00:00Torres family wines are iconic, a Spanish success story 150 years and five generations in the making.
00:15Much of their modern success is attributed to Don Miguel Torres, a vineyard visionary whose passion for the industry hasn't been watered down with time.
00:26Wine is history, wine is tradition. Can you imagine a food without, you know, a lunch without wine? It would be terrible, no? It's part of our culture.
00:35Torres vineyards like this one in Penedes, an hour from Barcelona, helped the company produce over 30 million bottles of wine per year.
00:44But its success in China came from much more than just exporting wine.
00:49Winning one of the first import licenses granted to a foreign company in 1999, Torres helped open up the Chinese market to many other Spanish and French brands.
01:01Now he's treated like a celebrity in China.
01:04When I was going to China, they had, you know, posters. Meet the living legend. I wasn't feeling very comfortable, but what do you want, no?
01:14Looking to the future of the family business, one of Torres' great passions is sustainability.
01:20He was named by Time magazine as one of the world's top 100 most influential people leading climate change action.
01:29I wish we could stop oil, you know? Imagine, 100 millions per day, barrels per day. There is no planet that can stand with it.
01:40Familia Torres is taking action itself.
01:44We bought land already close to the Pyrenees in a cooler climate. Second, we decided also to mitigate our emissions.
01:52That's why you see so many photovoltaic panels. We produce in this winery 50% of the electricity is produced by us with our panels.
02:00And finally, you know, we created a group called International Wineries for Climate Action.
02:06That was five years ago, and today we are 150 wineries around the world.
02:11This sustainable movement gives him hope for the future.
02:16One where great wine and a stable climate can both age peacefully.
02:20Ken Bronsie, GTN, Barcelona.
