00:00Let me get to everything about the National Football League.
00:05We start off with a potential situation with the quarterback of the Philadelphia Eagles,
00:10Jalen Hurts, suffered a concussion on the field on Sunday in their loss against the
00:15Washington Commanders.
00:16He's currently in the concussion protocol.
00:18No word yet as to whether or not he's going to play this week.
00:21So it's potentially a week-to-week thing.
00:24We know how these concussions go.
00:25Could be longer, could be shorter, could even play this week.
00:28But no question about it.
00:29Right now, the Commanders seem to be in a position to even maybe play Philadelphia one
00:34more time in the first round of the playoffs.
00:37That would be the setup.
00:38And it's really hard to beat a team three times in a row.
00:39But the Commanders yesterday ended up coming back to get the victory.
00:43Jayden Daniels, five touchdown passes.
00:45Here's Nick Sirianni on the status of Hurts.
00:48Yeah, I haven't talked to the medical staff yet, so I don't have any updates on any of
00:52that stuff.
00:53It seemed like he wanted to go in and then he came out.
00:55Can you kind of walk us through what happened there on the sideline?
00:58Yeah, anything that has anything to do with the head is out of our hands there.
01:04Kind of a weird game where you scored 33 points with your backup.
01:07The defense forces five turnovers, but you still lose.
01:10Just curious what your biggest takeaway is from it.
01:12Yeah, I think at the end of the day, I have to be able to watch the tape and tell you
01:15everything what happened.
01:16But just sloppy.
01:17You know, sloppy with penalties, sloppy with too many men on the field, sloppy with our
01:22fundamentals.
01:23And when you play a good football team like we played today and you're sloppy regardless
01:26of how many turnovers you force, you know, it's going to be hard to win.
01:32And I think, you know, what I said to those guys is like when it's sloppy with every piece
01:36of that, that's always going to be on me as the head coach.
01:38All right.
01:39We'll see what the Eagles do moving forward.
01:41Again, they're still in a position to get a first round by in the NFC.
01:45Now, meanwhile, all the Dallas Cowboys had to do is has their season go up in smoke to
01:49start playing well, I guess, because that's what's going on.
01:52The Cowboys stay alive barely in the NFC playoff chase.
01:56They beat the Buccaneers 26 to 24 as Cooper Rush and that offense of the Cowboys has woken
02:03up in the winter.
02:04It's been a sleepy September and October, but for whatever reason, they've come alive.
02:08Bucks no problem on offense.
02:09In fact, they had a chance to win this game late, but they fell short.
02:12Meanwhile, they no longer control their own destiny.
02:15They were a four point favorite going into the game and the Cowboys win the game outright,
02:18which has Todd Bowles and Baker Mayfield supremely upset.
02:22I mean, we lost.
02:25It's disappointing.
02:26All three phases plus coaching.
02:27We got to coach it better.
02:29We got to play better on special teams.
02:30We got to play better offensively and defensively.
02:33We lost.
02:34We fell back in the pack.
02:35We got to eat it.
02:36Can't spend too much time on it.
02:37We had our chances.
02:38We had our chances just like everybody else, but it's a long season.
02:42We got two more games to go.
02:43We got to take care of us and then let everything else take care of itself.
02:46I said it all along.
02:48This group will not quit and I'll be damned if anybody does.
02:51That's the standard that we try and set.
02:55It'd be nice to not have to be in that situation if we would have taken care of business earlier
02:58in the game, but it comes down to little things late in the game and trying to execute and
03:02gave ourselves a chance.
03:04Defense gave us a chance as well.
03:05So we just got to execute.
03:06I mean, I didn't learn anything new about the fight that we have.
03:09It's never been a question.
03:12For me, it's next man up mentality.
03:14I mean, overall, it's about the ball.
03:17I think everybody needs to learn that.
03:20It's obvious, I know, but even when you have two hands on it, you've got to be overprotective
03:24with it.
03:25And that starts with me too.
03:28Right now, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers are going to need some help to get in the playoffs.
03:32By the way, quick correction, Cowboys, even though they won last night, eliminated from
03:35the NFC.
03:36All right, the beat rolls on for the Minnesota Vikings.
03:38They're now 13 and two on the season.
03:41Who had that one at the beginning of the year?
03:43Very close, exciting game right down to the finish.
03:45They beat Seattle on the road, 27 to 24.
03:48The Arizona Cardinals at one point led the NFC West.
03:51They were eliminated yesterday by the Carolina Panthers, 36 to 30.
03:56Cardinals were favored.
03:57Chuba Hubbard had a big game on the ground.
03:58Also, the Miami Dolphins, I believe, if I'm not wrong about them, they're still alive
04:02in the NFC.
04:04They beat San Francisco.
04:05They've been eliminated, 29 to 17.
04:0749ers were favored.
04:08And the Rams go across the country and beat the Jets.
04:11It was cold.
04:12It was ugly.
04:13I think I saw that the Jets didn't punt once, but scored nine points.
04:16Is that right?
04:17So, 14 to nine was the final there as the Rams are now the heavy favorite to win the
04:22NFC West.
04:23Meanwhile, the Detroit Lions get back on track.
04:25They beat the Bears, 34 to 17.
04:27Also, Josh Allen and the Bills, they improved to 12 and three.
04:31They were scared a little bit against New England.
04:33Not sure how that happened, 24 to 21.
04:35The Bengals are still very much alive in their playoffs.
04:38How about this?
04:3924 to six, the final.
04:41They got a late touchdown to put things away with the Cleveland Browns.
04:44Joe Burrow says winning and staying alive is where it's at.
04:48We've had great energy in practice.
04:52Guys flying around, dancing, very vocal.
04:57Practice has been fun the last couple weeks.
04:59I think it really starts with the defense.
05:01The DBs are always bringing great energy at practice.
05:06That's not really my personality.
05:07I'm more of a, what do I have to do on this play, trying to get motions and shifts and
05:13trying to operate.
05:14And so when you're in practice and you feel your DBs and your defense,
05:19flying around, being vocal, making plays, makes practice fun.
05:25Have you ever thrown a touchdown pass, fallen flat on your face?
05:29That one was crazy, that one was crazy.
05:32No, I have not.
05:33My brother sent me a picture of it after a game.
05:37I might have to post that one.
05:38I mean, it looked like you were even amazed when you got up.
05:41I was parallel.
05:42I didn't know, I don't know how I threw it, but that one was pretty cool.
05:46Burrow having probably the most underrated season for a quarterback right now in the
05:50NFL.
05:51All right, Michael Pennix Jr., his first career start is a win and a blowout, 34-7 against
05:55the New York Giants.
05:56My gosh, the Giants are having one of those seasons to forget.
06:00They also were rooting very heavily for the Las Vegas Raiders yesterday so they could
06:04get the number one pick in the draft, and they came through.
06:06The Raiders beat the Jaguars 19-14, so right now it would be the Giants at the number one
06:11overall pick.
06:12Of course, on Saturday football, Kansas City won 27-19 over the Texans, and the Ravens
06:17have taken control of the NFC North.
06:19They beat the Steelers 34-17.
06:20All right, college football playoffs on Saturday.
06:23I was pumping this up all week long.
06:25Is the best weekend ever of college football and pro football together?
06:27It was not.
06:28I ain't going to lie to you.
06:29Those games were horrible on Saturday, 42-17, Ohio State beats Tennessee.
06:35My gosh, the SEC had a tough time here.
06:38We're playing all these narratives as to who should be in and who should be out, but naturally
06:42Tennessee should not have gone forward, I guess you could say.
06:46Also, Texas picks up a win, 38-24 over Clemson.
06:50That game final, Texas covers the spread there easily.
06:53Penn State also wins 38-10.
06:56That game was a blowout, so really nothing to discuss as far as that is concerned.
07:01But I would say the one positive for Penn State is not only did they win, but they got
07:06a lot of turnovers in that game, and that was what James Franklin was happy about.
07:10When you look at the stats that we focus on, the takeaway battle was big.
07:15Three turnovers to one, explosive play battle, we won that.
07:21Third down battle, we won that.
07:23We tied the sack battle.
07:26The penalty battle, we won.
07:30That's a whole other conversation.
07:33And then the middle eight, we won the middle eight.
07:35So a ton of cool stuff.
07:36I can go on and on and on, but we got a team win, led from our defense in the beginning
07:43of the game, but at the end of the game, it was a team win, offense, defense, and special
07:48teams.
07:49So...
07:50Myrtle Beach Bowl going on right now as we speak.
07:52First football game live on Newswire in a really long time.
07:56We have a live game going on right now.
07:58UTSA opened up as eight-point favorites.
08:00I guess some players are out for Coastal Carolina, because it's now 12-1.
08:04Also Northern Illinois plays Fresno State in the Idaho Potato Bowl later.
08:08Free agent signings.
08:09Jock Peterson signs a one-year deal with the Texas Rangers.
08:12Sean Manias going back to the Mets on a three-year deal.
08:15Phillies and Marlins made a trade yesterday.
08:17Jesus Lozada goes to Philadelphia.
08:19The Nationals have traded for Nathaniel Lowe and Walker Bueller, according to reports,
08:24is signing a one-year deal with the Boston Red Sox.
08:26Welcome back to Newswire here on Sports Grid.
08:28I actually have a lot of news to go over here on the show today.
08:30I didn't think that would be the case here just a couple days before Hanukkah, Christmas.
08:34Pat Evans is with us from Legal Sports Report.
08:36He's getting ready for the holidays as well.
08:38And so happy holidays, Pat.
08:39We've got some fun stories to review.
08:41Let's start off with a state in the South, Georgia.
08:44Hey, look at here, maybe a possibility, maybe a possibility that sports betting comes to
08:50Georgia in the next year or so.
08:51I mean, yeah.
08:52This is, again, something you and I talk about all the time the past couple of years is because
08:56Georgia has been one of the states that seems like it could get it done.
09:00Of course, they run into issues every year that kind of break it up and it doesn't get
09:04done.
09:06But earlier this month, that PrizePix, the daily fantasy sports company that offers a
09:11suite of Pick'em products, opened a new...
09:13They hadn't opened it.
09:14It was a ribbon cutting for their new headquarters in Atlanta and Governor Brian Kemp showed
09:18up and he said, you know what, I've been neutral on sports betting.
09:23I remain that way.
09:24That's my, you know, I'm paraphrasing, of course, but this is, you know, I'm going to
09:28stay neutral.
09:29However, if you're going to do it, let's put this money to good use and kind of outline
09:34some things like K through 12 education and, you know, other uses like that.
09:40So it's more of, it's not necessarily an endorsement by him, for sure, because he says he's still
09:45neutral, but it is an indication that he is certainly open to the discussion and we'll
09:51see where it goes.
09:52Last year, there was a great bipartisan collaboration to get a bill in the Senate going.
09:58It eventually fell apart because there were different factions that said, you know, we
10:02need a constitutional amendment, which requires way more votes to pass, and so it fell apart.
10:08This year, the senators seem to be kind of putting it in the House's court.
10:13If the House wants to do it, then they'll take it up when it gets over.
10:17So kind of punting it from that point of view, but I expect something in the House to happen.
10:21And yeah, so the governor neutral, but sees positives and, you know, that comes on the
10:26heels of an op-ed we saw from a sponsor earlier this month, or it might have been last month,
10:32but that said, you know, hey, the voters that turned it from a Democrat state in 2020 in
10:36the presidential election and turned it to a Republican state in 2024, that's the demographics
10:42that love sports betting.
10:44Let's give them sports betting.
10:45So it's going to be a fun, fun 2025 legislative session in Georgia.
10:48Yeah, indeed.
10:49And that's, that would be one really big state bordering my state here in Florida.
10:54All right.
10:55Not surprising here.
10:56And you have an article about this over at legalsportsreport.com.
10:58There's a possibility, you know, again, a possibility because a bill has been introduced.
11:03One of the more peculiar items to bet on, to me, all these years has been the election.
11:08And it does seem like this one non-sports event, there's a chance that this ends up
11:12going away.
11:14But I guess the question I would ask, Pat, is why, why is this being introduced to get
11:18rid of it?
11:19I get it.
11:20But why are they saying it?
11:21Yeah, I think there's a lot of integrity concerns around election betting, you know, a lot of
11:26money going into something that can have such a huge consequence on everything.
11:30That's kind of, I think, the main, you know, operative thought behind this.
11:37Representative Andrea Salinas and Jamie Raskin have introduced a bill that is the same as
11:42Jeff Merkley's bill to ban election betting.
11:46You know, there was a long fight kind of back from 2022, the trading platform, Kelshi,
11:55wanted to offer election betting, which is basically a stock platform versus actual,
12:00you know, sportsbook betting in that sense.
12:02So you buy into it, and it creates a stock market like vibe, and it can be done nationwide.
12:09And it got approval in October or September, October around there.
12:15Between then and Election Day, it had $900 million wagered on it on U.S. House, Senate
12:20and the presidential election.
12:22So it is a, you know, interested market there that exists for this product.
12:28But yeah, the politicians are kind of saying, wait a second, this isn't something we kind
12:31of want people to bet on.
12:33That seems like you're betting on America's future in a weird way in that sense.
12:38So they're taking it to potentially get rid of it, and we'll see where it goes from there.
12:45Okay.
12:46So the biggest story that we have to talk about today is kind of like a breaking story.
12:51But we're, you know, both Pat and I, by the way, we're trying to make heads or tails of
12:55this one.
12:56This is a difficult one.
12:57So there is a cryptocurrency exchange called Crypto.com.
13:02I'm very familiar with them.
13:03I'll leave it at that.
13:05Crypto.com.
13:06They're a cryptocurrency exchange.
13:09And they made an announcement today that essentially you could have what's called sports event
13:17trading on their app.
13:20Now, Pat, what is the difference between sports event trading and sports betting?
13:28Because they're framing this, interestingly enough, in a way where you can bet as from
13:33what I see on the app right here, any team you can bet on to win the Super Bowl for a
13:38certain amount of money, $20, $10, $5.
13:44And in the end, you win 100 if you win the Super Bowl.
13:46It's like a straight bet.
13:47So naturally, some purchases are less than others.
13:50For example, the bills, you buy them for 20.
13:53If they win, you win 100.
13:54So it's five to one.
13:55Same thing with the Chiefs.
13:56The Dolphins are 2%.
13:57So it's two bucks to win 100 is a much longer odd.
14:01But I'm saying something that's not true.
14:03It's not betting, though, according to them.
14:04It's not betting.
14:05It's sports event trading.
14:07How in the world did this pop up like this?
14:10And very specifically, what is like California and Texas going to have to say about this?
14:16Maybe it's also in places where you can use crypto.com.
14:20My understanding is I think it's throughout the country, United States, you can use it.
14:23So a lot to unpack here for me, and I guess I'm going to probably need more time understanding
14:28this.
14:29I mean, hey, it just popped up right before the show started.
14:33I came on here just trying to wrap my head around it myself.
14:35But it is actually very similar to the election betting.
14:38It is registered and regulated by the Commodity Futures Trading Commission.
14:44So it is a nationwide thing.
14:46It is basically, again, a stock market like purchase.
14:49So this is something that people have looked at.
14:52And when Robin Hood started talking about offering sports betting, potentially, it's
14:57great for futures bets, and futures prop bets, and season win totals, and whatever you want
15:02to say, because you can buy into it and then watch it go throughout the year and see what
15:06happens.
15:07Yeah, so it's not necessarily straight betting.
15:11I would expect kind of similar thought processes behind what the politicians behind the banning
15:18of the election betting is doing, because it is an interesting kind of workaround from
15:24the state by state level regulations for sports betting that we've seen pop up over the last
15:30eight years.
15:32Yeah, I mean, as you said, you're still trying to wrap your head around.
15:35I am, too.
15:36I know as soon as I get off the show here, I'm going to have to go kind of bang heads
15:42together with our team and figure out exactly what we need to do, because what a day to
15:47do this before the Christmas holiday to bring this news out there.
15:50And as a news reporter, I have to figure it out.
15:53So, yeah, kind of your guess is as good as mine right now as to how it's going to be
15:58received by customers and states and see what it goes.
16:03But it is federally regulated at this point.
16:05It sounds like from the CFTC.
16:07So we'll see.
16:10It's going to be fun to watch.
16:11I'm not super happy that it's happening over the holidays, though.
16:17And it's technically it is not sports betting, but I got news for you.
16:20In states where sports betting is not legal, we have not heard the last.
16:24I mean, listen, I'm for it, obviously, because any sports betting for me is good.
16:28But in states where it's not legal, I cannot imagine that this is just going to be a
16:32simple, OK, workaround.
16:34And then all of a sudden it just becomes can we use crypto dot com in California, in
16:38Texas, in Utah, a place like I don't know, this is I will have to circle back on this
16:43hopefully next week. Sorry to ruin your holiday.
16:45All right. Finally, another sports book coming to Kentucky.
16:48I believe this is their ninth. Is that right?
16:50Yeah. Prime Sports, a very small sports book in mostly Ohio, is launching in Kentucky.
16:57And it's a very niche, you know, kind of for whales and sharp bettors.
17:03You know, there's no limits and the like.
17:05So they're kind of, you know, kind of building out from their Ohio.
17:08I think they're in New Jersey as well.
17:09So see what the customer base is in Kentucky.
17:12I think that's a super interesting state potentially because of all the horse racing.
17:16So maybe that's what they see in terms of, you know, ideal bettors.
17:19But yeah, another state, another sports book for Kentucky.
17:23So that's fun, fun little launch news here over the holidays.
17:27All right. Well, Pat, have a happy holiday to you and your family.
17:30Thanks again for coming on Newswire.
17:31And you and I, I'm sure we'll talk again after. Thanks for coming on.
17:34Yeah. Thank you as always, Craig.
