We can lower the price of rice but there is a problem, Mr. Chair.

00:17We need the Congress' help to bring back the powers of the NFA.

00:23Agriculture Secretary Francisco Chu Laurel Jr. asked for help from the Camera to lower the price of rice in the market.

00:30In the continuation of the House-Kinta Committee or Murang Pagkain Supercommittee,

00:35the Secretariat argued that it is important to bring back the powers of the National Food Authority to sell cheap rice.

00:42This was prohibited under the Rice Tarification Law and the DA was also affected.

00:48Right now, what is happening to us is like one of our hands is fighting tied to our back.

00:55If the powers of the NFA and with the authority of the DA Secretary will be brought back,

01:03the DA will be more effective in punishing the rice traders and we will be able to influence the price of rice.

01:15Secretary Laurel is adamant that even if they want to punish those who are behind the overpricing of rice,

01:21it will not be enough for their power.

01:23Even so, they continue to strictly monitor the movement of the price of rice.

01:28I think that the price of rice should be from P42 to P49 max, P48-P50.

01:34I agree with Mr. Chair that why is there a P50?

01:39That is P60. That is not right.

01:42Unfortunately, we do not have the powers to catch anybody in the market because we do not have the enforcement for that, Mr. Chair.

01:53As of now, regarding the situation, the DA stated that they already have different initiatives to give the public cheaper rice.

02:00Just in time for the upcoming Christmas, he also expects to expand their Rice for All program.

02:07As of the moment, Mr. Chair, we already have 48 stores that sell P40 rice.

02:16Our target by mid-January, by end of this year, in the next few weeks, our target is P170.

02:25By mid-January, our target is 300 outlets inside the market.
