00:00PTV Sports is back!
00:04Joining us in the studio is engineer SL Bonaquino,
00:08the newly elected deputy president of the Asia-Pacific Chitoryu Karate Federation
00:15and sensei Frank Martin Honorado,
00:18one of the coaches of PKL El Tigre Pilipinas
00:21and head coach instructor of PKL Cavite.
00:26Good morning and welcome to PTV Sports.
00:29Good morning.
00:32How did Chitoryu start?
00:35Can you tell us how it originated?
00:39Chitoryu is a style of karate.
00:42There are so many styles of karate,
00:46but the major is Chitoryu, Shotokan, Wadoryu, and Shurin, Gojuryu.
00:54PKL El Tigre Pilipinas is composed of different styles.
01:00We have teams from Shotokan, Chitoryu,
01:05but the major style of PKL is Chitoryu Karate.
01:10It originated from Japan by the Mabuni family in the 1930s.
01:19Until now, the development of Chitoryu Karate is ongoing.
01:24By the way, we are the accredited branch here in the Philippines for the Yoshokan,
01:31or the main family of Chitoryu in Japan.
01:36Actually, Soke Mabuni came here twice or thrice.
01:42The last time was in March.
01:44He conducted seminars and done examinations.
01:50Engineer and Sensei, there are so many styles of karate,
01:56but what makes Chitoryu different from other styles?
02:00Chitoryu is just a balance,
02:06like other styles that focus more on power.
02:10In Chitoryu, it's like meditation.
02:14There's time for power, time for relaxation,
02:18more on breathing.
02:19The muscles should not be stressed.
02:24We're not only focusing on power, but also on techniques.
02:29But let us clarify that all styles are good.
02:33It depends on the player where he can adapt to the style.
02:38For our case, we easily adapted to the Chitoryu style,
02:42but for other styles, they're all okay.
02:45I'm also curious, why P-K-L-L-T-G-R-R?
02:51Because it's aggressive.
02:52Chitoryu is a balance for those who don't know.
02:58If you notice, the logo of P-K-L-L-T-G-R-R is a tiger.
03:03We're also following the character of the tiger.
03:07Of course, it's tame.
03:09It's quiet when no one bullies it.
03:13But once there's an attacker, that's when they'll use the karate style.
03:17There's the do.
03:18There's the discipline.
03:19They only use this for self-defense, the karate techniques.
03:23Once provoked, they're out there to defend themselves.
03:28Let's talk about your accomplishment here at the 16th Asia Pacific Chitoryu Karate Championship.
03:34You faced a lot of challenges.
03:36Can you tell us more about this tournament?
03:39The 16th APSKF was last week, November 27 to December 2 in Singapore.
03:50We sent 60 players there.
03:56We gathered 3 golds, 4 silvers, and 17 bronzes.
04:00It was attended by 27 countries, including the powerhouse countries like Japan, Kazakhstan, and Indonesia.
04:10We competed there.
04:14Eventually, we were able to participate in that event.
04:21We're not far from other countries.
04:24Other countries send national players from their countries.
04:28It's a big opportunity for the players of the PIKL and TIGRE Philippines
04:33that they were able to compete for those national players.
04:38Ma'am, just a quick follow-up.
04:40These 60 athletes who competed, do they have an age category?
04:45Can you tell us more?
04:46Yes.
04:47As young as 8 years old,
04:51there are Kata and Kumite.
04:53Up to over 60 years old,
04:57master veterans.
04:58Actually, for the veterans,
04:59we gathered gold medals from the Philippines for the veterans, 60 and above.
05:05Then for the 49 to 50,
05:09bronze,
05:10and also the other one,
05:15the lower one.
05:17Three veteran players got our medals.
05:20And then the others,
05:21like what Sensei Frank mentioned,
05:23three golds, four silvers, and 20 bronze medals.
05:29Wow.
05:30We're really afraid of medals.
05:32We're really afraid of awards.
05:34Given this,
05:35definitely,
05:36Karate, though, in general,
05:38we are doing very well in the international landscape.
05:41But with your organization or with your federation,
05:45what are the programs that you have right now
05:48in order to support our developmental athletes?
05:53Okay.
05:55Programs like,
05:56we have plans.
05:59We conduct seminars.
06:01Actually, we invite other Senseis.
06:05We go to Japan to attend the seminar.
06:10And then we share it with the Senseis here,
06:13and likewise with their students,
06:16so that we can progress or level up our Karate.
06:21And then this coming December,
06:24we will also have our 30th Annual KIAA Congress,
06:31wherein all the black belts are gathered here
06:34to share their talents, techniques.
06:37It's like a seminar.
06:39And then at the same time,
06:40we discuss activities for the whole year.
06:45So for 2025,
06:48we will also have activities.
06:50Yes.
06:51So that it's really scheduled.
06:53Because usually,
06:54every month,
06:55we have tournaments
06:56hosted by different branches.
06:59Sometimes, it's even simultaneous.
07:01That's why we really need time management.
07:04There.
07:05So it's scheduled for the whole year.
07:07And then we also have Japanese Masters who are invited here
07:13to level up,
07:15to skill up the Karate techniques
07:17of the PQL El Tigre Filipinas players.
07:20It's nice to know that as early as now,
07:23at the end of the year,
07:24you already have your calendar.
07:27In terms of events,
07:29is this for both local and international events?
07:33Yes.
07:34Because like the next,
07:37World Shidoryu Karate Do Federation,
07:40so that would be on scheduled September of 2026.
07:44So based from that,
07:46we already have activities that are lined up
07:48in preparation for that international tournament.
07:51And then the next 17th,
07:53Asia Pacific,
07:54that would be on 2027.
07:57So everything is already programmed based on our international target.
08:02Aside from that,
08:03there are also friendship games with other countries.
08:07And then sometimes,
08:08they are the ones we invite to come here
08:12to compete with our tournaments here.
08:15Alright.
08:16So let's go back to the 38th KIAA.
08:20This will be held this December.
08:22What day is it?
08:23Of course, it's already December now.
08:25It is scheduled by 28th and 29th December.
08:31It's two days
08:32so that we can talk more
08:35and future plans for our organization and for karate.
08:39Speaking of future plans,
08:41what are the visions for PKL?
08:46Of course,
08:47we are also visualizing that we have more black belts
08:51because there are a lot of areas here in the Philippines
08:55that are not reachable by our black belts.
09:00So if we have more black belts,
09:02they will be the teachers and coaches for the future karatekas.
09:10They can develop as early as possible
09:13and then through constant practice with the guide of the black belts,
09:18they will be motivated and their level will increase.
09:22And they will be ready for the national and international tournaments.
09:27For those who are interested,
09:29how can they join your organization?
09:32For those who are interested,
09:34we have social media platforms like Facebook, Instagram,
09:40or website.
09:42We also have a website,
09:43Philippine Karate Do League.
09:45Just search it on Google,
09:47you will see it.
09:48Same with Facebook and Instagram,
09:51Philippine Karate Do League.
09:52Just DM or message us.
09:55In addition to that,
09:56we have a YouTube account
09:58called PHTV.
10:01We put the activities of the Philippine Karate Do League there.
10:06And also, you may contact us at
10:090917-814-4122.
10:15For those who want to join.
10:21And I'm sure a lot of people will inquire about it.
10:24But before anything else,
10:26we want to talk about your upcoming international tournament,
10:30the WSKF Championship in Japan.
10:34And the APSKF Championship,
10:37can you tell us more about this tournament?
10:40So the WSKF,
10:42it is a world championship for Shitori U.
10:46There are more countries that will join now.
10:50And of course, in Japan,
10:52the opponents are stronger.
10:54It's a powerhouse of Karate.
10:57The plans there is,
10:59we will still have qualifying events or tournaments here.
11:04So we can pick who we will send there.
11:07Of course, we will not just send,
11:10we need to really fight.
11:14That's why we will have qualifying tournaments for that.
11:17Like this latest one,
11:19we will have qualifying in the northern north area,
11:22and then at the southern area.
11:24So that we can really get the best players from the Philippines.
11:32How many athletes or karatekas are you planning to send here
11:38in the upcoming international competition in Japan?
11:40In Japan,
11:42for now, of course, we want to max out the entries.
11:45Because every country has slots.
11:48So for every category, there are only 2 slots.
11:51So it's better if we can max out that.
11:54I hope it's 50 players.
11:56But the question is the visa.
11:59Because sometimes, like the last world story,
12:03the Karate Federation Championship,
12:05the others were not able to attend
12:07because the visa was not approved in other countries.
12:12And then, it's better because more Japanese are coming here.
12:17Because it's good that your opponent is good.
12:20Because from there, you will learn the techniques they use
12:24and then check if you can apply it to yourself.
12:26And then practice.
12:28So the higher rated karatekas are our opponents
12:32with this prestigious tournament.
12:34But how ready are we?
12:36As you said, this is a level of competition.
12:39How ready are our athletes?
12:42So as early as now,
12:44our training is continuous.
12:47Every other day and weekend,
12:50when we have free time,
12:52we schedule training to continue.
12:55That's the key.
12:57Continuous training.
12:59There's no secret.
13:00There's no secret technique.
13:02Just continuous training.
13:04And because we have regular tournaments,
13:07it's one way for them to showcase their techniques
13:12and gauge their level.
13:14If it's low, they can improve.
13:17And if it's okay,
13:19more on improvement.
13:22It won't stop.
13:23As Sensei Frank said,
13:25our training is regular every week.
13:27And when the tournament is near,
13:30we have weekdays, right?
13:32After school.
13:33Because we don't want the kids to miss school.
13:37A lot of our players excel in school.
13:41They are with honors or the business stars of the school.
13:44Wow!
13:45That means they're able to manage their time well.
13:48Despite being a player,
13:50we know that when we train,
13:52it's a waste of time.
13:54Despite that, our karatekas are honor students.
13:57We make sure that they don't miss their studies.
14:02They just need proper time management
14:05and proper prioritization.
14:08I think it's also very important
14:10that the values disappear.
14:13And mental focus when it comes to an athlete's values.
14:17And it's very much exemplified
14:19because they're honors students.
14:21That's why in karate,
14:23the do means the values
14:26that they learn during the practice of martial arts.
14:32Wow!
14:33You're already an achiever
14:34when it comes to giving honor to the country.
14:36You're also an achiever in school.
14:37Yes.
14:38It's hard to cut that.
14:40Anyway, thank you very much, Engineer.
14:43And of course, Senpai.
14:44Final message.
14:45Do you have anything to say to our sports fans?
14:49So, those who are willing to join karate
14:53or any sports,
14:55you should enroll yourself into sports.
14:58It's better to enroll yourself into sports.
15:04It has a lot of benefits.
15:07It avoids stress and other activities.
15:11And of course, we'll enjoy it.
15:14And to parents,
15:17moms like me,
15:18don't hesitate to enroll your kids in karate.
15:22Some are afraid that they'll get hurt.
15:25We're already in sports karate.
15:27We're trying to minimize injuries to the players.
15:31That's why we're teaching them proper control and focus.
15:35Prioritization,
15:39school,
15:40school tasks,
15:42and then afterwards,
15:43that's the time we do the karate.
15:45And then, shout out to our good friend,
15:48Dennis Aquino,
15:49and to all PKL branches here nationwide.
15:54I already mentioned the contact info.
15:57Just visit our webpage.
16:00Sports.
16:01And now, we'll have a demonstration by members of PKL El Tigre, Philippines.
16:08Oh, let's watch that.
16:10Are we ready?
16:12It's like mini inside sports where we get to learn the sport of shutoryu karate,
16:18their style.
16:20So, what will happen in our demo for this morning?
16:26So, they will be performing katas.
16:29Karate has branches.
16:34So, in competition, we have kata and kumite.
16:37So, what they were doing is kata.
16:40So, kata means form.
16:42They show the forms that we do in karate.
16:47And every form has an application or bunkai.
16:53And if you notice, before they start, they bow.
16:59Because that's the sign of respect and courtesy for a Japanese.
17:03Because karate originated from Japan.
17:06That's why karate starts and ends with courtesy.
17:10That's one of the do's in karate.
17:12And that's all.
17:13I guess, it signifies the respect to their martial art.
17:18The humility, patience.
17:22Sensei, can you tell us more about what's happening?
17:24So, she's performing the kata nipaipu.
17:29So, you see, right?
17:31She's showcasing different techniques.
17:34There are kicks, different strikes, blockings.
17:39So, all of those movements have an application in self-defense.
17:44So, aside from teaching them the steps of kata,
17:49we also teach them the application of that kata.
17:54Or how to use it in a real-life situation.
18:00Sensei, I have a question.
18:01Go ahead, ma'am.
18:02What about the other athlete?
18:04What's the actor doing?
18:09He's performing the kata called papuren.
18:15What's that?
18:16So, papuren is one of the advanced kata for shit or you.
18:21We teach it not only to black belts.
18:25And they can also use it to compete.
18:31So, she's a black belt?
18:32Yes, ma'am.
18:33Actually, the younger one is also a black belt.
18:37But since she's below 18 years old,
18:40that's why she's a junior black belt.
18:42Because she's not an adult yet.
18:44But if she becomes 18,
18:47that's the time she will wear the plain black belt.
18:52Is she a college student?
18:54Yes.
18:55Nadine Lister?
18:56Yes, she is.
18:57She's Daniel Aquino.
18:58So, she is taking up business management.
19:01And she is one of the Dean's Listers in her school.
19:05And she has an award during the elementary and high school days.
19:13Wow, she's an achiever.
19:16Sensei, I see that every movement that they do is very snappy.
19:20There's power.
19:22Yes.
19:23Of course, we have to put power.
19:26But sometimes, we need that to attack.
19:32Of course, we need to produce power.
19:35Because when we do kata,
19:37we also imagine that we have an attacker or opponent.
19:41Imagine, imagine.
19:43Like I said, all of those movements have bunkai,
19:46or application in real life situations.
19:48So, for now, you imagine Senpai Kiyai,
19:51that someone is attacking him.
19:53So, that's why every movement he does has power.
19:58He imagines that someone is punching and kicking him.
20:02He really can defend himself, right?
20:06Yes, and that's one of the things that our coaches teach us during regular trainings.
20:11How to properly execute each move.
20:14Not just punch, but there's a proper technique.
20:17The twisting, the breathing.
20:23So that they can perform the techniques properly.
20:29For our sports fans that are interested,
20:32is there an age limit in learning karate?
20:38Or is it open for everyone?
20:41We usually accept 5 years old and above.
20:45So, if you're 40, 50 and willing to learn karate,
20:51you are welcome.
20:52So, we have a different type of teaching by age.
20:57So, for the kids, it's more of a playful way of teaching.
21:02They are more competitive.
21:04Like me, I started, I'm already working.
21:08So, I'm more on the administrative aspect.
21:12So, it's a balance, competitive and administrative.
21:17When you say administrative, it's more for?
21:20We check or analyze the needs of the players.
21:27And then, we coordinate with other organizations to provide them with these needs.
21:34Oh, teammate Meg, we can still do this.
21:37Can we?
21:38It's okay, because I have a Taekwondo background.
21:40Wow, no problem.
21:43You can still learn karate.
21:45Yes, of course.
21:46What if I don't have a background in sports?
21:49There's always a first time.
21:52As long as you're eager to learn, there's interest.
21:55There's no impossible.
21:57As long as you're willing and eager to learn.
22:00Just like your teammate.
22:02And by the way, the one who just did a demo is Serena Monique Perrion.
22:10She's also top 5 in her school in Imus Unida.
22:15What grade is she in?
22:17She's in grade 7.
22:24And she started at the age of 7 years old.
22:27For the karate world.
22:31Thank you so much, Engineer SL and of course, Sensei Frank.
22:36We will try karate.
22:38We will try Taekwondo.
22:42Meanwhile, teammates, anywhere, everywhere, you can watch us.
22:47Watch our programs on Free-to-Air Channel PTV4, Digital Channel 4, The Box Channel 12, TV Plus Channel 4 and Sky Gable Channel 29.
22:57For updates and live streaming, follow us on our Facebook page, PTV Sports Network.
23:05Also, don't forget to pay for the line-up that we distributed on PTV Sports Network.
23:10From 8am to 6pm.
23:14The 1 hour of hot sports is now over.
23:16I'm Vex Yoson.
23:18I'm Bernadette Hinoy.
23:20We have them with us here in the studio.
23:22They are...
23:23Can you...
23:24Do you want to introduce yourself?
23:27Introduce yourself.
23:28My name is Bernadette Hinoy.
23:30I'm 13 years old.
