00:03She is the former lady guard, now a senior high school PE teacher.

00:08From giving proper security, she decided to start a new chapter in her life to teach the youth.

00:17And to find out her story, we will talk this morning with Joalyn Resurrection Sarmiento.

00:23Good morning and welcome to Rise and Shine Philippines, Teacher Joalyn.

00:27Good morning, Ma'am. Good morning.

00:29I am a lady guard in the Philippines.

00:32From security guard, now you are a teacher, right?

00:36But both are very, very noble professions and you really help others.

00:41How is your life now that you are a senior high school PE teacher?

00:47Can you tell us about your experience when you were just a lady guard

00:52and how did you decide that you want to start a new profession?

00:59Being a lady guard is my duty.

01:01Although it is not that easy, especially when it comes to guarding.

01:11But that is the reason why I wanted to shift from security guard to teaching.

01:21I am very happy. I am happy with my profession now.

01:24I am happy that I am teaching my students.

01:28I am very blessed because someone told me that this is my first year in this school.

01:44So this is your first year in teaching and it seems that you are really enjoying your new job.

01:51What do you teach? What sports do you teach?

01:58I teach Physical Education in Senior High School, Our Lady of Patimay University in Valenzuela.

02:05That is where I teach now.

02:08It is not that easy, but I am happy.

02:13Yes, it seems like it. I can see the happiness on your face.

02:17What motivated you to change your job and become a PE teacher?

02:24Do you have any particular experiences that pushed you to become a PE teacher?

02:30As a solo parent, I was inspired by my three children.

02:38Because I was on a 12-hour duty, my time for them was running out.

02:45Unlike now, my time for them is longer because I have online and face-to-face classes.

02:53So I can be with them for a longer period of time.

02:57That is one of the reasons why I became a PE teacher.

03:00Second, I also taught in the Alternative Learning System as a volunteer teacher for two years.

03:08I was inspired by my students who wanted to change their lives.

03:16That is also one of the reasons why I decided to change my job and become a PE teacher.

03:27So you are a guard and a night shift teacher.

03:33So what is that? You did both at the same time.

03:37You said you are a solo parent and you are also studying to be a teacher?

03:42Yes, I am a guard. I studied in the school of the University of Caloocan City.

03:53After I finished my bachelor's degree, I was assigned to a teaching unit.

04:00Then I did my master's in the University of Caloocan City.

04:04Then I took up my master's in the second year of PE, Physical Education.

04:11Wow! You have a master's degree and postgraduate studies.

04:19I'm curious, what did you learn from being a lady guard

04:24that somehow helped you become a PE teacher?

04:31I learned to be brave.

04:34I learned to be alert, especially as a PE teacher.

04:41I was alert to my students so that they won't get in trouble.

04:45I was always their safety.

04:49Of course, kids are a bit naughty.

04:52But you really need to give them a guide.

04:58I was so blessed because the reason why I became a guard

05:06is because of my 12-hour duty.

05:08I was always alert at work.

05:10Everything we do, we do it on time.

05:18You always need to be dedicated when it comes to teaching.

05:26Teacher Jo, what is the most fulfilling part of being a teacher?

05:33Being a part of a student's journey.

05:38You see them grow for themselves.

05:46That's the most enjoyable part as a teacher.

05:50Even if it's a simple thing to help them,

05:55they learn from what you teach them.

05:59That's the most fulfilling part of being a teacher.

06:05I wonder if there are people who used to recognize you as a guard

06:09and now they know that you're a teacher.

06:12What are they saying to you?

06:14For sure, they're very proud.

06:17Yes, my friends say that they're all studying now.

06:25Even my cousins who are security guards,

06:29I encourage them that this is not the only thing we can do.

06:37We can still study and develop ourselves.

06:41Not only for our family, but also for yourselves,

06:44especially for your family.

06:47This is your dream.

06:51Nothing is impossible as long as you want it.

06:54Just make your dreams come true.

06:57That's very inspiring.

06:59What are your future plans?

07:01Do you want to study other courses?

07:04Or do you want to teach other subjects?

07:08What are your plans?

07:13I'll finish my Master's first.

07:16But I'll continue with my Ph.D.

07:19if there's a chance.

07:20I'll do a review so I can pass the LEC.

07:24Wow!

07:26That's great!

07:28What you said is right.

07:30If you want to do something other than what you're doing now,

07:34you can do it.

07:35If you just have the will to do it,

07:37and you look for your inspiration,

07:39just like for your kids,

07:40your family is your inspiration.

07:43You said it's your driving force

07:46why you decided to teach students.

07:50Maybe this is the last question.

07:52I know a lot of security guards.

07:54Even in every establishment,

07:56we have security guards.

07:58They have a big role.

08:00What message do you want to send to them?

08:02Maybe they have something in their hearts

08:05that they want to achieve.

08:10My advice to my fellow students

08:12who have become security guards,

08:14dream big.

08:16Make your dreams come true.

08:20No one is impossible.

08:22If you're determined,

08:24you can do it.

08:26That's it.

08:28It's for their future.

08:30It's what they want to do.
