00:00Some senators were saddened by the fact that education and health will remain a priority in their budget for the next year.
00:09This is what Daniel Manalastas reported.
00:14In a post on X, the saddened Education Secretary and former Senate Committee on Finance Chairperson Sani Angara
00:21reported that the budget for the Department of Education has been cut.
00:25He said that the trend has been reversed.
00:27Usually, the Congress adds more budget for education.
00:31The proposed budget for the Computerization Program of the Government was reduced to Php 10 billion.
00:37But the Senate Committee on Finance Chairperson Senator Grace Poe explained that there is still a fund for computers.
00:44The overall 2025 budget of the Department of Education has increased to Php 19 billion compared to its current budget.
00:52This will show the continued commitment to give priority to education.
00:57They gave priority to human resources, education, and students.
01:03Senate Majority Leader Francis Tolentino supported what Angara said.
01:08It's in the Constitution that education is the highest priority.
01:13I don't think that DepEd and CHED were reduced.
01:19So I totally agree, but again, I defer to the collegial wisdom of the members of the bicameral.
01:28Maybe there are more important priorities.
01:33But the budget for education should always be higher.
01:37According to Senator Sherwin Gatchalianz, he said that education should be given priority,
01:42especially computers and gadgets for education.
01:45Meanwhile, another issue that is being debated now is the budget of PhilHealth.
01:49Maybe the agency needs a supplemental budget that receives zero budget when it comes to subsidy.
01:55We can have a supplemental budget.
01:57But a lot of things happened properly in the Department of National Defense.
02:02That will be added.
02:03While some senators defended what happened to the agency's budget.
02:07From P500, it went down by P400 and P40.
02:11Now, it's P600 billion.
02:15We will add P74.
02:18For what? The benefits are not being added.
02:22We have very limited fiscal space.
02:24And when it comes to PhilHealth, our countrymen will not lose their benefits.
02:30They can use P600 billion here.
02:35And the DOH, from NEP, increased the budget by P30 billion.
02:40Senator Pia Cayetano was also dismayed by the budget cuts.
02:44In other governments, education and health should always be a priority
02:50if we are to build a stronger and more sustainable future.
02:55Daniel Manalastas for Pampansang TV in Bagong, Philippines.
