00:00Playing the role of Gator today will be Kang, who will also be playing the role of Kang.
00:06Double duty.
00:07Yeah, so we're not flipping a coin, Doug.
00:08You're just going to go first.
00:09I'm sorry.
00:10Sounds good.
00:11All right.
00:12Here we go, Doug.
00:13Question number one.
00:14As of right now, the Raiders and the Giants, they have the two worst records, and they
00:18also might need new coaches at the end of the year.
00:21If it's decided universally that Shador Sanders should be the number one overall pick by either
00:26But they have to hire his dad, Deion Sanders, as their head coach.
00:30Should they draft Shador and hire Deion Sanders?
00:33Yeah.
00:34Look, I think they're both worth it, and I'm in favor of it for a couple of reasons.
00:37One, any NFL job not going to Ben Johnson and Aaron Glenn, I'm in favor of.
00:45So if Deion takes one of those jobs, that'd be good.
00:49It'd be an interesting experiment, too, to see Deion in the NFL, where I'd be intrigued
00:57to see how he does with professional players.
00:59Now, with that said, I do love him in the college game, and I love college football,
01:04and I think Deion brings so much to college football.
01:06He is a fun watch.
01:08He's put Colorado on the map.
01:09They become, I'm not going to call them must-see TV, but they are definitely more intriguing
01:14than they were.
01:16And Stephen A., when Deion said, I'm staying at Colorado, which he has said again, Stephen
01:22A. said, I don't believe him.
01:24And that's another cool reason for him to stay in college.
01:27But I think I'd do it if I were one of those teams.
01:30I think for college football, Doug, my idea is have a fan vote for the last playoff team,
01:35and that team gets in.
01:36Let's just make things real interesting.
01:38I would have voted for Colorado, because that would have made things incredibly exciting.
01:42Just for me, selfishly.
01:43As far as this question is concerned, I do not like it when players and their families
01:49try to dictate what organizations should do.
01:51You know, I generally do not like that.
01:53I don't think it's a good idea.
01:54I don't think it's a good recipe for things, for how the outcome might turn out.
01:58With that being said, though, if it's, hey, if Shadour Sanders is, hey, we all agree this
02:04guy should be the number one pick, he's going to lead our franchise, and we all agree Deion
02:09Sanders is going to be a great NFL coach, it just happens to be his dad, then I think
02:13you do do that.
02:14Otherwise, if you are iffy on either one of them, don't do this.
02:18Do not do it just because you get the player, the only way to get the player is to get the
02:22coach or vice versa.
02:23Don't compromise.
02:24Yeah, exactly.
02:25Also, though, the problem might be just how do you separate their relationship in the
02:31side of the NFL locker room?
02:32I mean, that is still his dad.
02:35This isn't like a Bronny LeBron thing, because this is not like nepotism as, hey, we're literally
02:39only drafting him because of your dad.
02:41Shadour has earned the right to be a high draft pick.
02:44So in the end, as long as they're both worth it, I would do it.
02:47Other than that, stay away.
02:51All right, the Atlanta Falcons just kind of made a real bold move here right near the
02:55end of the season.
02:56They're right in the middle of a playoff race, and they decided to bench their veteran quarterback
02:59Kirk Cousins for rookie Michael Penix.
03:03Like I said, they're in a heated playoff race, Doug.
03:05This is not over by any means.
03:06They could still win that division.
03:08Was this the right call?
03:09So as an outsider looking in, not privy to what's going on in practice, to me, this is
03:13the wrong call.
03:15I think there's a better chance that the veteran who's got, I believe, one touchdown and ten
03:20interceptions his last five games, I think there's a better chance that what that guy's
03:24going to do next is better than what the rookie quarterback will do next.
03:29But this is why I said as an outsider, because I discovered something when I got to go to
03:32start to get to go to Michigan football practice and fans, why doesn't this guy play?
03:36Why doesn't that guy play?
03:38And I realized when you're at practice and you're seeing them practice, you realize why
03:41they aren't playing.
03:43These decisions are typically way more obvious that even an untrained observer like myself,
03:49a non-coach like myself, could see why a guy doesn't play.
03:52So if Penix is tearing it up in practice, and they think his practice performance is
03:57starting to get in line with what they're seeing out of Kirk Cousins, then yeah, you
04:02make that call.
04:04But I'm not at practice, so I'm going to say it's a wrong call.
04:07Yeah, I think this is a more ballsy call than people think.
04:11They just think that you read off the numbers, Doug.
04:13Kirk Cousins is having a really bad stretch right now, no doubt.
04:17But he also has had some really big games this year, and he's got a resume that shows
04:21that he can do it over a long period of time.
04:25He's shown that.
04:26Michael Penix, you have no idea what he's going to be.
04:29I will say this, Penix is an older rookie, so it's not like bringing in a 21-year-old.
04:33And hopefully maturity-wise, mentally, he is more ready than most rookies would be.
04:38But I think this is a ballsy call because Cousins, hey, he's had a bad stretch, but
04:42he can get hot real quick, too.
04:44Now what Penix will provide them is that initial spark, that adrenaline for a team, his mobility
04:49will probably keep certain plays alive that Kirk Cousins wasn't able to.
04:52But this is no shoo-in just of, hey, go with the other guy, we'll get in the playoffs.
04:57So I agree with you.
04:58I think this is risky.
04:59I'm going to say it's the wrong call because in the end, they won't make the playoffs because
05:02of it.
05:03And that's why I'm saying wrong call.
05:05Alright, Sam Darnold has led the Vikings to a 12-2 record, but he's only on a one-year
05:11deal, Doug.
05:12Do the Vikings need to sign Darnold to a long-term deal after the season?
05:15I got to tell you, the timing of J.J. McCarty's injury really, really hurts because he actually
05:21needed a second surgery, which pushes back his recovery time, and they have to make a
05:26call on this probably before they can really see J.J. practice all that much.
05:30I would say that you have to try to bring him back.
05:35It's not about proving that you were right with the draft pick.
05:37It's not about, hey, we have to hand the torch to the young guy.
05:42You hope you have to hand the torch to the young guy, but the fact of the matter is,
05:47you got a quarterback that's led a team to a 12-2 record.
05:50I think you have to try to bring him back.
05:54You could always franchise him, though, right, for one year, and then you'd hang on to his
06:01rights for one more year and then go to McCarty, and you'd have more evidence to decide if
06:06you actually need to sign him long-term, but they got five quarterbacks under contract.
06:11It's crazy.
06:12They got Daniel Jones.
06:13They got Nick Mullins.
06:14They got Brett Rippin, J.J., and Darnold.
06:16Yeah, it's a hell of a quarterback room.
06:18I think you have to bring him back, whether it's on a franchise tag, Doug, or it's quote
06:24unquote a long-term deal.
06:25For me, a long-term deal would be three years, because that way you can actually get out
06:28of it after two if you need to, because that happens in the NFL all the time, but you got
06:32to bring him back.
06:3312-2 is 12-2, my friend, and it's not easy to do that.
06:39You got to give Sam Darnold's credit.
06:40He is part of the reason why they're doing this well.
06:44We'll see what the playoffs brings for the Vikings, but maybe he is the next Jared Goff,
06:49where I know he hasn't had the success Jared Goff had earlier in his career, but wrong
06:53coaches, wrong organization, bounced around, high traffic, had the skill set, just never
06:57had the right surroundings, and maybe he finally found it, and like I said, when you're 12-2,
07:01you don't just look past that.
07:03That's really hard to do.
07:04I'd bring back Darnold almost at, whether it's franchise or a three-year deal.
07:07Alright, do the 49ers, speaking of quarterbacks, have to extend their quarterback, Brock Purdy,
07:13at the end of the season?
07:14He is up for an extension.
07:15Okay, so I would not extend him.
07:18All his numbers are down.
07:19The team isn't winning.
07:20Now, a lot of that has to do with losing weapons around him, obviously, but he is under contract
07:25next season.
07:26Now, they'll expose him to free agency, but I would make him prove it and then pay him.
07:30I have no problem with paying someone what they are worth, but make him prove it once
07:34again that he is worth it, and if you cannot come to an agreement, franchise him and try
07:38again the following year.
07:40I would extend him, Doug.
07:42I think I just mentioned before, QBs are hard to come by.
07:44This is a QB league, and QBs get paid.
07:46I think you end up saving money if you do it now as well, instead of waiting, and I
07:50don't know if that's the risk-reward that GMs do all the time, whether you should extend
07:54a guy now or wait until he hits free agency, but I think Brock Purdy is legit, and I think
08:00if that costs you a player like Deebo Samuel because you have to pay Brock Purdy, then
08:03so be it.
08:04Deebo's had a really down year anyways, and what you've got to do is what every team has
08:08to do eventually at some point, draft and develop, so I'd bring back Brock Purdy because
08:12it's the most important position in football, and he can play the position well.
08:16All right, another quarterback question, Doug.
08:21Quarterback league, like I said, should the Chiefs rest Patrick Mahomes this week?
08:25I know he had a full participation in practice, but they don't have to play him if they don't
08:29want to.
08:30Yeah, they got a two-game lead in the AFC with three to go, and this would be an easy
08:34no-doubt rest him decision, but the fact that he's been a full practice the last two practices.
08:39Then I remembered, and I consulted the NFL script, and it says in there that only the
08:45Detroit Lions when important players suffer season-ending injuries, so they should be
08:50good.
08:51Go ahead and play him.
08:52Yeah, I mean, I'm pretty sure they're going to play Patrick Mahomes, but I honestly wouldn't,
08:55and I'd give a real strong thought to not playing him.
08:57They have that game cushion, and in the end, the Chiefs are that team that can win anywhere,
09:03any place, any time.
09:05They've done it before.
09:06This is nothing new to them.
09:07They've won on the road.
09:08They've won at home, and this would be like an extra bye week for Patrick Mahomes.
09:14We talk about the extra bye week if the NFL adds another game, things like that.
09:17Well, guess what?
09:18You can actually give your best player, your star player, your most important player a
09:21week, a full week to rest up, and then come back strong for the stretch run here.
09:25I would really think about it, but I doubt they'd do that, but I would.
09:34All right, Troy Aikman brought it up again on Monday Night Football, Doug.
09:38For some reason, he really thinks the Chicago Bears should think about trading for 49ers
09:43head coach Kyle Shanahan.
09:45Should they make a trade for Kyle Shanahan?
09:48You know, it's funny, because I'm in favor of anybody not named Ben Johnson getting any
09:51job, but if Kyle Shanahan goes from San Francisco to Chicago...
09:57Be objective, Doug.
09:59The objective part of me is Ben Johnson would be more likely to be interested in the San
10:03Francisco job than the Chicago job.
10:06So no!
10:07Actually, why did he even bring this up?
10:09Why not try and trade for Andy Reid?
10:11Why not try and trade for Dan Campbell?
10:13Why Kyle Shanahan?
10:14I think it's a peculiar suggestion, and I don't know if he's got inside intel or something
10:21like that, but I hope he does not get traded to Chicago for the reason that I stated.
10:27If you're the Bears, you can try, see what he can do with Caleb Williams, but I really
10:34hope he doesn't.
10:35You know, Aikman's plugged in.
10:36Maybe he does have some intel, and that's why he keeps bringing this up.
10:40As a Lions fan, I don't want the Bears to do this, because if he doesn't get traded
10:44to the Bears, Kyle Shanahan doesn't get traded, I don't think Ben Johnson would take the Bears
10:48job anyways.
10:49They're just in disarray with the upper management, the president, the GM.
10:53So I don't want the Bears to get better.
10:55But if I'm a Bears fan, I would absolutely do this.
10:58Now, this would take more than what Denver gave up for Sean Payton, but I think it'd
11:01be worth it.
11:02They do have an extra second round pick this year from Carolina, and you can give up future
11:05picks of course, but I think they don't have a clue how to pick the next guy.
11:10You know what I mean?
11:11Ibra Flues was a joke.
11:13Nagy didn't work out well.
11:15This interim coach right now, I feel bad for him.
11:17He was the interim offensive coordinator for like a day before they made him the interim
11:20head coach.
11:22They don't know how to pick the next guy.
11:23So get a more established guy who has a history of developing quarterbacks.
11:26That's the most important thing right now, is developing Caleb Williams.
11:29So I would trade for Kyle Shanahan.
11:30But I don't know if Troy Aikman has any insight or not.
11:33Alright, last one.
11:36Speaking of Kyle Shanahan, he admitted this week they made a mistake.
11:39By signing Devandre Campbell.
11:42He just walked off the field last week, as you know, didn't want to go into the game.
11:47This is a safe place, Doug.
11:49Safe space right here, okay?
11:50What is your biggest NFL mistake this year?
11:53Okay, so I was pushing for the Lions to trade for Devontae Adams.
11:57In fact, I think that was one of my preseason bold-ass predictions, that the Lions would
12:02do that.
12:04And yet for significantly less money, and without having to give up any compensation,
12:11they instead signed Tim Patrick, who's I think two touchdowns behind Devontae as a number
12:18three target, and they still have the best offense in the NFL.
12:23So I might be changing with the way Buffalo's playing, but they statistically still have
12:27the best offense in the NFL.
12:29So I didn't need to push that narrative.
12:31I went too far.
12:32Yeah, no, it's okay.
12:33I mean, the third receiver at the time, we didn't know who it was going to be.
12:36So I see where you're trying to go with that, but they end up saving some money too.
12:40Mine is, I think it's pretty obvious, it's Anthony Richardson.
12:43He just cannot throw the ball right now.
12:45He got benched for a little bit, hopefully reset his mind.
12:47I know they're trying to win games with Flacco, but you take that time off to kind of sit
12:52back and step back and be like, where am I going wrong?
12:54How do I adjust?
12:55How do I get better?
12:56He just has not gotten better at throwing the ball yet.
12:58I mean, he still has time.
12:59He's still very young.
13:00But maybe I kind of blame him and the staff.
13:03This is the same coaching staff, the head coach at least, that helped develop Jalen Hurts.
13:08You feel like you could probably do something similar with Anthony Richardson, maybe go
13:11to a more college-like offense, run the ball more, but they've got to do better by A.R.
13:16And this is A.R.'s fault as well, like I said.
13:18So my biggest mistake so far was thinking A.R. could take that next step this year,
13:22and he hasn't.
13:23And there it is.
13:24That concludes the Y9 Omaha four down around the league.
13:27Blitz thingy.
