00:00Powerlifting Association of the Philippines' former president, Edi Torres,
00:05celebrated the first time that powerlifting can be counted as a sport
00:10in the 100th celebration of the National Collegiate Athletic Association or NCAA.
00:16For more details, here is Paolo Salamatin's report.
00:21Powerlifting can be counted as a sport in the first time
00:26in the centennial season of the Philippine National Collegiate Athletic Association or NCAA.
00:31It can be considered as a big milestone for the powerlifting community in the Philippines
00:36where the Powerlifting Association of the Philippines has been in operation for more than 20 years
00:42of inter-school competitions in various places in the country.
00:45This month, the initial target of the PAP was to hold the competition
00:50but it was rescheduled to March of the next year
00:53which was expected to be held by at least 20 participating schools.
00:59In a PTV Sports interview, PAP's former official, Edi Torres, said
01:03that even if the competition will be held in the next year in the NCAA,
01:08it will not be considered as an impossible regular
01:11and will be a demo sport in the University Athletic Association of the Philippines or UAAP.
01:16This is a major step just to get to be included in one of the NCAA events.
01:25From there, we would like to put on a good show.
01:30If the result is good, maybe we can consider powerlifting
01:35for the next step of being a demo sport towards our ultimate goal of being a regular.
01:43And who knows, if we can be included in the NCAA, maybe UAAP won't be far behind.
01:49Even though the event was postponed for a few months,
01:52Torres also said that the Filipino powerlifters should look forward to the day of the competition.
01:58In the NCAA powerlifting, we will have a lot of world-class and Asian-class lifters.
02:04Plus, the up-and-coming, those who have potential,
02:08and some of them might pull upsets over some of the international lifters.
02:14So, we will see. I'm expecting some surprise performances by the lifters.
02:38Asian Junior and Sub-Junior Championships in India
02:41in May.
02:43Paulo Salamatin for Pambansang TV in Bagong, Philippines.
