00:00Hello everyone and welcome to The Good Buy, a new podcast from Harper's Bazaar where
00:05we invite celebrities, designers, models and tastemakers to talk shop.
00:10What they buy, where they got it and why it matters.
00:15Hi Good Buy listeners, it's Lynette Nylander, the Executive Digital Director of Harper's
00:19Bazaar.
00:20And it's Leah Chernikoff, the Executive Editor at Harper's Bazaar.
00:24And this is Harper's Bazaar's The Good Buy.
00:26Since we last recorded The Good Buy, it was Black Friday and Cyber Monday, very big shopping
00:33days for a very big shopper.
00:36Did you buy anything?
00:37You're going to be bitterly disappointed, but I didn't take advantage of all the discounts
00:42and everything that's going on.
00:43I think that, you know, Black Friday is an amazing time to snag a deal, but I find that
00:49if I'm buying in that kind of high, it's like a sample sale, you're just buying things because
00:54it's a great deal and whatever.
00:55But I did actually choose to purchase something that's a little bit more forever and that
01:00is the Manolo Blahnik Mary Jane.
01:04I've coveted these shoes forever.
01:06If anyone's ever seen that episode of Sex and the City where she goes, Manolo Blahnik
01:11Mary Jane.
01:12I thought that was an urban shoe myth.
01:14Like everyone has always wanted that shoe.
01:15It's beautiful.
01:16It's comfortable.
01:17I'm trying to get back into my heels era because I believe in my quest for wanting to bring
01:23back glamour that I should be wearing a heel.
01:25I kind of have gotten into sort of a block or a platform and it's not, it's very comfortable
01:29and I love, but they're not the most elegant of shoes and my star icon Rihanna always wears
01:34a heel.
01:35And so I must channel the same.
01:37I'm excited for you.
01:38I'm excited for your glamour era and your heels era.
01:42I'm sorry for your feet.
01:43Well, I'll guess this, this episode, which we're going to get to is the perfect teacher
01:49of my return to glamour.
01:50To your point, the sample sale effect of Black Friday, it's very real.
01:54But I did keep it.
01:55I kept it simple because I really, uh, as you know, I like my basics and I really like
02:03a good white tee.
02:04And when you find your white tee and you want to like commit to it, you want a bunch of
02:09them.
02:10So I really like the Lissette tees and they were having a sale and they don't have a sale
02:14very often.
02:15And for some reason I'm, you know, can't get past in my head that like a good white t-shirt
02:19is expensive.
02:20Yeah.
02:22It is.
02:23And like, I understand if it's something you wear all the time, like why shouldn't you
02:25invest in it?
02:26It makes sense.
02:27Yeah.
02:28I mean, let's, let's, let's clarify.
02:30I think you can get any white t-shirt, but I think that perfect crop and the neckline
02:35and the sleeve and the cotton being the right kind of gauge and not being too sheer.
02:40That is where the kind of, that's where the designer white tee has come, become in prominence.
02:46It does make a difference.
02:47Like if you're just going to wear jeans and a white t-shirt, but you want to, you know,
02:50kind of look like you've got it together.
02:52Like that, that is where that thing about the neckline and the, yeah, the, the gauge
02:56of the cotton really does matter.
02:58So anyway, I do, I like the ones from Lissette.
03:00I like their pointelle and I like their plain white cotton tees, the Margot and they were
03:07having a sale.
03:08So I bought some t-shirts.
03:10She bought some t-shirts and yeah, really risky, daring fashion moves over here.
03:14I mean, you know, a t-shirt is a, is a staple and I think that is a perfect segue into an
03:19intro for our guest this episode, who is a big believer in classics.
03:24It's about like wearing something in its signature and wearing it well.
03:27I'm super excited to have on the podcast, Dara, stylist, model, and fashion director
03:33of Interview Magazine.
03:34She is the mastermind behind the knockout red carpet looks of Hunter Schafer, Addison
03:40Ray's recent fashion ascendance, and she has an admittable approach to getting ready and
03:46dressing up and spreading joy and that commitment to that old school glamor, wherever she goes.
03:52Please welcome to the goodbye, Dara.
03:55Dara!
03:56I'm clapping for you guys.
03:57The live studio audience.
03:58Yeah, the live studio audience.
04:01Dara, we've had some looks on the goodbye.
04:03In our short run so far, we've had, you know, a Miley Cyrus, Ferragamo look.
04:09We have had Tracy's Bottega look.
04:12This is a look.
04:13Do you need to tell the listeners at home what you're wearing right now?
04:16I'm wearing a dress.
04:18This is like a McQueen, vintage McQueen dress with like a beautiful shoulder pad.
04:22I love a strong shoulder.
04:24My, you know, go to everyday sunglasses, red lip and button earring and then a funny little
04:31hat.
04:32Silly little hat.
04:33It's kind of like if a fedora was like on steroids, tipped over on the Titanic and then
04:40you stick a feather in it via Peter Pan.
04:42Guys, this is so indicative of who Dara is and the person that I admire.
04:49My admiration for you is not even a secret.
04:52Like I come, I run up to you during fashion week and I'm obsessed because there's such
04:56a commitment to glamour at all times.
04:59This is not something you threw on for the podcast or you throw on for fashion week.
05:02This is a 24-7, 365 day commitment to glamour.
05:07So talk us through that.
05:09There's range.
05:11It's not at 100% every day.
05:12Let's just like be real.
05:13But you know, I just love and appreciate it.
05:16I love the effort of glamour.
05:18I think for me, glamour is like my greatest coping mechanism.
05:22Like I think it's sort of like how I approach and process what goes on in the world.
05:27And I think about fashion as like, you know, a verb.
05:31It's like to fashion.
05:32You fashion yourself.
05:33You fashion things out of other things and you kind of like take whatever is around you
05:39and put it on yourself and use that fabric to create a story around whatever you're feeling.
05:44And so that's how I approach getting dressed and that's how I approach my work.
05:47And it's all the same to me.
05:49And I think it all deserves the same level of effort and level of commitment.
05:52Like it doesn't matter if it's a page of a magazine or on a celebrity on a red carpet
05:57or on myself or on TikTok or on Instagram.
06:01Like all of it's the same, you know what I mean?
06:04Can you tell us where it came from?
06:06I know that you were into Disney movies and you watched them with your mom, but how did
06:11you go from, yeah, a kid to...
06:14Yeah, well, I spent a lot of my childhood like drawing.
06:17Like I was always drawing, inside drawing.
06:18Like I sort of hated when we had to go outside for recess.
06:20Like I wish I drew more now, but like I think I've like moved it onto like a sort of like
06:25this is where I put it, you know?
06:27And I look at it very similarly.
06:29Like it's sort of like a flat 2D thing that is a shape and needs to like look a certain way.
06:35I always say like silhouettes is the most important thing to me.
06:37It's like the shape of it, the line of it is really important to me, yeah.
06:41How often do you shop?
06:42Are you a big shopper?
06:43I mean, I would assume so, but...
06:45I'm actually not.
06:46Yeah.
06:47Yeah.
06:48No, I've become more of a shopper for a long time.
06:52You know, the money had to go to rent food and so I was not giving shopping.
06:56And that's why I think where a lot of the like kind of like DIY approach of what I do
07:01comes from is like making things out of other things.
07:05And that's kind of like something I never like want to give up, even if I can afford
07:09something else now.
07:10You know what I mean?
07:11But for a long time, I think because I didn't really know myself as much as I feel I know
07:15myself now, it was very hard for me to buy anything.
07:19So I was kind of like a, I'm like a bit of a hoarder.
07:22So if anyone's ever giving anything away, I will absorb it.
07:25And so like anything a friend has given me, anything I took from my mom or my dad, I will
07:30hold onto it and repurpose it into something else.
07:32And I think that's always how I like would get dressed.
07:34And now I shop a little more.
07:36But yeah, I love like a vintage flea market.
07:41I am not a big online shopper, I need to touch and feel things.
07:45But I always say it's like, if you have the right approach and the sort of rigorous eye,
07:52you can find something good anywhere.
07:54It doesn't matter like, if it's like the Canal Street shop or Bergdorf, like it's like anywhere,
08:00you know?
08:01I remember admiring you, I moved to New York in 2017.
08:05And I think you moved in 2016.
08:07So I remember you in this movement of really exciting people in New York who were scrappy
08:12and making things happen, whether they wanted to be a photographer, like Ethan James Green
08:17and Cruz Valdez, you were a part of a movement who didn't have as much in terms of resource
08:23or they I mean, they were getting there, but had all the ideas in the world.
08:27And it feels like that is still a part of your style philosophy.
08:31Absolutely.
08:32Yeah, I think I was like, when I moved here, that's so like the kind of like community
08:39that I found warmth in.
08:42And it also sort of was like born on the internet.
08:45Like it was sort of like before I even moved to New York, I was connecting with those people.
08:49And there was kind of like a language and a way of using clothes and making clothes
08:55and making pictures.
08:57And it was really scrappy.
08:58But I don't know, I always I have always, always, always since I was like very little
09:03kind of been attracted to glamour and, and love beauty.
09:07I kind of came at it in a different direction in a sort of way.
09:11You're a complete firework because when you think about downtown style, like you've become,
09:16you know, a moniker, like a downtown icon, but you dress in like an uptown, I mean, a
09:23subversive uptown, but an uptown like nonetheless.
09:27And I think that is like, that's that incredible tension that makes your style so compelling.
09:31I love tension.
09:32I'm like, I was born a weirdo, but feel very normal or something like it's sort of like
09:37I just feel like there's always two sides.
09:39I always operate in both.
09:41And I don't really like when anything leans to one way or the other, like, I don't want
09:44to be fully like, buttoned up and uptight.
09:47And I don't really like when everything's rough and like too rough, you know, like,
09:51I think the fact that it kind of like straddles the line that kind of like, I don't fit in
09:57either place kind of is great.
10:00Like I love looking at things from that outsider perspective.
10:02Yeah.
10:03Either your either direction.
10:04I'm an outsider to the outsiders and I'm an outsider to the insider.
10:07Yeah.
10:08It's like, that's cool.
10:09Like I'm into it.
10:10Who is on your mood board?
10:12Who are the, who are your style people?
10:13Yeah, I was gonna say, because you said you always loved glamour, so who are those glamour
10:17icons?
10:18Oh my God.
10:19Ugh.
10:20I love anyone with like, sort of a commitment to their own like eccentricity and their eccentric
10:25style.
10:26I mean, like when I like was 18, I read Diana Vreeland's memoir and that kind of like changed
10:31my whole like, perspective on everything.
10:35And she's like a big influence and like sort of everyone that kind of emanates out from
10:39that world.
10:40Yeah.
10:41Legendary editor-in-chief of Harper's Bazaar.
10:42Yes.
10:43Yes, yes, yeah.
10:44Yeah.
10:45I love like the Warhol superstars, Edie Cedric and Kenny Darling and, and Jane Forth and,
10:50and I love like the Halstonettes and like Pat Cleveland was like a really big, when
10:53I first moved to New York, that kind of her version of glamour was really like important
10:57to me.
10:58Yeah.
10:59Kind of like the big curly hair and the like exuberance and the dancing everywhere and
11:02the twirling I loved.
11:04And then Tina Chow I love a lot.
11:05Yeah.
11:06Because I think she does this thing that's sort of androgynous and, and Grace Jones does
11:10that thing too.
11:11And I love toeing the line between masculinity and femininity.
11:14I don't like shy away from that at all.
11:17And I really appreciate that in, in fashion.
11:21And I think like growing up on like Madonna and Britney and like kind of how the pop performers
11:27like contain themselves in a certain like, you know, a certain way and then they leave
11:33it and they discard it and then move on to something else is always kind of how I've
11:36approached getting dressed.
11:38And I think that's where that comes from.
11:40She's taking the sunglasses off.
11:42We feel so honored.
11:44On the goodbye, we love to not just talk about style and all things fashion.
11:48We need to get into the weeds.
11:50We love to know what you have bought, want to buy, all of that.
11:55So first question is, what was your first buy?
11:59The buy that you like coveted and you really wanted or felt like you had made it and you
12:04were the only one?
12:06Oh my God.
12:07I'm, oh gosh, first, okay.
12:11The first thing that I, the first set of designer purchase that I kind of really remember
12:15was this is like, I guess it would have been like 2012 ish, 2013.
12:24And it was like this little Jill Sander, Raf Simons, like pouch, a leather, like I guess
12:30it was a wallet, but it was worn on a lanyard and on in the show, it's like all these kind
12:33of pouches that were kind of harnessed onto the, the models.
12:36And it was like a black patent leather with like a blue string.
12:40And it has a clear window, so you can kind of like put an ID and it was very like sort
12:43of, I don't know, fathom it or something.
12:46And I was obsessed with Raf Simons, like obsessed, obsessed, obsessed.
12:49To me, they really changed how I saw clothes and saw fashion that kind of, that you could
12:53go that spare and still say that much and be that simple and be that effective was like
12:59kind of, I don't know, it really shifted my viewpoint.
13:02I think it's interesting we're in this era of quiet luxury and all of that stuff and
13:06like minimal, like to me, that's the perfect, Raf and Jill is like the perfect level of
13:12minimalism.
13:13Like that's the minimalism that I think is really interesting and boundary pushing because
13:17you're, you, it's, it's almost harder to say something with it being refined like that.
13:23Yeah.
13:24Yeah.
13:25Yeah.
13:26Yeah.
13:27And I think, I don't know, what's that quote?
13:28Like elegance is restraint.
13:29I love, I live for that.
13:30Yeah.
13:31But like I completely agree.
13:32But it feels like harder to do that, right?
13:34To do something so simple and restrained like that and have it be so directional and
13:40impactful.
13:41Yeah.
13:42Yeah.
13:43It's, it's, it's minimal, but it's not nothing.
13:44You know, it's, it's to me, amazing fashion and good design is, is sort of thinking about
13:49it at its core and bare bones, and then you can decorate if you need to, and it's not
13:54necessary to get a point across, you know, and if it's not good at its core, like the
13:59silhouette and the material and the shape and the way it drapes and blah, blah, blah,
14:03then like, you have nothing.
14:05Actually all that decoration is doing nothing, because it's just covering something that
14:08doesn't have an idea around it.
14:09Yeah.
14:10You know, and so I love those kinds of clothes.
14:12And so that was kind of my first thing I bought.
14:14Was there also a purchase, I don't know, maybe even after the interview job or after Walking
14:18the Mark show that you made that also kind of made you feel like, I'm here, I'm doing
14:24this thing?
14:25I bought them sort of concurrently, so I was like going on a bit of a spree, I guess, in
14:29this is sort of like right after, yeah, kind of things started shifting and I sort of started
14:35feeling a little more settled.
14:37And it's so me, so funny, like I bought two pairs of heels, two pairs of heels.
14:44I bought like one, like a white pair from Bottega and then like a red patent leather
14:48pair from Manolo Blahnik.
14:50And why were they the ones?
14:52I just, I mean, I just was kind of like, I don't know, I think, I mean, shoes are kind
14:58of the thing that I want to buy all the time.
14:59And that's my weakness, that's my weak point, is like if I'll just buy a million shoes.
15:04And I really wanted a pair of white shoes, white heels, because I was kind of on a Sharon
15:08Stone and Basic Instinct kick.
15:11And so that was kind of like the futuristic white heel that was really like mean and nasty
15:16that I could find.
15:19And then the red shoes were just, I mean, I really wanted the like, these are an Urban
15:24Shoemith shoe.
15:25I went into Manolo looking for the black Campari.
15:28The Manolo Blahnik, Mary Jane.
15:29The shoe is just stunning still after all of these years.
15:32And I wanted the black ones, but they didn't have them, so I got the red ones.
15:36Perfect.
15:36Who's your go-to?
15:38If you were recommending a shoe, like a perfect heel, what brand would you go to?
15:43I'm a Manolo girl.
15:44A Manolo.
15:45Yeah, absolutely.
15:46And let's talk about that.
15:47Yeah, I am committed to a Manolo.
15:49A Manolo is, we know and trust, in Manolo, we trust.
15:53Yeah, me too.
15:54I love, love, love.
15:55I wear them every day.
15:55They're like my sneakers.
15:56Like, I can run around the world.
15:59I mean, I push it.
16:00You know, I wear like a crazy high shoe any day, all day.
16:03Like on set, all day long, like I'll do the high heel shoe.
16:06And I think that comes from like a sort of like that I wasn't allowed to have heels as
16:10like a teenager and like kind of growing up.
16:13Like, you know, my parents were like, girl, are you serious?
16:17So I, now I'm kind of like, well, I have to make up for lost time.
16:21I have to wear these heels.
16:22What's the inch count you max out at?
16:25I cannot wear over three.
16:26These are pretty tall.
16:27The tallest ones I really wear.
16:29Show the camera what this is.
16:30Oh my goodness.
16:30Yeah, I have like a round toe Manolo one.
16:32They're beat up because I really wear them.
16:34I'm not joking.
16:34No, we love.
16:35Hello.
16:35Is that four?
16:36That looks like a four or five, maybe.
16:38That's a four.
16:39Yeah, I don't think that's a four.
16:40I don't, yeah, I don't need it to go fetish.
16:42You know what I mean?
16:42I like a demure shoe.
16:43A demure, a mindful shoe.
16:46Yeah, not to give such buzzwords, but like, I do like, you know, I like the elegance of
16:51a sort of like, you know, a more simple shoe.
16:54I like a flat single sole.
16:55I'm not a big platform for a long time.
16:59I was like, not even an open toe, but I've like kind of now I'm feeling it a little more.
17:03Yeah, I like a closed toe.
17:04I like it.
17:05Yeah, I like a closed toe.
17:06I, I cannot do a square toe.
17:09No, that's just oppressive.
17:10That's not me.
17:11You can't do a closed toe.
17:11I love a round toe and then no one makes a round toe.
17:14No one makes a heel that sits under your heel anymore.
17:16And it's really upsetting.
17:17You're well placed to talk about style because you do it for celebrities, which we'll get
17:21to in a minute.
17:22You do it for print and that kind of storytelling.
17:26Creating an image for the page.
17:28Yeah, and you're, you know, you're a muse and a vessel for other people's storytelling
17:33and style through being your work as a model.
17:35But let's talk specifically about interview and your approach to style with interview
17:40because you guys just, you guys do it all.
17:44You guys are like, yeah, the style is, it's eclectic and it's subversive and it's cool.
17:53And you can tell you're having fun.
17:55We do have a lot of fun.
17:56That's like the most kind of addictive thing.
17:59Yeah.
18:00It's a cuckoo, crazy, chaotic, like world.
18:02And it's fun.
18:03And it's, and we get to kind of, because we're more of like a pop culture magazine than a
18:08true fashion magazine.
18:09I think we get to kind of like, you know, use our fashion perspective, but like put
18:14it on some of the most amazing, most interesting people, most creative people in the world.
18:20And then you get a lot of eyes on it because of that.
18:22And I think that kind of like in dynamic creates for a lot of like fire.
18:26And so I don't know.
18:28I think it's a, it's a lot of fun.
18:29What is something that you regret buying?
18:31I'm curious about this question too, because I, I kind of, I've been wondering, like, are
18:36you going to have one?
18:37I can't really think of a particular item, but there are definitely things I've regretted
18:40purchasing.
18:41And most of the time it's not even necessarily like one specific thing, but it's always something
18:47I bought to prove to some other people that I was a certain way or am a certain way.
18:53It's like if I bought something because I really wanted to look hyper feminine and pretty
18:57to people, or if I bought something to like, um, I don't, it's mostly that.
19:02Like, cause I'm just like, that's so not like in line with like how I approach and see clothes.
19:12Like to me, it's like, these are extensions of a creative impulse.
19:16And if I'm buying it so that someone else thinks I'm valid or something, then it's not
19:21It goes against the very principle of what you do it for.
19:23And I look back at those pictures of myself and I'm like, why the hell am I wearing that?
19:27Guys and listeners, if you, if you weren't aware, Dara styled Hunter Schafer for her
19:33press tour for the Hunger Games.
19:35And some of these looks are just, I think they're some of the best celebrity looks that
19:38we have seen in decades.
19:42And then you have Addison Rae now.
19:44Talk about how you even go and approach crafting somebody else's style.
19:50And I know it's very interesting.
19:51You're obsessed with pop divas and like Britney.
19:54Because I know I want to talk about the Britney and Addison.
19:57I was like trying to articulate kind of like what, how I dress or how I approach clothes
20:01to like my friend.
20:02And I was like, it's sort of like avant-garde next door.
20:05Like, you know, I think that's where the Britney comes in.
20:08It's like, it's, it's something that's, I love the bizarre.
20:11I love the challenging.
20:12I love the like extreme, but I, I never wanted to kind of like be something that no one can
20:18understand.
20:19I love that.
20:19It can kind of like, even my mom could like love it, even though it's a little weird to
20:24her.
20:24You know, like I like that it balances those two things.
20:27And, and that's kind of how I approach myself.
20:31But it's, it's how I approached that tour with Hunter.
20:34And, and I think, cause it was sort of like, I had never done red carpet before.
20:40I kind of didn't want to do, I was very scared of it and nervous about it.
20:43And, and, but I love her.
20:45She's like my sis.
20:46I love her.
20:47She's one of my best friends.
20:48And like, I met, we met really early on when we both were just starting out modeling in
20:55like 2017.
20:56And so when she asked, I just was like, yeah, let's see, let's try.
21:01Why not?
21:01This could be fun.
21:02Let's like, see, we'll do a tour and we'll see.
21:04And when we were doing it, it kind of was like, she's super artistic and super creative
21:09and loves fashion and was going to be a fashion designer before she started acting.
21:13And so she gets it, really understands it and also wants to push it.
21:19But both of us kind of like, I think, you know, she's, it's still like an actress at
21:24a press tour doing a job and she has to like look a certain way and be a certain way to
21:29kind of like fulfill.
21:30Right.
21:30It's also that thing you spoke about, about being like accessible too.
21:33Like, like those photos go everywhere.
21:36It's a wide audience and, and everybody is going to see that.
21:40And so you're kind of like, how do I, how do I push this, but make it so that the most
21:48amount of people will still get it because otherwise then your message is diluted and
21:52it's not clear.
21:52Like I would, I, I, I desire and prefer that that wide audience gets, gets it.
21:59You know what I mean?
22:00I would love.
22:01And get something from it too.
22:03I think it was so powerful to see.
22:04Maybe even learn something or see something they haven't seen before, or gets excited
22:08by it or any, you know, all of that is cool.
22:11Even, even if they hate it, I love that too.
22:13Well, but part of it too is like, you could tell she loved being in those photos too.
22:17So that, you know, that translates to the photos as well.
22:22But why were you scared at first?
22:24I just think like, you know, I make sort of, I, I perceive what I do as, as, you know,
22:30making an image.
22:31And, and a lot of the times in editorial, the thing does not look like that from the
22:36back or the side.
22:37There's like clips and, and pins and it's stuffed with something else inside.
22:41And you have the grace of like the camera just being right in front.
22:44And it's a very controlled.
22:46That's actually how, like, I fell in love with photography because I think, you know,
22:50I realized when I was like growing up, taking pictures of my friends is that like the whole
22:53room could look like a mess, but in this little square, it's perfect.
22:57And it's like the fairy tale that you always dreamed could be in that little frame, even
23:01if the world's a mess outside.
23:03And so that's kind of why I was scared.
23:05I was like, I don't know if I can make something.
23:06There's no way to hide.
23:07360.
23:09It has to be perfect.
23:10You can't control.
23:11And, and so, I mean, that's kind of like a big thing I learned is like, you have to pick
23:15something and make some and choose a look that absolutely sort of stands still on its
23:20own.
23:21And it's perfect from every angle and every, there's, cause it's such an out of control
23:26scenario.
23:26It's so chaotic and insane.
23:28And like, there's a million people and everyone's yelling and it's very quick.
23:32It ends like in five minutes and the five minutes feel like five seconds.
23:36And so it has to kind of like be able to live without you touching it, you know, just like
23:40you just go and you're like a cutout.
23:42Yeah.
23:42But I mean, it was really fun though too.
23:45What's been your favorite look that you've done with Hunter?
23:47Oh my God.
23:48Oh, it's so hard.
23:50I know, there's good ones.
23:51I love, we did this like Margiela look for, it was like a photo call.
23:58It was actually like such a funny thing to wear for a photo call because it was like
24:01so low key and it was just like her sitting for interviews and stuff.
24:04But it was like a paper hat from Margiela and like a latex pencil skirt and this kind
24:08of, yeah.
24:09And then this big insane green bow, like giant bow coat.
24:13And then the Peston Prada one we did that was like the gold was my favorite cause I
24:18love that collection.
24:19That collection.
24:20Yeah.
24:20Only, I mean, it's gotta be a Dara Hunter collab to be able to get Mrs. Prada and the
24:26Prada team to be able to remake that collection cause it was stunning.
24:31Okay.
24:32Let's talk about Addison who is your newest client and just so fun and gorgeous.
24:40And what you guys have been doing is, I just think it's, yeah, it's the essence of that
24:44Britney era that we were missing that energy and you're giving it to the children.
24:51It's like you're bringing it.
24:52Yeah.
24:52The VMA look with the.
24:54Oh yeah.
24:57Yeah.
24:57Kind of padded bra freaked a lot of people out.
25:00Yes.
25:00But that's a good thing.
25:01No, I, yes.
25:03Absolutely.
25:03It's the VMAs.
25:04Yeah.
25:05And they didn't get that bra at all.
25:06And it must've been a full circle moment for you.
25:09If you're a Britney fan, you must've like loved.
25:12Being there was crazy.
25:13I was like, we're at the VMAs.
25:15Yeah.
25:16I used to like record them on VHS as like, oh my God, aging myself boots.
25:20But like I used to record them on VHS and then rewatch them over and over and over and
25:23over and over again.
25:24And I remember even like the night of the Britney Madonna kiss with Christina.
25:28Like, um, I was like not going to watch it cause I was like, yeah, Britney's not going
25:32to be there this year.
25:32It was already in the news.
25:33She was not going to show up.
25:34And then my dad like called me.
25:36He's like, you have to come here.
25:37Britney's on.
25:37Like, I love your dad.
25:40And the veil came up and I was like, oh yeah, I don't know.
25:44I, I think, and then like, you know, like Gaga and no nine with the blood.
25:48Like I just, and the meat dress.
25:50I just love, you know, I love pop culture moments like that.
25:53I think it's so fun and, and, and interesting.
25:56And I think you can like, kind of say a lot in that moment.
26:00That's kind of, I don't know.
26:01It feels like you're trying to do every outing with her is a moment to be able to.
26:05You'd hope so.
26:08Yeah.
26:09And I, I think that's kind of the fun of a pop star is like, or a singer and a musician
26:14is like, it's all encompassing and the, and it's cause it is them.
26:18It's not a character in a movie.
26:20It's not, you know, it's kind of, it's embodied all the time.
26:23And so there's something really fun about kind of performing with clothes in that way.
26:26It feels a little bit like you're giving an education as well,
26:29because you're thinking about the VMAs and the canon of the VMAs
26:33and how people show up to the VMAs.
26:34It became a gown show.
26:36Right.
26:36And that's so boring.
26:37Well, it's not, I love a gown.
26:39I really do.
26:40I really wish to be in a gown every day of my life.
26:41But like, I just feel like when I think of the VMAs, I don't think of formality.
26:45I think of people who are provocative and kind of like doing something that
26:50might rub people the wrong way.
26:52Yes.
26:52I mean, if there ever was an award show where you just like put a middle finger up
26:58and be like, this is what I'm doing.
26:59It's the VMAs, you know, it's not the Oscars.
27:01I'm going to make it a little nasty.
27:02You're going to make it nasty.
27:05What is your repeat buy?
27:07I mean, I, this is actually something that I know you've got,
27:10because you have, you really lean into a signature.
27:13You have the red lip.
27:14Right now you have the yellow hair, but you've had, you know,
27:17black hair and you've stuck with that.
27:19There's always a pantyhose, a sheen of the pantyhose.
27:23Oh, that's my repeat.
27:24Yeah, that's the repeat buy is the tights.
27:28I mean, you know, whatever, like the Wolfords are the best ones,
27:30but they just rip and you can't, you can't, like, it's not sustainable.
27:34So like buy, you know, $100 pair of tights for every day.
27:38So like the Calzedonia really do the job.
27:41And then like a sheer, like a 15 or a 20 den, you know, and like, yeah, all that.
27:46What else do you buy in multiples?
27:48The pumps, the Manolos.
27:49I buy so many.
27:50It's not, it's really unhealthy.
27:52Really?
27:52How many are you?
27:54Oh, girl, I don't, I don't know, but I've been told to stop.
27:58I mean, in your closet, like, can you, can you, they're just on the,
28:03they're like all over the floor.
28:04I like live in my shoes.
28:06It's just like all over the place.
28:09But I like, I like the button earring on repeat.
28:12So where do you find these ones?
28:13This I found, uh, last time I went to Paris.
28:17Or I went to Paris in the summer and I went to the flea market and there's that store,
28:21Chez Sarah, you know, the store that like, it's like a long railroad style store that
28:25has like an amazing, just like La Croix, like Saint Laurent, Angara, whatever, every amazing
28:31designer you could ever.
28:32And then they had like in the front of the store, all these dead stock, like enamel earrings,
28:37$10 each.
28:38I bought every single color.
28:39Every single color that they had.
28:41Cause I was like, that's my earring.
28:42That's it.
28:44But I go to the flea market here on like 77th street.
28:48I love that.
28:49I love the Grand Bazaar.
28:50And then you can go to Barney Greengrass and get bagels and lox after.
28:53It's like, it's a perfect New York.
28:56That's where I get all my jewelry too.
28:58I like, like, yeah, I like clothes that don't look like they're from anywhere.
29:02I don't know, you know, sort of like, where did that come from?
29:04It doesn't look like a certain designer or something.
29:07Like, I love that.
29:08Shopping vintage is, you've got to, I'm not saying you have to do it with every outfit
29:12and every piece, but it really is the way to kind of craft individuality.
29:15If you just like kind of shop what's in store, you'll know, you know.
29:19But even like really basic, like I love like Uniqlo a lot.
29:22And so like sort of those like vintage clothes and then Uniqlo clothes,
29:25like all the clothes that don't look like they're from anywhere.
29:27They're just kind of like clothes.
29:28I have two more questions.
29:30Well, firstly, we need to talk about what your dream buy is.
29:34Oh my God.
29:34What is the thing that you cover and that you want and you...
29:38Is there a Holy Grail?
29:39A vintage thing or...
29:41The thing is like all the things that I wish I could buy.
29:44It's like, they don't really like exist.
29:46Like, you know, like shoes in my size and like this, like I love 70s heels and like
29:50Charles Jourdan and like, uh, Gerolini shoes and like Halston shoes and stuff.
29:54And like, I love those, but they never, they don't exist in my size.
29:57So my Grail is like something that doesn't exist, but it's fine.
30:00Um, I'm trying to think of like a specific thing that I love.
30:05You know what I really, really want is like a 2009 Christophe Descartes and like Balmain
30:10shoulder padded blazer.
30:11That's great.
30:11I f***ing love those.
30:13They were tight.
30:14Like the cut was...
30:16That like, I just...
30:17And then with the ripped jeans, it's...
30:20With the acid wash jeans, I just...
30:21Where is Christophe Descartes?
30:23That was an amazing, that was a fun moment.
30:26It's so sexy.
30:27The last sort of segment is about your latest thing, latest good buy.
30:32What have you bought recently?
30:34I actually just bought some Juniors.
30:36Okay.
30:36Yeah, I bought, um, that's like the striped t-shirt with the big
30:39kind of circle pattern.
30:41Circles on it.
30:42And then there was a black one.
30:43I bought both of them because I was like, I don't know which one I'll like.
30:45And I'll probably keep both.
30:46But only you could put that off.
30:47That would look, I would look like an absolute clown in that.
30:50But yes, you, it's for you.
30:52Yeah, I like that.
30:53It's like, I could wear it like with jeans.
30:55It's like a t-shirt.
30:55Yeah, that's your t-shirt.
30:56It's kind of casual, but it's like silly.
30:58Yes.
30:59By the way, guys, this is the most un-casual t-shirt ever.
31:02And you wouldn't...
31:02But it's, that star is...
31:04But it has a, you know, French striped shirt vibe.
31:07Yes.
31:07But it has like giant circular shoulders.
31:10Yes.
31:10Dara, I honestly, I know I say this every episode, but I really could speak to you forever.
31:15I want to talk more.
31:16I love this.
31:17I know.
31:18It's so fun.
31:18Yeah.
31:19And your like love of fashion and your optimism around it and how you,
31:23I really feel like you feel like it could change the world.
31:27Like the way you dress and style.
31:29Well, not the way I dress, but the way one dresses.
31:32Yeah.
31:32And it's so optimistic.
31:33I really do mean it as like, it's a gift.
31:36Like not just to like the people you dress, but also the way you dress.
31:39It's just putting something out in the world that's joyful.
31:43Yeah.
31:43I mean, I think, you know, and it's not necessarily always joyful,
31:47but I feel very, you know, I feel so joyful when I talk about fashion,
31:50when I think about fashion.
31:51To me, it's just like any emotion that I have can come out through this.
31:55And I think that's like, you know, I think whatever that is for you,
31:59you need to find.
32:00And if that, you know, that's your channel to communicate
32:04whatever emotions you're going through.
32:06I think that's like a valuable thing to learn about yourself.
32:08And for me, it is clothes and it's, and it's images.
32:12So, yeah.
32:14Dara, thank you for being a guest on The Goodbye.
32:16You're like a dream.
32:18This was Harper's Bazaar's The Goodbye.
32:20Goodbye.
32:21Goodbye.
32:22Bye.
32:22Bye.
32:38Bye.
