00:00We've got a lot to get to, so let's get started.
00:05Some very popular names in the NFL let go today, but first, we start off with a contract
00:09extension and it is a mega one for CD Lamb.
00:13He signs that four-year contract extension that makes him the highest non-paid quarterback
00:18in the history of the NFL.
00:20A wide receiver, he is now the highest paid, hundreds of million dollars, of course, guaranteed.
00:24In fact, I believe the number is right at 100.
00:27And so Lamb will report to camp and he will start playing for the Dallas Cowboys immediately.
00:32We'll see if this changes the trajectory for Jamar Chase, who is practicing but does not
00:37have a new contract, or even Brandon Iyuka, who we'll touch on in just a minute.
00:40Meanwhile, in the preseason, if you watch some of the games, you've noticed that they
00:44went to a digital first down marker, meaning that they could figure things out like the
00:49rest of the world using digital access technology.
00:54Not going to happen.
00:55Chain Gang is back.
00:56You're going to see them on the sidelines.
00:57I don't know why.
00:58This was reported last night, but I guess they just didn't like the way that it went
01:01in the preseason.
01:02And so the Chain Gang is out.
01:03You're going to see them on the field measuring for first downs once again.
01:08Also in the National Football League, ESPN reporting that a portion of the NFL franchises
01:13can be outsourced, or as we would say, sold to public investment funds.
01:19So get ready.
01:20A portion of your favorite National Football League team may be owned by somebody else.
01:2410% is the number that Adam Schefter, as you see, put out here.
01:28And actually Saudi Arabia, we'll see if they get involved in some NFL franchises as well.
01:32As we mentioned, cut down day is today in the NFL.
01:36And several players who you may be familiar with their names have already been cut and
01:39more are coming.
01:40Bailey Zappi, remember him?
01:42Played for the New England Patriots for a little bit last year when they figured out
01:44Mac Jones couldn't play.
01:46They've waived him.
01:47So he is out.
01:48They have a good starter, as they think they do, in Brissett.
01:51Backup in Drake May, or you can flip-flop those.
01:53Bailey Zappi is out.
01:55He'll get picked up by somebody else.
01:56Kendrick Bourne, also for the New England Patriots, going to start the season on the
01:59PUP list.
02:00So he's ineligible to play in the first four games.
02:02Patriots really up against it to start the season.
02:04Carolina Panthers make an interesting move today.
02:07Jonathan Brooks, who was thought to potentially be ready by week one or week two, is not going
02:10to be.
02:12So he will start the season.
02:14After drafting him on the physically unable to perform, the Panthers will not be using
02:18him in the first month of the season.
02:19Also the Chiefs will keep pass rusher Charles Amenehu on the PUP list as well.
02:23He tore his ACL in the AFC title game last season.
02:27Also, other players we won't see in the first month.
02:29Not a huge surprise.
02:30TJ Hawkinson is going to be out for the first month with a torn ACL.
02:34He hurt that last year.
02:36The Browns released Siaka Ika, their third-round pick, just from last season.
02:39The New York Giants have decided to part ways with former Pro Bowler Alan Robinson and also
02:45wide receiver Isaiah Hodge.
02:47And Uchenna Nwosu has an MCL sprain, so the Seahawks have traded for Travis Gibson.
02:53The Washington Commanders have also made news today.
02:56No, they're not changing their name back to the you-know-whats, but they do have new stadium
03:00rights.
03:01Northwest Stadium is the new commander's name for their stadium, and this is effective going
03:06into this season.
03:07So when the commanders open up at home, you're going to see this as Northwest Stadium in
03:12the future.
03:13I got to get used to calling it that immediately.
03:15Connor Stallions, remember him?
03:17He was the one accused of stealing signs and being on the sideline on behalf of the University
03:22of Michigan, but doing it for somebody else.
03:25He has a Netflix special out right now saying that he did not obtain signals through in-person
03:31scouting.
03:32He made the claims in April during a video with NCAA investigators, and you can see it
03:36on Netflix if you want to watch it.
03:37It's called Sign Stealers.
03:39He said that he didn't direct anyone to go to a game.
03:43And basically, he's denying all involvement.
03:45You'll have to watch it to see for yourself if you believe him.
03:48The Big Ten has revealed the football tiebreakers for their 18-team conference.
03:53Here we go again.
03:54The tied teams will be compared based on head-to-head matchups.
03:57Makes sense if they tie.
04:00Tied teams will then be compared to record against all common conference opponents, okay?
04:04Sounds just like the SEC.
04:07And then from there, the tied teams will be compared based on record against common opponents
04:11with the best conference record and proceeding through the common conference opponents based
04:14on their order of finish with the conference standings.
04:16Did you get all that?
04:18Probably not.
04:19Read about it online would be my suggestion.
04:22Lane Kiffin has hired his brother to coach at Ole Miss, Chris.
04:27He's going to be joining them.
04:28They play Furman on Saturday.
04:30They're going to win, I would suppose.
04:32George is running back.
04:33Roderick Robinson has been injured.
04:36No word, by the way, on Trevor Etienne, if they're going to play him.
04:40They play against Clemson in the first game of Saturday's big slate of college football.
04:45That's a noon Eastern kickoff Saturday.
04:47Bryce Harper walked off yesterday for the Philadelphia Phillies.
04:51Josh Hader takes the loss.
04:52RBI single in the 10th inning as they beat the Astros by a final of 3-2.
04:58Some feel there's a potential World Series preview remains to be seen.
05:01Phillies get game one there.
05:03Cubs swipe eight bags yesterday, 21 hits over the Pirates, 18-8 the final.
05:09Eight stolen bases is their most in 100 years as the Cubs are trying to hang on for the
05:15playoffs.
05:16We'll finish this off with Paul Skeens and the Pirates again today.
05:18The Cardinals have placed Wilson Contreras on the injured list.
05:21They're hoping he will return this season.
05:23It's the second time that he was placed on the injured list.
05:26He broke a finger after being hit with a pitch last week.
05:29And Danny Jansen made his debut again yesterday for the same team, or I should say a different
05:34team in the same box score and ended up the game.
05:36Remember, he was that guy who caught one game in June and now played with a different team
05:41in August.
05:42Same box score, two different teams, in case you missed it.
05:45All right, the U.S. Open.
05:46Tennis is underway.
05:47Let's get to the very latest.
05:48There's a new seating policy, by the way, that allows fans to sit wherever they want.
05:52Imagine that.
05:54And right now it's sort of a little bit different, I think, under this new policy with people
05:59with tickets at certain sections can move all the way down on courts eight and 16, wherever
06:05they want during play.
06:07And so they don't have to just like wait during matches when they're in between timeouts and
06:11things like that.
06:12In fact, Djokovic opened up his bid for a 25th Grand Slam win with an easy win.
06:18He defeated Radu Albat 6-2, 6-4, 6-2 on Monday night.
06:25Djokovic is the second seed going into the U.S. Open.
06:28Coco Gauff also started her title defense with a win as well.
06:33She wins 6-2, 6-0.
06:36Also 16-year-old American Iva Djokovic, or Jokic, wins opening U.S. round match as well.
06:43She's 16 years old.
06:44She beat Magda Lynette 6-4, 6-3.
06:48Sports betting news.
06:49DraftKings is now officially open for business in Wisconsin.
06:53A brand new deal was just signed upon and approved, and they will launch in Wisconsin
06:59this week at the Flambeau Band of Lake Superior Chippewa Indians' Lake of the Torches Resort
07:08Casino.
07:10If you live there, you probably know where this is.
07:13I have no idea, but it's a cool name to say.
07:15Kaitlyn Clark and the Fever beat the Dream 84-79 yesterday.
07:19Kelsey Mitchell scored 29 points.
07:22The New York Liberty back in the win column after a tough loss over the weekend, 84-70.
07:28They end up defeating the Mercury.
07:30And the Washington Mystics beat the Storm yesterday.
07:33They went out right.
07:34They were 10.5-point underdogs in their game in the WNBA there.
07:39So we're watching all of the news in the National Football League.
07:43Naturally, some big names are on the chopping block at this point.
07:47As we mentioned, a former pro bowler, Allen Robinson, who played at such a high level
07:53for such a long time, it just simply didn't work out.
07:55Once he left the Bears, you have to wonder if his career is over.
07:59He was let go today.
08:01And also many other players will be cut, let go, and traded as well.
08:04And so while we're not rooting for this, we will keep a close eye on all of the players
08:08changing places.
08:09They still have several hours to get their rosters down to 53.
08:14But many teams in the National Football League actually have to let go of 25-30 players today.
08:18So we'll keep an eye on that for you throughout the day.
08:21And of course, on Pharrell Coast to Coast, if anything significant happens, we'll give
08:24you the latest on that as well.
08:25Sam McClellan is with us from Legal Sports Report.
08:28We'll dive into the latest National Football League responsible gambling news.
08:32Again, the league is trying to curb the illegal sports betting and their own players betting
08:37on different things.
08:39We'll dive into what the rules are this year so we understand them going into the season.
08:42But first, let's bring in Sam.
08:43You know, Sam, we heard about this last week, that DraftKings, there was this lawsuit that
08:47was potentially going to be filed about some deceptive bonuses that they were offering.
08:52Tell us more about the story here and if the lawsuit indeed is going to continue.
08:56Yeah, Craig, this is actually just one of a couple DraftKings lawsuits that we've been
09:03talking about over the last couple of weeks.
09:05Just today, you had some news come out about the NFL Players Association suing over the
09:12NFT Rainmaker marketplace, which is now offline.
09:16But this story is actually in Massachusetts, like you referred to, deceptive marketing,
09:23deceptive advertising, if you want to put it that way.
09:26This one group is essentially saying that the $1,000 signup offer that you have when
09:32you go on DraftKings basically misleads people.
09:35It gets them to sign up to the sports book and then they can't figure out how to get the
09:41money. So essentially, it's accomplishing their plan of attracting customers without
09:46actually having to shell out the money.
09:48This group, the Public Health Advocacy Institute, details in its lawsuit about these
09:53onerous playthrough requirements where you have to initially deposit $5,000 to even become
09:59eligible, then play through it about $25,000 worth of bets within 90 days to then get
10:06your $1,000 credit, which is non-refundable.
10:09So this group is really targeting this bonus.
10:12It's not just in Massachusetts.
10:14It's been in a lot of these other more recent states that have legalized sports betting.
10:19And the latest development is that now the case is going to be allowed to move to the
10:23discovery phase, which is really important.
10:25The court came out and said, DraftKings, we hear why you want us to dismiss the case, but
10:30we're not going to buy your argument.
10:31We're going to allow it to proceed.
10:33And why that's so important is because in the discovery phase, that's when this group is
10:37going to be able to press the executives at DraftKings for information on the bonus, how
10:41many people were able to sign up, what those numbers look like, which is really
10:45interesting because we rarely get information from the companies about who's actually
10:50using the bonuses, who's qualifying.
10:52We get in their earnings reports, hey, this is how much we spent on customer acquisition.
10:56This is how many new customers we acquired.
10:58And you've seen over the past couple of years that trend has gotten better for the
11:01companies. They've been spending less and acquiring more customers.
11:04Now, is that because they've been able to deceive customers like this group is alleging
11:10here? We'll have to see if that's been the case.
11:12It could be a number of other reasons, but really interesting.
11:15It could have a big impact on the broader industry as well, especially because this
11:18group is one that took down big tobacco in the 1980s.
11:22So they're kind of looking at this as sort of their watershed moment for gambling.
11:25But the wheels of justice grind slowly.
11:28So we're going to have to wait till December for the next development in the case.
11:32Yeah, at the very earliest, I would say, based on that.
11:34All right. So we're going into the NFL season.
11:36We saw suspensions with sports betting being legal coming, especially, I thought, about a
11:41year ago where a couple of players were suspended and a couple banned from the NFL.
11:48So now there's new training involved.
11:50Sam, what is this involved as far as like monitoring the players to make sure they're doing
11:54the right thing? Yeah, this is it's sort of surprising that the NFL came out and said,
12:00hey, this is the first time we're going to have in-person mandatory training for all 32
12:06teams where the coaches, players, staff, everyone will be in one room while this training
12:11happens. Talking about gambling awareness, have these several principles like don't bet on
12:16the NFL, don't have someone bet on your behalf, a proxy betting situation, don't share
12:21inside information with anybody, don't gamble while you're at a team facility or while
12:26you're traveling for work, which we've seen some players and coaches get in trouble for in
12:30the past. Don't enter a sportsbook during the season and don't play daily fantasy
12:34football games like prize picks, games like Yahoo!
12:37Fantasy. So all all core tenants that have been part of the program for a while.
12:42But this is going to be the first time that they have everyone in one room.
12:45And it's mandatory for everyone to go through this training together, which they hope will
12:49inspire more questions, more engagement.
12:51They're going to have former players at this training as well.
12:54A lot of people are kind of surprised that this wasn't required already.
12:57The NFL came out and sort of clarified that, hey, we've had all types of gambling awareness
13:01training mandatory for a very long time.
13:03This is sort of a new added layer we're putting on this.
13:07And this is the first offseason.
13:09We've almost made a full offseason without any major gambling suspensions in the NFL.
13:14Last year we had about 10 or 11.
13:15So it's a big change.
13:18Obviously, you've seen all those policies and all suspensions handed down.
13:21Maybe that's encouraging players.
13:23Maybe the NFL is just getting better at this kind of stuff.
13:26So they're doing more.
13:28It's obvious that they always want to tout that they're doing more.
13:31They've come out and said that, you know, threats towards players are up slightly.
13:36Some of that having to do with sports betting, some of it having to do with other factors
13:40as well.
13:41So it's something they're taking very seriously.
13:42They talked about all the game day monitoring that they do.
13:45They have these different agents tasked to every team, which we'd never heard about before.
13:50So they're really taking gambling seriously, at least so they say, and would expect more
13:55and more kind of in this direction as the season approaches.
13:58And they crossed their fingers for no gambling suspensions this year.
14:01Yeah.
14:02And responsible gaming is always very important.
14:05And it's just a matter of the NFL enforcing this.
14:08And it does look like quite a bit of money is being spent, Sam, to try and stop this.
14:13I mean, the NFL is worth billions and billions and billions of dollars.
14:17So they certainly have the money to do it.
14:18But at least we're seeing that there is a council involved, that they are making the
14:23effort to try and do so.
14:24Yeah, the NFL has had this relationship with the National Council on Problem Gambling pretty
14:31much ever since sports betting started to spread to other states in 2018, 2019, when
14:36the Supreme Court repealed PASPA.
14:38And this past week, they renewed their commitment for an extra three years, assigning $6.4 million
14:46to this organization, which is in charge of the National Gambling Helpline.
14:51They're the main gambling harm prevention advocate nationally.
14:54They work with a lot of inner cities on gambling awareness training.
14:58They work with Congress on legislation.
15:00They work with different states.
15:01So they're essentially the big organization that represents this.
15:05And actually, the biggest commitment in their history was the previous one the NFL gave.
15:09So now the NFL is kind of breaking its record and giving more money here.
15:13That money is going to be used to modernize the National Gambling Helpline.
15:16A lot of states have very specific helplines where if you call a certain number, you need
15:22to get rerouted to a different state.
15:24There's different numbers in different states.
15:25So they have a 1-800-GAMBLER number, which kind of unites everything there.
15:30They're going to use a lot of the money, too, to create programs in underserved communities
15:34where people are maybe more inclined to be exposed to the risks of gambling.
15:39Maybe young athletes are more inclined to be someone come to obfuscate or mess with
15:49them or try to get them to manipulate the game in some way.
15:51So that's going to be the focus of the money here in terms of the National Gambling Helpline
15:56prevention and then also creating a program for these underserved communities.
16:00So a good example for the rest of the leagues to follow, I would say.
16:04Yeah, I would agree.
16:05All right, Sam.
16:06Enjoy the rest of the week.
16:07We'll talk again soon ahead of the NFL season.
16:08Thanks for coming on.
16:09Yep.
16:10Thanks, Greg.
16:11You too.
16:12All right.
16:13Sam McQuillan with us here on Newswire.
16:14By the way, you can read all about the stories that we talk about here on the show on a daily
16:18basis over at legalsportsreport.com.
16:22Coming up next, Brady Cannon joins us as he's getting ready for week one of the National
16:26Football League.
16:27A little bit over one week away, we'll preview the Ravens and Chiefs and also get into everything
16:32happening in the National Football League.
16:35Also a couple of cuts to tell you about in the NFL.
16:38More quarterbacks being let go.
16:40Backup quarterback for the Detroit Lions, Nate Sudfeld, has been waived.
16:44So that means Hendon Hooker looks like he is the backup going into the season there.
16:52Lots of other action going on in the NFL, cuts.
16:55This is the final day that teams can do it to get down to the end.
16:58Bailey Zappi has been let go by the Wingham Patriots.
17:01It feels like the quarterbacks right now are the ones that they're deciding on.
17:05And I suppose teams look at it, and the way that they do is that if we're going to pay
17:10for a backup quarterback, we may as well go on the cheaper side and maybe bring one of
17:14these guys back on the practice squad.
17:16I'm not really sure.
17:17But either way, we'll have more updates for you throughout the day.
17:21We'll see you next time.
17:22Bye.
17:23Bye.
17:24Bye.
17:25Bye.
17:26Bye.
17:27Bye.
17:28Bye.
17:29Bye.
17:30Bye.
17:31Bye.
17:32Bye.
17:33Bye.
17:34Bye.
17:35Bye.
17:36Bye.
17:37Bye.
17:38Bye.
17:39Bye.
17:40Bye.
17:41Bye.
17:42Bye.
