Queensland's southeast is saturated with the region on the brink of recording its wettest December in more than a decade. At the same time there's an extreme heatwave in the state's west while the far north also in the grips of high heat is keeping an eye on a developing low.

00:00Cars abandoned in Brisbane's north, food trucks inundated and this vehicle nearly swept away
00:10by a rising river.
00:11Many areas of the south east probably seen somewhere between 100 and 200 mil accumulatively
00:17over the last two days.
00:18Further rain to come during today and tomorrow would put it on track for its widest December
00:23since 2010.
00:26That December set the scene for the deadly 2011 floods.
00:30As a precaution, SEQ Water has begun releasing water from North Pine, Somerset and Wyvern
00:36Hoe dams.
00:37Doing these releases now helps put us in the best situation possible in managing any further
00:43water that mightn't be expected from those forecasts.
00:47While authorities insist there's no cause for alarm, downstream crossings will remain
00:52submerged.
00:54It's been raining in the Wide Bay region for days, with 100mm in the past 24 hours alone.
01:01Leaving the Merrie River swollen, bridges closed and the Tyro SES making flood preparations.
01:08This is only a taste, all I can say is please be ready, be prepared to be isolated for up
01:15to three days.
01:16The state's west is facing intense weather too, with an extreme heatwave pushing temperatures
01:22in long reach into the 40s.
01:25The far north is bracing for the potentially deadly combination of high heat and humidity.
01:31The issue is that we can't lose our body heat through normal processes such as sweating,
01:36so it puts an extra burden on the body and we can overheat very quickly.
01:39The rain should finally ease across the south east by Thursday, but there's now concern
01:45a tropical low could be developing in the far north.
01:49While it's unlikely to become a cyclone, it's threatening to deliver yet more heavy rain.
01:55Catchments are already wet and very responsive as well, so very little wiggle room for extra rainfall.
02:02Wild weather from the top to the bottom of the state.
