00:00As we are every Monday, we're joined by Patriots tight end Hunter Henry.
00:03He's brought to you by Shaw's and Star Market, perfecting the art of fresh.
00:07Hunter Henry, how are we doing this week?
00:08Hey guys.
00:11Took a while for the offense to get going.
00:13Yesterday, you did wind up getting a couple of touchdowns late.
00:17Why do you think there was a struggle to put points on the board early on in that
00:20game yesterday?
00:23Just bad football, bad execution.
00:27Just all around a lot of bad and it's not all good.
00:33So we got to play better early and it's not good enough.
00:37Anything you could put your finger on specifically when it comes to third down?
00:41One of the reasons why you guys didn't have a lot of plays overall in the game
00:45was because you were 0 for 6 on third down.
00:49Yeah, I mean, we were just behind the sticks on first and second downs.
00:53I mean, when you have negative plays and you're in third and 11 plus,
00:58I mean, against any defense that's an uphill climb.
01:01So, I mean, we were in third and long.
01:04It always makes things hard.
01:05Okay, you were in third and long in some of those situations.
01:08There was also third and fourth and short at one point in time.
01:11Earlier in the game, Robert and Jonathan Kraft were shown on the broadcast, and
01:15they appeared to be criticizing the play calling.
01:18Do you think the offensive play calling this year has been too
01:20conservative at times?
01:22I do not.
01:23I think AVP is great.
01:24I love AVP.
01:27How have you seen the relationship between Alex Van Pelt and Gerard Mayo?
01:33It's been great.
01:35Okay, because after the game, Gerard Mayo kind of insinuated that
01:39maybe Drake May should have run a quarterback sneak on third down or on fourth down.
01:43And from the outside, it appeared as though he was kind of putting the blame
01:47on the offensive coordinator there.
01:50Yeah, I don't really know much about that.
01:54But I've really enjoyed being around AVP, and I've really enjoyed the offense.
01:59Obviously, it hasn't been what we all wanted it to be in a lot of aspects,
02:04but I feel like he really is a great offense coordinator.
02:07I've really enjoyed being in this offense.
02:09We're talking to Hunter Henry, Patriots tight end here on Jones & Keefe, WEEI.
02:13There's been a lot of speculation about Gerard Mayo and his job security
02:16this year, and that would include on this show.
02:18What do you think of that speculation?
02:22I mean, that's y'all's job to do.
02:24I just worry about what we got to do, you know, take it week by week.
02:29So I'll let you guys all do all the speculating.
02:32You've had, what, four offensive coordinators in your four years here,
02:36which I would assume ties the record.
02:38I don't know if that is the record or not, but it's got to at least tie the record.
02:41How much does that knock you back, or how much do you have to start over
02:47when you go into the next year with a new offensive coordinator?
02:53Yeah, I mean, it can be tough for sure, especially for guys that, like,
02:56carry over and come back and all that.
02:59I mean, but, you know, there's a lot of guys always that come in and are fresh,
03:02and so you're always, in a way, learning a new offense for those guys.
03:06So, in a way, every year you're learning the offense again.
03:10So, I mean, yeah, it definitely can, you know, change things
03:14when you're having to learn a whole new offense again.
03:16But, yeah, it can make things hard, especially for four years,
03:21four offensive coordinators, but it is what it is.
03:24Lots of losses the last two years,
03:26which has to be frustrating the way you guys have played.
03:29How do you deal with the losses piling up?
03:34Man, I try to stay as consistent as I can, no matter losses, wins.
03:39I feel like I've always tried to do that throughout my career.
03:43You know, I got a job to do, and I try to execute my job at a high level.
03:48Obviously, it hasn't gone our way the last two years,
03:51but I think I stay consistent and still continue to attack each week
03:55and approach each week the same way with the same mindset,
04:00with the same just energy and take it week by week.
04:05That's just all you can do in this league.
04:07This is a humbling league, and, unfortunately, in these last two years,
04:11especially this year, we just haven't gotten a lot of wins
04:14and been humbled a lot.
04:16There's a lot to learn from, and you've got to continue to grow
04:20and learn from these losses.
04:22Since we last spoke to you, Bill Belichick took the University of North Carolina job.
04:26I'm curious, how do you think he's going to do in college?
04:32Bill, I think, will have a lot of success wherever he is.
04:35Man, Bill is just a tremendous football coach.
04:38Obviously, college is a different landscape nowadays,
04:41but Bill is just a tremendous football coach.
04:46It was just such a pleasure to be able to have played for him for three years,
04:50so I think he'll do good.
04:53I don't know if it'll be great out the gate, but who knows?
04:56He's just a great football coach, and he'll find a way to get wins.
05:01Patriots tight end Hunter Henry joins us every Monday
05:03on a Patriots Monday here on WEI.
05:05Hunter, we appreciate the time. Thanks so much.
05:07Good luck this week, and we'll talk to you next week.
05:11Hunter Henry joining us here on Patriots Monday,
05:14brought to you by Shaw's and Star Market.
05:17Bill may not be successful right out of the gate, he said,
05:20but he expects him to be successful.
05:21He also said, I'll let you guys speculate on Gerard Mayo.
05:25We will. I mean, we'll do that for the rest of the season.
05:29It's definitely what we're going to do.
05:31I mean, I don't know what else he would want us to do.
05:34It's our job. That's what he said.
05:36No, I just mean, I don't know how much does he want us to focus on these games.
05:39Yesterday, we've said this a couple of times, felt extra depressing.
05:43It was the Cardinals, they stink.
05:45It was a 430, 425 game, head to head with the Bills and Lions.
05:49That also stunk. It felt worse yesterday.
05:52Maybe coming off the bye week made it feel worse, but yesterday was extra depressing.
05:56He's having a career year, Hunter Henry is.
05:58Yeah, so maybe that's why he likes the offense.
05:59He's like, I like the offense.
06:00Not touchdowns, though.
06:01No.
06:02He's got one touchdown, which he had nine his first year here.
06:05But I think he already has a career high in receptions, and he's really close to yards.
06:12He'll probably get that next week.
06:13So, yeah, individually, he's having a pretty good season.
06:16I like this text, 617-779-7937.
06:20Keith, I expect crap questions from Jones.
06:23True.
06:24Hunter has been nothing but good to you, and you go up and try to badmouth the coaches?
06:29Wait a minute, what?
06:30You're better than that. Jones is not.
06:31Well, that's fair.
06:32But I didn't have him badmouth the coaches we were talking about.
06:35Yeah, how dare you, Keith?
06:36I asked him about the—I'm curious about the Van Pelt-Mayo relationship.
06:40Isn't anybody else?
06:41Yes.
06:42What those guys are like at practice, game day?
06:43I don't even know if they talk to each other on game day.
06:45Yeah, well, they certainly—again, Van Pelt made it clear on our show on Friday
06:49that Mayo's in charge of if we're running clock, if we're running plays, if we're aggressive.
06:54That's all.
06:55I'm listening to coach.
06:56I work for coach.
06:57Yeah.
06:59He comes out and says, yeah, you said it, I didn't, when it comes to the conservative play calling
07:03and not running Drake May down by the goal line.
07:05So I don't know.
07:06It doesn't sound like they're on the same page.
07:07It does not.
07:08It doesn't sound like they're aligned.
07:09I thought it was a fair question.
07:10All right.
07:11Well, that's fine.
07:12But yeah.
07:13Text in.
07:14Same number as the call-in number.
07:15All good.
07:16I agree.
07:17I'm not badmouthing those guys.
07:18I do agree with that.
