Residents living in Perth’s most northern corridor are calling on the government to build a hospital to serve its rapidly booming population. Yanchep and Two Rocks locals say in 2019 they were promised by the then Health Minister, Roger Cook, that a hospital would likely to be built in the next five years, but it appears to have dropped off the state government’s to-do list. And with an election fast-approaching, residents are pushing for a commitment.

00:00On the streets of Ganship, a potential hospital is a hot topic.
00:07Well we definitely need one. It's been years I think people have been saying we need one.
00:12We certainly do need a hospital.
00:14If you get a snake bite or something, time is definitely not on your side there.
00:20For Ganship local Sue Dash, who's dealing with her own health issues while in remission from cancer,
00:26she would benefit from a hospital closer to home.
00:29Well I'd have to take potluck.
00:31If it was a real emergency I would have to think well am I going to get there in time?
00:36Which is, yes, it can be quite frustrating.
00:39The Residents' Association says conversations about a hospital in Ganship date back to 2013.
00:45I think we have been ignored.
00:47And in 2019 they met the then Health Minister, Roger Cook,
00:51and were told one was likely to be built in the next five years but would be driven by population growth.
00:57Around 13,000 people live in Ganship.
01:00But according to City of Monoroo forecasting, it's on track to reach almost 38,000 by 2046.
01:07These things do take time. We appreciate that.
01:11But there seems to be a bureaucratic bungling in terms of getting things done.
01:17The nearest hospital to Ganship is Joondalup Health Campus, an almost 30km journey away.
01:23But the City is concerned the wait times here will continue to blow out
01:27as it caters for the entire population north of Joondalup.
01:31And you've got to remember in the next few years we've got East Monoroo being built,
01:36which is another 150,000 residents.
01:39And in East Monoroo all of those residents will feed into Joondalup Hospital for their health care as well.
01:44The City of Monoroo told the ABC planning documents show a site next to Ganship train station
01:50is earmarked for a hospital.
01:52In a statement, a state government spokesperson confirmed it owns the lot
01:56but didn't say whether it's for a hospital.
01:59It also said it's continuing to monitor demand for health services,
02:03leaving the community concerned for the future of health care.
