Newcastle 3 Aston Villa 0 - Matt Maher analysis
Transcript
00:00Good evening from Newcastle where the locals are very happy but Villa less so after a 3-0 defeat. Villa really don't like coming to Newcastle, it's now 17 games without a win including 11 defeats.
00:16This one 3-0 which means they've lost their last three trips here by an ignorant score of 12-1 and to be honest the scoreline flattered Villa, this could have been a lot worse with the big caveat that they played for an hour, more than an hour in the end with just 10 men.
00:34And the big talking point of the game, sending off John Duran after 32 minutes for an alleged stamp of what referee Anthony Taylor saw as a stamp on Newcastle defender Fabian Schaer.
00:46They were both running for the ball, Schaer got there first, went over, Duran effectively seemed to run over the top of him, couldn't stop himself.
00:54It seemed harsh, Eddie Howe the Newcastle manager later said it was maybe harsh, said he was surprised when the red card came out. Villa boss Una Emery said it was completely not a red card and Villa are obviously going to appeal as Duran, their top scorer in all competitions with 12 goals, is now facing a three match ban.
01:13Emery, most animated I've probably ever seen him in what two years, two months as Villa boss in a press conference, he felt that VAR and the referee should have worked together to take another look at the incident.
01:25Obviously Anthony Taylor made a very quick decision, he could have consulted, well VAR could have asked him to go for the screen, that is the protocol.
01:32Una Emery seemed to suggest that the referee should have asked himself or requested himself to go to the screen, either way he wasn't happy with the decision and obviously it felt it was a big factor in Villa's defeat.
01:44They were already trailing at that point, Anthony Gordon scored after just 80 seconds, fine goal but Villa caught on the counter attack as they have been so often.
01:56At that point they were getting back into the game when Duran was sent off, they were probably just starting to get a foothold the ten minutes before, after that, after going down to ten men it all kind of fell apart.
02:06They did what they could in the second half but they gave away some sloppy goals and they were lucky enough to give away a few more.
02:12So another bad day at the office, five straight Premier League defeats, good news is the next three games are at home.
